Find your refrigerator’s exact model number and match it to the correct replacement filter before you start. LG refrigerators do not all use the same cartridge or replacement procedure. For the filter identified in your model’s instructions, remove the old cartridge, install and lock the new one as directed, flush the specified amount of water, then reset the filter indicator using that model’s control.
Find the right filter for your LG refrigerator
Do not assume a cartridge fits because its name resembles another LG filter. Check the refrigerator’s model number and use LG’s Water & Air Filter Finder, or compare the label on the existing cartridge with the model’s manual. LG lists multiple filter models, and the refrigerator model—not its brand alone—determines compatibility.

Once you have the model number, open its owner’s manual and find the water-filter replacement instructions. LG’s illustrated replacement guidance demonstrates the LT1000P filter, but directs owners to their own manual for model-specific steps. Filter locations and locking mechanisms vary; a cartridge may be inside the refrigerator, lower down, or at the back.
Change the cartridge using your model’s instructions
- Check preparation requirements. Read the manual for the identified refrigerator and filter. Follow its instructions on whether to shut off the water supply or power, and whether to place a towel or cup below the filter. LG procedures differ by model, so do not assume either step is always required—or never required.
- Remove the old cartridge. Use the release or turn mechanism shown in the manual. In LG’s LT1000P example, the old cartridge is turned counterclockwise; other housings may use a different mechanism.
- Prepare and insert the replacement. Remove packaging and protective covers as instructed. Align the cartridge in the specified orientation, insert it into the housing or manifold, and secure it fully. Do not force a cartridge that will not seat or lock.
- Flush the system. Dispense the volume or run water for the duration specified in the manual. LG’s LT1000P example calls for flushing 2.5 gallons to remove trapped air and contaminants. A separate manual for the LFXS24623 specifies flushing for approximately five minutes and checking for leaks; those directions apply to that model’s instructions, not every LG refrigerator.
- Reset the filter indicator. Use the button and hold duration listed for your refrigerator. For the LFXS24623, LG’s manual says to hold the LIGHT / WATER FILTER button for at least three seconds. Other models may use a different label or sequence.
Check for leaks and confirm the reset
After installing the filter, inspect the area the manual identifies for leaks. If water leaks, the cartridge will not lock, or dispensing does not work as expected, stop and recheck that the cartridge is the correct model and installed as directed. Use the refrigerator’s manual or contact LG support if the problem continues. Some model-specific troubleshooting instructions include shutting off the water and power; follow the instructions for your refrigerator rather than applying that step universally.

After resetting, check the display or indicator to confirm it has cleared. If it remains on, consult the manual for the correct control and sequence; the indicator reset is separate from physically replacing the cartridge.

LG says to replace its refrigerator water filter about every six months or as indicated by the filter light. Treat that as a general interval, not a guarantee that every household’s filter will perform identically for six months. Pay attention to the refrigerator’s indicator and dispensing performance; LG’s regional support guidance also advises checking sooner if water dispenses slowly. If you cannot identify the cartridge or procedure
- If the filter finder does not identify a compatible cartridge, verify the full refrigerator model number and check the existing filter label.
- If the cartridge looks different from the manual illustration or will not lock, do not force it; confirm the replacement part and procedure for the exact model.
- If you need a model-specific procedure, use the refrigerator’s manual or contact LG support. LG’s LFXS24623 manual is an example of model-specific instructions, not a universal LG guide.
