For the stock maps, the relevant templates are dayzOffline.chernarusplus for Chernarus+, dayzOffline.enoch for Livonia, and dayzOffline.sakhal for Sakhal. Livonia requires the Livonia downloadable content (DLC), while Sakhal requires the Frostline DLC; players without the required DLC may be unable to join.

What actually controls the map
DayZ does not normally use a separate “map” switch in the server panel or a map-name field elsewhere in the configuration. The mission selected by the server is the value assigned to template inside class Missions in serverDZ.cfg. Bohemia’s mission naming convention is <MissionName>.<TerrainName>.
The template is a folder name, not a display label. The server looks for a matching mission directory in its mpmissions folder. Capitalization, punctuation and every character matter. A correctly spelled terrain name with the wrong mission prefix, or a valid mission name that does not exist as a folder, will not select the intended map.

The names above are mission templates, not interchangeable aliases. If the required DLC is not installed or enabled for a player, changing the server template alone does not make that player eligible to connect. Check the current game and DLC requirements before advertising a map switch, because availability and licensing can change with game updates.

Before you edit: protect the server and its data
Stop the server completely
Use the host’s stop or shutdown control and wait until the process is no longer running. Editing while the server is active can be overwritten when it shuts down, leaving the old template in place or producing a partial configuration. Do not rely on merely closing a control-panel page; confirm that the server status is stopped.
Make a backup
Download a copy of serverDZ.cfg and, if the existing world matters, back up the current save data before switching. Keep the backup outside the live server directory and label it with the original map and date. A backup lets you restore the previous template and investigate a failed start without guessing what changed.
Map persistence deserves caution. A search summary has suggested that saves may be stored below mpmissions/<template>/storage_1/, which would allow different templates to retain separate data, but that behavior is not confirmed by a primary source in the available documentation. Treat a map change as a potentially separate world: do not promise players that progress will carry over, and retain the old save until you have verified the result on your server version.

Changing to another stock map
- Stop the DayZ server. Wait for the host panel or service manager to report that it is offline.
- Back up the configuration and save. Copy
serverDZ.cfgand the relevant save directories to a safe location. - Open the server root. Locate
serverDZ.cfgin the directory used by the DayZ server process. Some hosts expose it through a file manager; a self-hosted installation usually places it beside the server executable and launch files. - Find the missions block. Search for
class Missions, then locate the line beginningtemplate =. - Replace only the template value. Use the exact value for the destination map. For Livonia, for example:
template = "dayzOffline.enoch"; - Save the file as plain text. Preserve the filename, extension, quotation marks and semicolon. Avoid saving a second copy such as
serverDZ.cfg.txt. - Start the server. Allow the startup process to complete before testing a connection.
- Verify the loaded map. Join with a client that owns the required DLC and check that the terrain and mission are the intended ones. If the old map appears, stop again and confirm that the edited file is the one the running service reads.
Example: switching from Chernarus+ to Sakhal
Change:

Some game hosts provide a map selector that writes the same template value for you. If a panel offers a Chernarus+, Livonia or Sakhal menu, use it only while the server is stopped unless the panel explicitly documents a safe live change. After applying the option, inspect the generated serverDZ.cfg when possible and confirm that the value matches the intended mission folder.
Control panels differ in what they support. Before choosing a host or plan for a multi-map setup, check these capabilities:
- Whether the panel has a map switch or requires manual editing of
serverDZ.cfg. - Whether the service supports custom mission folders rather than only the stock maps.
- Whether required server-side mods can be installed and kept synchronized.
- Whether you can download configuration and save backups.
- Whether the panel exposes restart logs or the actual command line used to launch the server.
A panel label is not authoritative if it writes an incorrect or obsolete template. The mission folder and the final configuration read by the server are the decisive checks.
Changing to a community or custom map
Custom maps usually require more than a new template string. The map’s files, any server-side mod, and the correct mission folder must all be present. Community instructions are not uniform, so use the map author’s installation directions for the specific game version and mod set.

Mission-folder method
Community reports commonly describe copying the stock dayzOffline.chernarusplus folder inside mpmissions, renaming the copy to the required mission name, and setting template to that exact new name. This is a community-reported approach rather than a universally verified procedure; it can fail if the custom map expects a different folder layout or additional files.
- Stop the server and back up the current configuration and save.
- Install the custom map’s required server files and mods exactly as documented by its author.
- Confirm the mission directory exists directly under
mpmissionsand note its exact name. - If the author instructs you to clone a stock mission, copy it and rename the folder exactly as specified. Do not rename files inside it unless the instructions require that.
- Set the configuration to the folder name, for example
template = "customMissionName";. - Start the server and verify that every required mod is loaded and that clients have matching versions.
Do not assume that a folder copied from Chernarus+ is a complete custom-map installation. A map can need its own mission files, server keys, packed data or startup parameters. A missing dependency may prevent startup or leave clients unable to connect.
If serverDZ.cfg is missing
Some server downloads do not include serverDZ.cfg. A forum discussion reports creating the file manually in that situation, but the exact required settings depend on the server build and launch setup. Before creating one, check whether the host stores configuration in another directory or generates it on first start.
If you must create it, use a known-good configuration for your DayZ version as a starting point, include a valid class Missions block, and preserve the syntax shown above. A file with only a template line may omit essential server settings. Test with a backup and consult the current Bohemia documentation for the complete configuration format.

Bohemia’s wiki also documents a -mission= launch parameter that defines the mission at startup. The template entry in serverDZ.cfg is the usual approach for routine map selection because it is visible in the server configuration. If both a launch parameter and a configuration value are present, determine which one your server build and launcher give precedence to rather than changing both at random.

For a managed host, the launch command may be hidden from you. Ask the provider which file and parameter its service actually uses. For a self-hosted server, inspect the startup script and keep a record of any -mission= argument so that a script does not silently override your configuration edit.
Troubleshooting a map switch
The old map still loads
- Stop the server again before checking files.
- Open the live server’s actual root directory and verify the edited
serverDZ.cfgis the one used by the service. - Search for another copy of
serverDZ.cfgin the installation and host file manager. - Check that the
templateline is insideclass Missions, has matching quotation marks and ends with a semicolon. - Inspect the launch command for a
-mission=value that may select a different mission.
Editing a downloaded copy or a backup folder is a common reason for seeing no change. The hosting guide warning is practical: a running server can write its current configuration back during shutdown, undoing an edit made while it was online.
The server will not start
- Restore the backed-up template to confirm whether the change caused the failure.
- Verify that the named mission folder exists directly under
mpmissionsand that the spelling is exact. - For a custom map, confirm every required mod and server file is installed, enabled and compatible with the server version.
- Check that the configuration remains valid plain text and that braces, quotation marks and semicolons were not removed.
- Read the host’s startup output or server log for the first reported error rather than repeatedly restarting.
Players cannot join the new map
First check DLC ownership. Livonia requires the Livonia DLC and Sakhal requires Frostline. Next compare the client and server mod list and versions for a community map. A server can load successfully while a client lacking a required DLC or mod is rejected during connection.
The map loads but progress looks missing
Do not delete the old save while investigating. Because separate persistence by template has not been confirmed by a primary source here, preserve both the original and new directories, record the exact template names, and test with a controlled account. Restoring the old template and its backup is safer than moving or merging storage folders blindly.
Operational checklist
- Destination template copied exactly, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Matching mission folder present under
mpmissions. - Server stopped before configuration and file changes.
- Current
serverDZ.cfgand save data backed up. - Required DLC installed for the server and joining players.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change the map without reinstalling the server?
For stock maps, normally yes: change the mission template, ensure the required DLC is available, and restart. Custom maps may require additional files or mods.
Is dayzOffline.enoch the Livonia map?
Yes. It is the stock Livonia mission template used in the template setting.
Do players need DLC when the server runs Livonia or Sakhal?
