On a computer, choose Slide > Change theme to switch the presentation’s overall design. To change a slide’s background, choose Slide > Change background, select a color or image, then choose Done for that slide or Add to theme to apply it throughout the presentation.
Theme or background: which should you change?
A theme controls a coordinated set of design choices, while a background is just one part of a slide’s appearance. Google Workspace Learning Center defines a theme as “a preset group of colors, fonts, background, and layouts.” Choose a theme for a broader redesign; change a background when you want to alter the color or image behind slide content.

- Background: changes the color or image behind content. You can apply it to one slide or the presentation.
- Theme colors: adjusts individual colors used by the selected theme without replacing the whole design.
Change the presentation theme on a computer
- Open your presentation in Google Slides.
- Select Slide > Change theme.
- Choose a theme in the panel.
The selected theme changes the presentation’s coordinated design rather than only the background.

Change a slide’s background color
- Select the slide you want to edit.
- Select Slide > Change background.
- Open the color control and choose a color. For a custom color, enter a hex code or adjust the color, hue, and transparency.
- Select Done to change only the selected slide, or Add to theme to apply the background color throughout the presentation.
Use an image as a background
- Select a slide and choose Slide > Change background.
- Next to Image, choose Choose, then select an image from Google Drive or your computer.
- Select Done to use the image on that slide, or Add to theme to apply it across the presentation.
Google’s desktop help lists .gif, .jpg, and .png as supported image formats and specifies files under 50 MB.

Customize theme colors or import a different theme
Adjust colors in the current theme
- Select Slide > Edit theme.
- In the theme editor, select Colors.
- Choose a theme color, then select a preset or set a custom value.
Import a theme for a larger redesign
- Select Slide > Change theme.
- Choose Import theme.
- Import from a Google Slides or PowerPoint presentation, or use an image as a theme source.
What you can do in the mobile apps
Mobile controls differ by platform, so the desktop menu paths above do not apply everywhere.
- Android: Google documents changing the theme in the app, but its help directs users to open the presentation on a computer to change a background.
- iPhone and iPad: Google’s app help includes changing a background image and applying it to the theme. After choosing the image, tap Apply to theme to use it throughout the presentation.
For a background-color change or a control you cannot find in the app, use Google Slides on a computer.
