Change the URL where your web server or reverse proxy maps phpMyAdmin; do not start by editing phpMyAdmin itself. Update the active Apache Alias, Nginx location, proxy rewrite, or container routing, reload the front end, and test a table edit. Set $cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] only when phpMyAdmin cannot discover the public URL, such as behind port forwarding or a path-rewriting proxy.

What changing the phpMyAdmin URL actually changes
A browser URL such as https://example.com/db-console/ is an external path. phpMyAdmin is usually installed in a directory or container path that may have a different name. The web server or proxy connects those two paths. Renaming a directory alone does not change the route users request, and changing a phpMyAdmin configuration value alone does not publish a new route.

Keep a trailing slash in the public URL and make sure the server normalizes a request without it. Paths are commonly case sensitive, so /DB-Console/ and /db-console/ should not be treated as interchangeable.
A changed path is an organizational and exposure-control measure, not a complete security boundary. Anyone who can discover the route can still reach it unless TLS, authentication, network restrictions, and monitoring are also in place.

Identify where the path is controlled
Before editing anything, determine how this phpMyAdmin instance is published. Package layouts and configuration-file locations differ by operating system and distribution, so use the active virtual host, server block, proxy configuration, or container definition rather than assuming a universal path.

Plan the new route before editing
Choose a path that will not collide
Select a short prefix that is not already used by another application or API. Include the leading slash in a server rule and use a trailing slash for the browser-facing URL, for example /db-console/. Decide whether the old route should disappear or deliberately redirect. Leaving two active routes creates two attack surfaces and makes troubleshooting harder.
Record the current working state
Write down the current public URL, the phpMyAdmin document root or container name, the PHP-FPM socket or upstream address, and the configuration file that is actually loaded. Save a copy of the relevant virtual-host, server-block, proxy, or compose configuration. If you cannot identify the active rule, changing an unrelated file will have no effect.
Check TLS and access controls first
The public route should use HTTPS, preferably with HSTS. Decide whether access is limited by source network, VPN, firewall, an HTTP authentication proxy, or another upstream control. A path change should be performed as part of that exposure review, not as a substitute for it.
General procedure
- Identify the deployment. Confirm whether phpMyAdmin came from a distribution package, is served directly by Apache or Nginx, sits behind another proxy, or runs in Docker.
- Edit the active mapping. Change the Alias, virtual-host rule, Nginx location, proxy rewrite, or published route so the chosen external prefix reaches the existing phpMyAdmin document root or upstream service.
- Preserve prefix and slash behavior. Make requests to both
/db-consoleand/db-console/resolve predictably, and ensure generated links, forms, cookies, and redirects continue to include the prefix. - Use
PmaAbsoluteUrionly when autodetection fails. Inconfig.inc.php, set the complete public HTTPS URL, including the path and a final slash, when port forwarding or a complex proxy prevents phpMyAdmin from seeing that URL. - Validate the configuration and reload the front end. Use the syntax-check and service-reload commands appropriate to your operating system and deployment. Do not assume that every package uses the same file name or service name.
- Test navigation and a write. Open the new URL, sign in, browse a table, edit a row, and save it. A successful read is not enough: the write test exposes incorrect redirects, cookie paths, and URL detection.
- Retire the old route. Remove or disable the old mapping after the new one works, unless you intentionally need a redirect during a controlled migration.
Apache: change an Alias or virtual-host mapping
Find the rule that is serving phpMyAdmin
Distribution packages commonly expose phpMyAdmin with an Apache Alias, while source or manually installed copies may be inside a virtual host’s document tree. Inspect the enabled virtual host and included configuration files, then locate the rule whose URL path points to the phpMyAdmin directory. Do not edit a sample file that the running virtual host does not include.
Change the public prefix
Change only the URL side of the mapping when the installation directory is staying in place. A representative pattern is:

Alias /db-console/ /var/www/phpmyadmin/The filesystem path above is an example; use the directory that exists on your server. Keep any corresponding <Directory> permissions block pointed at that same directory. If the Alias is inside a virtual host, make the edit in that host rather than in a different site definition.
Normalize the slash and case
Ensure a request for /db-console is redirected or otherwise normalized to /db-console/, because relative links and asset URLs can resolve differently without the slash. Keep capitalization identical in the Alias, redirects, bookmarks, and access-control rules.
Validate and reload
Run the Apache configuration test supplied by your installation, correct every reported error, and reload Apache through the service manager used by your operating system. A reload applies the new mapping without requiring a full machine restart. If the old route still works afterward, another enabled virtual host or Alias is publishing it.
Nginx with PHP-FPM: coordinate location and FastCGI paths
Map the prefix to the real installation
Nginx must know both which requests belong to the new prefix and where PHP scripts are stored. Update the active server block, not an unused template. The public location, document root or alias, and FastCGI SCRIPT_FILENAME must all describe the same installation.

A conceptual arrangement looks like this:

}The exact directives depend on whether your installation uses root, alias, a named upstream, or a distribution include. The important test is that a request such as /db-console/index.php resolves to the actual index.php file, while the browser continues to see /db-console/.
Avoid prefix duplication
Common errors include mapping /db-console/ to a filesystem path that already contains another db-console directory, or passing the prefix twice in FastCGI parameters. These mistakes produce 404 responses, downloads of PHP source, or redirects such as /db-console/db-console/. Check one static asset and one PHP request separately before testing login.

Test the server block before reload
Use Nginx’s configuration-test command, fix syntax or include errors, and reload Nginx through the service manager. If PHP pages fail while static files work, inspect the PHP-FPM socket or upstream address and the calculated script filename. If login succeeds but links jump to the domain root, continue with the absolute-URL and proxy sections below.
Reverse proxies: keep the public prefix intact
With a reverse proxy, the browser may request /db-console/ while the upstream phpMyAdmin service receives either that same prefix or simply /. Either design can work, but the rewrite must be consistent. A proxy that strips the prefix for one request and preserves it for another causes broken redirects, missing stylesheets, incorrect cookie paths, or login loops.

Choose a rewrite model
- Prefix preserved: forward
/db-console/...upstream and configure the upstream server to serve phpMyAdmin under that prefix. - Prefix stripped: remove
/db-consolebefore forwarding so the upstream application receives root-relative paths; ensure response redirects and cookies are rewritten back to the public prefix.
Do not mix these models between HTML requests, PHP requests, static assets, and redirects. Check the proxy’s handling of Location headers and cookie paths, especially after authentication.
Set the absolute URL only when detection cannot work
phpMyAdmin normally derives its URL from the request. If TLS terminates at the proxy, a port is forwarded, or the proxy hides the external prefix, autodetection may produce an internal hostname, the wrong scheme, or a root-relative path. In config.inc.php, use:
$cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] = 'https://example.com/db-console/';This value is the complete externally visible URL, including scheme, host, port when applicable, full path, and a trailing slash. Set it to the URL users actually type, not to the private upstream address. An incorrect override is worse than autodetection because it forces every generated link and redirect to the wrong destination.
Check forwarded headers and redirects
The proxy should pass enough information for the application to distinguish HTTPS from HTTP and the public host from the upstream host. After signing in, click several navigation links and submit a form. Every request should retain the intended prefix, and no redirect should expose an internal hostname or port.

Docker deployments: separate port mapping from path mapping
Understand what Docker changes
Publishing a container port changes how the host reaches phpMyAdmin; it does not automatically create a subdirectory URL. A direct mapping may expose the service at a dedicated host port, while a reverse proxy can present it beneath /db-console/. The proxy still has to rewrite or preserve the path deliberately.
Change the host-facing route
If users connect through a dedicated port, update the host port mapping or proxy listener and keep the container’s internal service unchanged. If users connect through a subdirectory, configure the front-end proxy to send that prefix to the container’s application path. Verify whether the proxy strips the prefix before forwarding and whether response redirects add it back.
Persist configuration and test after recreation
Make route changes in the compose file, deployment manifest, or proxy configuration that is used to recreate the container. Editing a running container by hand will be lost on replacement. After redeploying, test the public URL, login, table browsing, and a saved row; also confirm that the old port or route is no longer exposed if it was meant to be retired.

PmaAbsoluteUri is an override, not the normal place to rename the route. Use it when phpMyAdmin cannot determine the externally visible address because of port forwarding or a complex reverse proxy. The official configuration description defines it as the complete URL, with the full path, to the phpMyAdmin installation directory.
- Include
https://when the public endpoint uses HTTPS. - Include the public hostname and nonstandard port if users need it.
- Include every path component, such as
/db-console/. - End the value with a slash.
- Do not use the container hostname, private IP, or upstream-only path.
If the public URL changes again, update this value at the same time as the proxy rule. If the application starts generating duplicate prefixes after you set it, remove the override and correct the proxy’s forwarded path instead.
Verification checklist
Use a private browser window or clear cached redirects so an old permanent redirect does not hide a configuration mistake. Then check the following in order:
- Request the new URL with and without its trailing slash and confirm predictable normalization.
- Confirm the connection is HTTPS and the certificate matches the public hostname.
- Sign in and verify that the login form posts to the same prefix.
- Open the home page, a database, and a table; inspect that styles and scripts load from the new path.
- Edit a noncritical row and save it, then verify the result in the table.
- Sign out and sign back in to test cookie scope and session persistence.
- Follow several links and watch for redirects to an internal host, HTTP, or the old route.
- Check server and proxy logs for 404, 301/302 loops, PHP-FPM errors, or denied requests.
- Confirm that the old route is disabled or redirects exactly as intended.
Troubleshooting common failures

Security measures to apply after the move
Do not rely on an unfamiliar path to protect an administrative application. Apply the hardening measures recommended in phpMyAdmin’s security guidance:
- Serve the interface over HTTPS and, where appropriate, enable HSTS.
- Disable production error display so sensitive paths and configuration details are not sent to browsers.
- Remove unused
testandsetupdirectories from the deployed application. - Choose an authentication mode appropriate for the server and database environment.
- Enable two-factor authentication where your installation supports it.
- Consider placing an HTTP authentication proxy in front of phpMyAdmin.
- Restrict the source networks that can reach the route whenever feasible.
- Keep phpMyAdmin updated when security announcements are published.
- Monitor authentication failures and investigate unexpected traffic to both the new and retired paths.
Review these controls after every proxy or container change. A route that is correct functionally can still be exposed more broadly than intended if an old listener, port, or firewall rule remains active.
Rolling back safely
If the new route fails, restore the saved mapping, reload the front end, and confirm that login and a table write work at the original URL. If you added PmaAbsoluteUri, revert that change as well when the old public URL is restored. Keep the failed configuration out of production until you can test the path rewrite, cookie behavior, and PHP routing in a controlled setting.
Once the new route passes the write test and access review, remove the old mapping or replace it with a deliberate redirect. Update internal runbooks, monitoring checks, firewall rules, and administrator bookmarks so they all use one canonical URL.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing the path require reinstalling phpMyAdmin?
No. In the usual setup, the installation directory remains where it is; you change the web server or proxy mapping that publishes it. Reinstallation is unnecessary unless the existing deployment itself is damaged.
Why does the new page load but saving a row fails?
A read-only page can work even when the prefix, session cookie, or redirect handling is wrong. Test an actual edit and save, then inspect cookie paths, HTTPS detection, proxy rewrites, and PHP-FPM routing.

Only if you have a deliberate migration reason. After administrators have moved to the new address, disabling the old mapping reduces duplicate exposure; if you keep a redirect, verify that it does not create a loop or reveal an internal host.
