To change the notification sound for all alerts on a Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet, go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound, preview a tone, and select it. To give one app its own sound, open that app’s notification settings and choose a sound for a notification category.
Change the sound for all notifications
- Open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Notification sound.
- Tap a sound to preview it, then select the tone you want.
This sets the general notification tone. It is separate from Ringtone, which controls incoming calls, and from System sound options for touch interactions and other device events. Samsung’s U.S. support guide describes the system-wide route and app-specific customization.

Set a different notification sound for one app
- If the option is missing, first open Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings and turn on Manage notification categories for each app. This prerequisite applies on newer software versions where the setting is available.
- Go to Settings > Apps and select the app.
- Tap Notifications, then select a notification category, such as General notifications where offered.
- Tap Sound and choose the tone for that category.
Some apps have multiple categories, so you may be able to set different tones for different kinds of alerts from the same app. Category names and available options depend on the app. Samsung’s New Zealand instructions show the category-based route; that page was last updated 20 April 2026.

Use your own audio file as a notification sound
- Open My Files and locate the audio file on your device.
- Copy or move it to Internal storage > Notifications.
- Return to the system-wide or app-category Sound menu and select the file if it appears in the sound list.

If the sound option is missing
- Check notification categories: On newer software, enable Manage notification categories for each app under Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings.
- Open a category: In an app’s notification settings, select a category rather than only switching the app’s notifications on or off.
- Allow for menu differences: Samsung notes that screens and menu labels can vary by model and software version. The paths above are common routes, not a guarantee that every Galaxy device uses identical labels. See Samsung’s device support guidance.
If your menus do not match, check the instructions for your exact Galaxy model and software version.

Separate app sound sends an app’s media playback to a Bluetooth speaker or headset. It does not change that app’s notification tone. Notification sounds are controlled through the system-wide notification setting or the app’s notification category. Samsung distinguishes these sound settings.
