Keep the existing YouTube live event active and switch the input in the encoder that is already sending to it. Leave that event’s server URL and stream key in the encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview for the new picture and sound. The exact source-switching controls depend on your encoder.
Change the source in the encoder, not the YouTube event
A YouTube live event is the event viewers open; your encoder sends its video and audio feed to YouTube using the event’s server URL and stream key. To keep using the current event link, keep that event active and change what the connected encoder sends. YouTube describes the URL-and-key setup in its encoder setup instructions.
- Open the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and verify it is the event you intend to keep using.
- In the connected encoder, leave the event’s existing server URL and stream key configured. The URL specifies where the encoder sends its feed; the key lets YouTube accept it. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Use the encoder’s source or scene controls to select the replacement input: for example, another software scene, camera, capture input, or other source supported by your setup. Menu names and switching procedures vary by encoder; YouTube does not prescribe one universal control.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the intended image, framing, and audio are present before relying on the change.
- Monitor the outgoing audio, video, and stream health after switching. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and checking the preview and stream health; see its encoder settings guide and live streaming tips.
Keep the event link distinct from the encoder feed
The viewer-facing watch page belongs to the YouTube event. The encoder feed is the video and audio sent to that event using its server URL and key. Changing the encoder’s input while continuing to send to the same active event is the practical workflow for continuing to use its current link. Ending the event and creating another one is a different workflow; do not end it or create a replacement if your goal is to keep using the existing event.
YouTube’s Reuse settings option is not an input-switch command for an event already in progress. It creates a new stream by copying the earlier stream’s metadata, settings, and key, with an opportunity to edit the settings. The cited help page does not promise that the new stream has the same viewer URL, so treat reuse as a new-event workflow. Read Manage live stream settings for what gets copied.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a scheduled stream, YouTube documents connecting the encoder and going live in Live Control Room as the start workflow. Check that you have selected the intended scheduled event before connecting or switching sources; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Check the result before and after the switch
- Before switching: Confirm the correct event is open in Live Control Room and the encoder is connected to its configured server URL and key.
- In the preview: Verify the replacement source, image framing, and audio. A picture alone does not confirm that sound is working.
- After switching: Keep an eye on stream health and the outgoing audio and video rather than assuming the source change succeeded.
- For a planned production: Test the encoder and source change ahead of the event. YouTube’s live streaming overview and computer live streaming tips cover preparation and monitoring.
Troubleshoot a failed source change
The preview is black or frozen
Check in the encoder that the intended source or scene is actually selected and that the input is providing a signal. This part is encoder-specific; YouTube’s general help does not give universal scene-switching controls. If the encoder has its own source preview or input-status indicator, use it to distinguish a missing input from a YouTube connection issue.

The encoder cannot connect to YouTube
Check that the encoder is using the intended event’s server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends copying the stream key from Live Control Room into the third-party encoder when troubleshooting encoder start errors. Follow YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance.
The stream key was reset
Update the encoder with the current key shown in Live Control Room. YouTube says channel owners or managers can reset a stream key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. See Manage live stream settings.

The picture changed but viewers do not hear the new source
Check the selected source’s audio routing and confirm sound in the Live Control Room preview. Keep monitoring audio and video after the switch; a source change can affect audio as well as the image.
