Change the tick rate by editing ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/Engine.ini. In the [/Script/OnlineSubsystemUtils.IpNetDriver] section, add or change NetServerMaxTickRate=30, save the file, and restart the dedicated server. The value 30 is Funcom’s documented baseline. A higher setting can increase CPU demand and make server frame rate (sfps) irregular when players, NPCs, buildings, or mods load the server.

What the tick rate controls
The tick rate is how often the server processes game information, measured in ticks per second. It is a server simulation setting, not a client graphics frame-rate option. Raising it asks the server to process simulation updates more frequently. That may be useful only when the machine has enough CPU capacity to sustain the additional work during the busiest moments.

The practical implication is to treat 30 as a stable reference point, not to assume that the largest number is automatically best.
Find the correct configuration file
Self-hosted dedicated server
On a Windows dedicated server, the relevant files are beneath ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer. Open Engine.ini, not just ServerSettings.ini. ServerSettings.ini contains many gameplay and rate-related options, but Funcom’s dedicated-server setup documentation places the tick-rate example in Engine.ini.

The complete path is:
ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/Engine.iniThe path is relative to the Conan Exiles server installation directory. If you administer several installations, identify the directory used by the service you actually start; editing a different copy will not change the running instance.
Server-hosting control panel
A hosting panel may expose the same file through an Engine.ini editor or a general configuration editor. The labels differ between providers and can change with panel versions. Use the editor that corresponds to the server’s WindowsServer configuration, rather than a generic gameplay-settings form that does not expose the Unreal networking section.
Change NetServerMaxTickRate step by step
- Schedule a short maintenance window. Changing a server configuration file should be done while the service is stopped so the running process cannot overwrite your edit.
- Stop the server. In a hosting panel, use its Stop or Shut down control. For a self-hosted installation, stop the dedicated-server service using the method you normally use to administer it.
- Back up the current file. Keep a copy of
Engine.inibefore changing it. This gives you a known-good rollback if the server does not start as expected or if a later update regenerates the file. - Open
Engine.ini. Use a plain-text editor or the panel’s configuration editor. - Locate the networking section. Find this section header:
[/Script/OnlineSubsystemUtils.IpNetDriver]- Set the key. Add the key under that section if it is absent, or change the existing line to:
NetServerMaxTickRate=30- Save the file. Preserve the section header and the key name exactly. If you are testing another value, change only the number so you can attribute any performance change to the tick-rate experiment.
- Start the server again. Use the panel’s Start control or your normal service-start procedure.
- Confirm the edit. After startup, check that the saved file still contains the intended line and monitor the server while it is carrying its normal player, NPC, building, and mod load.
Funcom’s official example uses 30. If you are not deliberately evaluating another value, leave the setting at 30 rather than changing it merely because a higher number sounds faster.
Should you use 30, 60, or another value?
There is no universal safe maximum in the cited Conan Exiles documentation. Hardware, concurrent players, active NPCs, building density, and installed mods all affect the CPU work required to maintain a given rate. A number that appears acceptable on an empty test server can produce irregular sfps when the real population is online.

Entering 60 is technically the same type of edit—replace the number after NetServerMaxTickRate=—but the available Funcom guidance does not establish 60 as a recommended target or promise a particular improvement. Evaluate it as an experiment, not as a default.

Why a higher number can hurt performance
Every increase asks the server to process simulation work more often. When the machine is already busy, the extra scheduling and simulation work competes with the work needed for players, AI, building systems, and mods. The result can be less regular server frame timing rather than smoother gameplay. A nominally higher tick rate is therefore not evidence that the server is delivering more consistent updates.

Testing can be reasonable when you have a reproducible workload and a way to observe CPU use and sfps. Make one change at a time, test during a representative busy period, and retain the original 30 setting so that you can reverse the change immediately. Do not describe the result as a general Conan Exiles performance rule; it applies only to the hardware, population, world activity, and mods you measured.
Measure the result instead of guessing
The important comparison is not the configured number alone. Record what happens on the running server at the same points in its activity cycle.

- Server frame-rate stability: watch sfps for sustained irregularity rather than relying on a brief quiet period.
- CPU headroom: check whether the host still has capacity at peak concurrent players, not only when nobody is online.
- NPC and AI activity: include periods when the world has many active creatures or other simulated entities.
- Building density: test near the most heavily built areas, where the simulation workload may differ from an undeveloped region.
- Mod load: include the complete production mod set. A test without mods does not represent the workload players will experience.
- Observed responsiveness: note whether gameplay feels more consistent, unchanged, or less reliable after the change.
Use the same observation method before and after the edit. A higher configured rate that leaves sfps irregular or consumes the machine’s CPU reserve is not a successful optimization, even if the number itself is larger. The available documentation does not provide a percentage improvement or a benchmark that can be applied to every server.
Editing through a hosting panel
Panels generally wrap the same file operation in a web interface. The safe sequence is:
- Stop the Conan Exiles service from the panel.
- Open the Engine.ini or configuration editor for the server.
- Find
[/Script/OnlineSubsystemUtils.IpNetDriver]. - Add or edit
NetServerMaxTickRate=30, or enter the experimental value you have chosen. - Save the configuration.
- Start the service again.
Stopping first matters because a running service or panel synchronization process may rewrite configuration files. If the panel offers backups or a configuration history, create a restore point before testing. Panel labels and the availability of individual settings are provider- and version-dependent, so the absence of a tick-rate field does not mean the key is unsupported; it may mean the panel expects a direct Engine.ini edit.

The wrong file was edited
Verify that you changed the Engine.ini under the running installation’s ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer directory. Editing ServerSettings.ini will not set the documented tick-rate key, and editing a second server installation will have no effect on the instance players join.

The server was not fully restarted
Save the file, stop the service if it was still running, and start it again. A browser refresh of a panel or a reconnect to the game is not a dedicated-server restart. Check the file after startup to make sure the line remains present.
The section or key is missing
Place the key beneath the exact [/Script/OnlineSubsystemUtils.IpNetDriver] header. If the key already exists, change that line rather than creating competing entries in unrelated sections. Keep a single intended value so that your configuration is easy to audit after updates.
A panel restored an older configuration
Some hosting workflows can regenerate configuration files when a service is updated or reinstalled. Stop the service, apply the change in the panel’s editor, save it, restart, and then inspect the resulting Engine.ini. If the value has reverted, repeat the edit using the panel’s supported configuration mechanism and keep a backup of the working file.
A game update changed the configuration
Major updates can alter networking behavior or regenerate files. Recheck the section and key after an update, then repeat your performance test instead of assuming that an older result still applies.
Can an administrator change it in game?
An authenticated administrator can change many Conan Exiles server settings from in-game administration tools. However, Funcom’s dedicated-server setup documentation specifically shows the tick-rate key in Engine.ini. Treat an in-game control as version- and provider-dependent unless your server build exposes and persists that exact setting. For a reliable, auditable change, use the documented file path and confirm the saved configuration after restarting.

Funcom’s September 15, 2026 Enhanced 2.2.0 update moved Conan Exiles to Unreal Engine 5.8.2 and replaced the previous UE4 networking model with Iris. That change is important for server operators because networking internals can affect how older configuration advice behaves. The update does not establish a new universal tick-rate recommendation in the supplied documentation.
After installing Enhanced 2.2.0 or any later major update, inspect the generated configuration, confirm that the [/Script/OnlineSubsystemUtils.IpNetDriver] section and NetServerMaxTickRate line are still present, and test under the live workload. Do not carry forward a 60-tick experiment—or even assume that the old 30-tick behavior is unchanged—without checking sfps and CPU again.
A practical operating policy
- Start at the documented 30 ticks per second.
- Keep a backup of Engine.ini before every configuration experiment or major update.
- Stop the service before editing and restart it after saving.
- Change one variable at a time and record the player, NPC, building, and mod conditions during the test.
- Judge success by stable sfps, adequate CPU headroom, and consistent gameplay responsiveness.
- Roll back to
NetServerMaxTickRate=30if the higher value produces irregular sfps, CPU saturation, or less reliable play. - Repeat validation after major game updates, especially the Enhanced 2.2.0 networking transition to UE5.8.2 and Iris.
The setting is simple to edit, but the correct value is workload-specific. Thirty is the documented starting point; any higher number earns its place only through measured stability on your own server.
