To show a running count of channel memberships on a 24/7 YouTube stream, use a third-party overlay such as Streamlabs’ Sub Goal widget. YouTube’s documented native live goals cover Super Chats and, for eligible vertical live streams, gifts—not membership counts. A separate YouTube /join link can invite viewers to become members, but it is not a counter.
Choose the goal you want viewers to see
First decide what the target measures. A membership goal counts new channel memberships, gifted memberships, or both. A Super Chat goal tracks a different event, while a /join link simply takes viewers to the membership offer.

YouTube’s Goals documentation describes native Super Chat and eligible vertical-stream gift goals, but does not list a membership-count goal. Memberships and gifted memberships may be available on both horizontal and vertical live streams, subject to feature eligibility; that availability does not mean they can be counted by the native Goals tool. Check YouTube’s live-stream feature comparison for current format and eligibility details.
Set up a YouTube membership goal with Streamlabs
Streamlabs documents a Sub Goal widget that can count YouTube Members and Gifted Members. Its setup instructions were last updated October 2, 2025; labels and interface details may change.

- Configure the goal. In Streamlabs, open the Sub Goal widget settings. Set a title, target, starting amount, and end date. In the platform event settings, select YouTube Members, Gifted Members, or both, depending on what you want counted. See Streamlabs’ Sub Goal setup instructions.
- Customize and save. Adjust the widget’s appearance so its text and progress are readable against your stream, then save the changes.
- Add it to your broadcast. Add the widget in Streamlabs Desktop, or copy its widget URL and add it as a browser source in compatible streaming software such as OBS Studio. YouTube describes encoders as a way to stream overlays; its live-streaming guide explains the role of encoder software.
- Verify it in your actual 24/7 setup. Confirm the widget is visible in the live scene and that its count changes as expected. Check what happens after the encoder reconnects or the stream restarts, including whether the goal’s progress and display remain correct.
The cited Streamlabs instructions explain how to configure and add the widget, but do not promise that it will remain online indefinitely. Test it in the setup you plan to use; do not assume a widget or encoder will recover or preserve its state in every continuous-stream configuration.
Give viewers a direct way to join
You can also share your channel’s membership link. YouTube says to append /join to your channel URL, then place that link in the live-stream description or other channel surfaces. This is a call to action, not a progress display. YouTube’s membership promotion help covers sharing the link and gifted memberships.

Keep the goal and the membership offer clear
A counter is most useful when viewers can tell what counts toward it. Label the target plainly—for example, “New members” or “Members + gifted memberships”—and make the target and end date visible. Confirm that the membership levels and perks you promote are current in YouTube Studio; YouTube’s membership levels and perks help explains how creators manage them.
Do not treat a third-party overlay as proof of YouTube feature eligibility or as a guarantee that every event will be reflected instantly. Check the displayed count during your own broadcast and clarify the goal’s scope if you count gifted memberships alongside direct joins.

Alternative overlay tools
StreamElements documents live pop-up alerts for new YouTube members and browser-source overlays. Its cited “Memberships goal” example updates video descriptions; that is not evidence of a live membership progress bar. See StreamElements’ YouTube creator information for the distinction.
Troubleshoot a membership goal that is not working
- The widget counts the wrong activity: Reopen its platform event settings and verify that YouTube Members, Gifted Members, or the intended combination is selected.
- The goal is missing from the live picture: Check that the widget or browser source is in the active scene, enabled, and layered above the background. Confirm the source URL or Streamlabs widget connection is still valid.
- The number does not change as expected: Verify the selected event type and test in the actual setup. The available widget instructions do not establish a guaranteed update delay or continuous availability.
- The widget changes or disappears after a restart: Check its behavior across encoder reconnects and stream restarts before relying on it for a continuous broadcast. The cited vendor material does not establish that every configuration retains its display or progress through restarts.
- Viewers cannot find the membership offer: Share the channel’s YouTube
/joinlink in the stream description. A goal overlay does not replace the join link.
