Stop the Hytale server, edit the config.json file in the server’s root folder, change the name value while keeping it in quotation marks, save the file, and restart the server. Hytale’s official guidance identifies ServerName as the setting used for the name shown in the server list. Hosted panels may expose the same setting as a Server Name field.

What controls a Hytale server’s displayed name?
The server-list name is stored in the server installation’s root config.json. In the official configuration guidance, the relevant key is ServerName. The value is a JSON string, so the replacement text must remain inside straight quotation marks.

A name change normally takes effect only after the server has been stopped, the configuration saved, and the server started again. There is no verified in-game or console command for changing the name; the documented method is configuration editing.
On a hosted server, you might not edit the file directly. Many control panels provide a Server Name field under Game Settings, Config, or a similar section. That field writes the appropriate configuration for you. If your host does not provide it, use the panel’s file manager or SFTP access to edit the file yourself.

Before changing the name
- Know which installation you are editing. A machine can contain several Hytale server folders. The correct
config.jsonis the one belonging to the instance whose public name you want to change. - Stop the server cleanly. Do not edit an active configuration file while the process may still be writing to it. A hosting guide’s documented workflow is stop, edit, then start.
- Keep a backup. Copy the existing
config.jsonto a separate location before making a change. If the server later refuses to start, restoring the original file gives you a quick recovery path. - Confirm your access method. Self-hosted administrators usually have direct filesystem access. Hosted administrators may have only a web panel, a file manager, or SFTP credentials.
- Prepare a displayable name. Use a distinct name made from characters the server and client can display. Unsupported or unusual characters can result in a name that is missing or rendered incorrectly.
Change the name by editing config.json
Use this procedure when you manage the server files directly, whether that is on your own machine, a virtual machine, or a host that gives you file access.
- Stop the Hytale server. Use the normal stop control in your service manager, terminal workflow, or hosting panel. Wait until the process has fully exited before touching the file.
- Open the server’s root folder. This is the top-level directory of the Hytale server installation, not a world, log, backup, or client-data subdirectory.
- Make a backup of
config.json. Duplicate the file and give the copy a recognizable name, such asconfig.json.backup. Keep the backup outside any automated process that might overwrite it. - Open
config.jsonin a plain-text or code editor. Avoid a word processor. You need an editor that preserves JSON punctuation and ordinary text encoding. - Find the name setting. Official Hytale guidance uses the key
ServerName. Search the file for that exact key rather than changing an unrelated name appearing in a comment, log setting, world setting, or folder name. - Replace only the value. Keep the key and JSON punctuation intact, and put the new name between quotation marks. A simplified entry looks like this:

}Your file will contain additional settings. Do not replace the whole file with the short example above; edit the existing name entry in place.
- Save the file. Check that the editor saved it as
config.json, not asconfig.json.txtor another format. If the file contains a trailing comma or other existing formatting, preserve the surrounding structure while changing the value. - Start the server again. Use the same service or panel you normally use. The new name should be available in the server list after the restart completes.
- Verify the result from a separate client. Refresh the server list or reconnect so you are not looking at a cached listing. Confirm the spelling, capitalization, spacing, and punctuation.
Changing only the value safely
Suppose the existing line is:

"ServerName": "New Name"Do not remove the quotation marks, the colon, or a comma required by the next property. Do not add a second ServerName entry elsewhere in the object. Duplicate keys can produce confusing results because different parsers may handle them differently.
Change the name through a hosting panel
Panels differ in layout, but the workflow is usually shorter because the panel supplies a form instead of requiring a manual JSON edit.

- Stop the server from the panel. Wait for the status to show that it is offline or stopped.
- Open the game settings area. Look for Server Name under Game Settings. Other hosts place the same control under a Config tab or a Files section.
- Enter the new name in the field. Use a clear, displayable value. Leave unrelated settings unchanged.
- Save or apply the change. Some panels save immediately; others provide an explicit Save, Apply, or Update button.
- Start the server. If the panel offers a restart button rather than separate controls, use it only after the save operation has completed.
- Check the public listing. Refresh the list after startup and confirm that the panel’s value reached the running instance.
A panel form reduces the risk of accidentally breaking JSON syntax because it can validate the field before writing the file. It does not guarantee that every host uses the same underlying key, so the panel’s own label and documentation are the authority for that particular service.
ServerName versus Name: which key should you edit?
Most importantly, inspect the file you actually have. Official Hytale guidance identifies ServerName, while one hosting guide reports a key called Name. Those labels are not interchangeable assumptions: editing a key that your installation does not read will leave the old name in place.

Do not rename the file, change the casing of unrelated properties, or add both spellings simply to test them. Make one controlled change, restart, and observe the result.
JSON checks that prevent a failed restart
The name itself is harmless; malformed JSON is the usual risk of a manual edit. Before starting the server, inspect the edited line and its neighbors.

- Use straight double quotation marks around the key and value. Curly “smart quotes” from a rich-text editor are not JSON quotation marks.
- Keep the colon between the key and value.
- Preserve a comma after the entry when another property follows it. Do not add a comma after the final property if the file does not already require one.
- If the new name contains a double quote, either choose a different character or escape it according to JSON syntax. A simple name without embedded quotes is safer.
- Save as plain text and preserve the file’s existing encoding.
- Do not delete braces, brackets, or neighboring settings while selecting the old value.
If your editor has JSON validation, run it before starting the server. Validation can catch a missing quote or comma, but it cannot tell you whether you edited the correct server folder or the key used by your host.
What to do if the old name still appears
The server was not fully restarted
A save alone does not reload the name. Stop the process completely, wait for it to exit, and start it again. If your panel separates Save and Restart, make sure both actions finished rather than closing the page after saving.

You edited the wrong file
Compare the folder you edited with the command, service definition, or panel path used to launch the instance. Multiple installations, test servers, and backup copies can have similarly named configuration files.
The key does not match your installation
Reopen the active file and check whether it uses ServerName or Name. If the file has a different structure, use the host’s instructions instead of adding a speculative property.

A cached listing is being shown
Refresh the server list or reconnect from a client that was not already displaying the old entry. Verify the name after the server has completed startup.
The panel rewrote the file
Some hosted services generate configuration files from panel settings when the server starts. The available evidence does not establish universally whether a panel value overrides a manual file edit. If your manual change disappears, inspect the panel’s Server Name field, save the desired value there, restart, and check the generated file only as a diagnostic step.
What to do if the server will not start
- Stop trying additional edits. Repeated changes make it harder to identify the original error.
- Restore the backup of
config.jsonthat you made before editing. - Start the server with the restored file. If it starts, the problem is in the edit rather than the name concept itself.
- Compare the old and new files carefully. Look for a missing quotation mark, an accidental deletion, an extra comma, or a filename extension change.
- Reapply only the name-value replacement, then validate the JSON before starting again.
If the server still fails with the original file, the name change is not sufficient evidence of the cause; use the host’s normal startup diagnostics for that installation.
Choosing a name that displays reliably
Pick a name that distinguishes the instance at a glance and can be rendered by the server list. A short name is easier to scan, especially when several servers share a host or community. Include a meaningful environment or purpose when useful, such as a community name, test designation, or event label.
- Prefer ordinary letters, numbers, spaces, and simple punctuation.
- Avoid characters that your client, font, host panel, or operating environment may not display consistently.
- Check capitalization and spacing before publishing the new name; these details are part of the value users will see.
- Do not use a name that could cause players to confuse a test instance with a live server.
The configuration evidence establishes that unsupported display characters can prevent a name from showing properly, but it does not define a complete universal character whitelist. When in doubt, choose a simpler name rather than relying on a symbol that may be handled differently across clients.

Can the name be changed with a command?
No in-game or console rename command is established by the available Hytale guidance and hosting documentation. Treat a command advertised elsewhere cautiously unless it is documented for your server version and host. The reliable documented paths are the configuration value or a hosting panel’s Server Name field.

A server-list name identifies the instance to players, but changing it does not establish that other server metadata, world names, saved messages, DNS records, or panel labels will change too. Those are separate systems unless your host explicitly connects them. Edit only the setting responsible for the displayed server name, then verify what players actually see after restart.
