The default is ./savegame, relative to the server’s executable directory. Copy the replacement world files into that folder, then start the server and verify the result. World-selection fields exposed by hosting panels vary by provider and version, so do not assume that a panel’s “Save Name” option is a standard JSON key.

Where Enshrouded stores the world
An Enshrouded dedicated server reads its world from the directory configured by saveDirectory in enshrouded_server.json. On a newly generated configuration, the usual value is:

"saveDirectory": "./savegame"The path is relative to the server root—the directory containing the server executable and configuration—unless you replace it with an absolute path supported by your operating system. Community documentation generally places enshrouded_server.json in the executable folder after the server has been started at least once.
The first step is therefore to identify the actual server root and open the configuration generated by your installed build. Do not create a second configuration with a guessed filename. Key names and available options can change between releases.

The names above are commonly observed rather than a promise that every game version uses exactly the same files. Treat the files generated by your own server as authoritative.
Before you change anything
- Stop the dedicated server completely. Editing while it is running can be ignored or overwritten when the process saves its state.
- Record the current configuration. Download or copy
enshrouded_server.jsonbefore changing it. - Back up the entire save folder. Copy
savegame/, including any backup and metadata files, to a dated location on your computer or to a separate server directory. - Confirm access rights. The account that runs the server must be able to read and write the configured directory and its files.
- Check your installed version’s generated JSON. Use its spelling and structure instead of copying a key from an old guide.
A practical backup layout is savegame-before-switch-2026-10-14/ alongside the live folder. Keep the original until players have connected and the intended characters, buildings and map state are visible.

Switch an existing server to another world
This is the safest procedure when you already have a world export or a world copied from another Enshrouded server.

- Stop the server. Use the host panel’s Stop command or terminate the dedicated-server process. Wait until the process is gone and the console shows that shutdown has completed.
- Open the server root. Locate
enshrouded_server.json. ReadsaveDirectory; if it says./savegame, resolve that path beneath this root. - Back up the live files. Download the JSON and the complete save directory through SFTP, a file manager or your normal backup method. Do not rely only on the existing
.backupfile. - Inspect the replacement world. Preserve the files and names supplied with the world. Do not casually rename, edit or convert binary save data.
- Clear or move the old live contents. Move the current files to your dated backup rather than deleting them. Leaving two competing copies in the active folder can make it unclear which state the server is reading.
- Copy the replacement into the configured folder. With the default path, the files should end up directly under
savegame/, not in an extra nested directory such assavegame/MyWorld/savegame/. - Check ownership and permissions. The service account needs read and write access so that the server can update the world and create its normal backup.
- Start the server. Watch the startup log for file or JSON errors. Allow the server to finish loading before connecting.
- Verify in game. Join with a test character, check a recognizable build or location, and confirm that the expected progression is present.
- Keep the rollback copy. If the wrong world loads, stop the server, restore the previous folder, and start again. Do not overwrite your only known-good backup while troubleshooting.
What “copy the world” means
Copy the complete set of files that belongs to the save, not just a file that looks like the main world. A commonly described first world slot uses 3ad85aea and an associated 3ad85aea_info file; that naming convention comes from community guidance and should not be treated as an official invariant. If the source contains additional metadata or backup files, preserve them unless your host’s instructions explicitly say otherwise.
Create a fresh world without losing the old one
There is no need to destroy the current save to generate a new world. Stop the server, move the existing savegame/ contents into a dated backup directory, and start the server with an empty configured save directory. The server can then create a new world there. The old world remains available for a later switch.
- Stop the server and wait for a complete shutdown.
- Copy
enshrouded_server.jsonand the entire current save directory. - Rename the live folder, for example to
savegame-old-campaign, or move its contents outside the configured path. - Create an empty folder at the exact path in
saveDirectory, if your host does not create it automatically. - Start the server and wait for world generation to finish.
- Connect and confirm that a new spawn and progression state are present.
To return to the previous campaign, stop the server again, move the generated files aside, and restore the backed-up files to the configured directory.

Changing the folder instead of replacing files
You can keep several campaigns in separate directories and point the server at one of them by changing saveDirectory. For example:
"saveDirectory": "./saves/campaign-two"Create the directory, place the intended world files inside it, save the JSON, and start the server. Relative paths are easier to restore and migrate because they remain beneath the server root. If you use an absolute path, verify the operating system’s path syntax and permissions, and document it for anyone else administering the server.
Change only the value required for the switch. Keep commas, quotation marks and braces intact. A malformed JSON file may cause the server to ignore the edit or fall back to defaults; validate the file with a JSON validator before starting, and keep the original available for rollback.

Can you select a world by name?
Not universally. Some hosting control panels expose a Save Name field: when a save with that name exists, the panel attempts to load it; otherwise it generates a new world. That is a panel workflow, not proof of a standard key in enshrouded_server.json. The exact behavior depends on the provider and the version of its Enshrouded integration.

If it does not, use the reliable folder method: stop the server, move the current save aside, copy the desired files into the directory named by saveDirectory, and restart.
Do not invent or add a key such as gameSettingsName based on an old post. Community discussions have instead referred to gameSettingsPreset, which controls a difficulty preset—not which world file is loaded. Reported preset values include Default, Relaxed, Hard, Survival and Custom, but the valid values for your build should be taken from its generated configuration.
Validate the configuration after editing
- Open the edited file in a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting.
- Confirm that
saveDirectoryappears once and points to the intended folder. - Check that every property uses double quotes and that commas separate properties without a trailing comma before a closing brace.
- Run the file through a standard JSON validator.
- Compare the edited file with the backup if the server reports an unknown property or fails to start.
- Start the server and read the first errors in the console before attempting repeated restarts.
When a server starts but loads a new-looking world, stop it before making further changes. Confirm the resolved path, directory nesting and file permissions first; repeatedly starting the server can create or update files in the wrong folder and make recovery harder.
Troubleshooting a world that will not load
The old world still appears
- Re-read
saveDirectoryand resolve relative paths from the executable folder, not from your SFTP client’s current directory. - Check for an extra directory level. The world files must be directly inside the configured save directory unless your version’s generated structure says otherwise.
- Make sure the server was fully stopped before the replacement was copied.
- Confirm that the replacement files belong to the intended campaign and were not renamed by a download or extraction tool.
The server generates a new world
- Verify that the target folder contains the expected world files and that the service account can read them.
- Restore the original JSON temporarily to determine whether the edit, rather than the save, caused the problem.
- Check the startup log for a parse error, inaccessible path or incompatible save message.
- Do not delete the newly generated files until you have preserved them; they may help identify which directory the server actually used.
The server refuses to start after editing JSON
- Replace the edited file with the backed-up copy and start once to confirm that the server itself is healthy.
- Validate the edited file again, paying particular attention to quotes, commas and backslashes in Windows paths.
- Remove unrecognized keys copied from a different version. Re-add only settings shown in the configuration generated by your installation.
The world loads but progress is missing
- Stop the server and compare file sizes and modification dates in the source backup and active folder.
- Restore the complete save set, including associated metadata, rather than copying only the largest file.
- Check that you did not restore an automatic backup from an earlier point when the desired progress was not yet saved.
Related server settings worth checking
These options do not select the world, but they can affect whether players can find or join the server after a restart. Defaults and available keys are version-dependent, so confirm them in the generated JSON for your installation.

Reports about manually setting an ip value conflict: some administrators associate it with crashes, while others recommend a local IPv4 address. Leave it at the generated default unless your host’s current documentation and your network setup require a change, and test with a backup available.
