To change a V Rising server’s preset, stop the server, edit the GameSettingsPreset value in ServerHostSettings.json, save the file, and start the server again. For a bundled ruleset, enter its preset name, such as StandardPvP. To make the server use your own values from ServerGameSettings.json, set GameSettingsPreset to an empty string: "GameSettingsPreset": "".

Managed hosting panels expose the same setting through a “Game Setting Preset” (or similarly named) control. Choose Custom, None, or the panel’s equivalent when you need custom JSON settings. A selected preset can replace or ignore custom game-setting values when the server boots.

What GameSettingsPreset controls
GameSettingsPreset selects a prebuilt group of V Rising gameplay rules. The server reads the named preset and applies its values instead of relying on the corresponding values you may have entered in ServerGameSettings.json. This is separate from the difficulty preset, which controls another set of rules.
Stunlock Studios’ 1.0.x dedicated-server instructions document GameSettingsPreset with StandardPvP as an example. The same documentation identifies preset files under VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/GameSettingPresets. Your installation or host may contain a different collection of names, so treat the names visible in that folder or in your panel as authoritative.

The current instructions repository lists a 1.1.x PC page, but the retrieved 1.1.x material does not show the preset entries. The procedure below follows the documented 1.0.x key and the behavior consistently described by multiple server-management guides. Check the files shipped with your installed server if a 1.1.x update changes a label or path.
Before you change anything
Stop the server completely
Do not edit the active settings while the process is running. Stop the server from your panel or service manager and wait until its status is offline. A running process can rewrite the file during shutdown, undoing your edit or leaving a partially written JSON file.

Make a backup
Copy the settings files into a separate save-data folder before changing them. At minimum, preserve ServerHostSettings.json and ServerGameSettings.json; keeping a dated copy of the entire save directory is safer. Backups matter because server updates can regenerate settings files, and a known-good copy gives you a fast recovery path.
Know which control you are changing
- GameSettingsPreset: chooses the general game-rules preset.
- GameDifficultyPreset: chooses a difficulty ruleset and can affect values that overlap with the game preset.
- ServerGameSettings.json: contains individual custom game settings, but those edits may not take effect while a non-empty game preset is selected.
Change the preset in a self-hosted or dedicated-server installation
- Stop the V Rising server. Use the server console, service manager, or your host’s stop button. Confirm that the process has exited.
- Locate the generated settings files. Third-party server guides commonly place
ServerHostSettings.jsonandServerGameSettings.jsonin the server’s generated settings or save-data area. The exact directory depends on your operating system, installation method, and host. Use the location created by your server startup rather than creating a second copy elsewhere. - Open
ServerHostSettings.jsonas plain text. Use an editor that preserves UTF-8 text and JSON punctuation. Avoid a word processor. - Find the
GameSettingsPresetproperty. If it already exists, change only the value between the quotation marks. If it is absent, add a valid property inside the existing JSON object, adding a comma after the preceding property when required. - Enter the exact preset name. For example:

Names reported by different guides are not interchangeable: examples include StandardPvP, DuoPvP, StandardPvP_WeekendSiege, and other variants. A name that is valid on one server build may not exist on another.
- Save the file without changing its extension. It must remain
ServerHostSettings.json, notServerHostSettings.json.txt. Check that the JSON remains syntactically valid. - Start the server. Watch the startup log or console for configuration errors, then connect and test the rules in a safe location.
Return to fully custom game settings
To stop loading a bundled game preset, set the value to an empty string:

Guides consistently describe a non-empty preset as taking precedence over custom game-setting edits, so changing only ServerGameSettings.json while leaving a preset name in place will usually appear to do nothing.

If you also want custom difficulty-related values, set the difficulty key to an empty string as well:

}This combination is the reported method for using fully custom values. Keep the two properties distinct: clearing the game preset does not automatically clear the difficulty preset.
Change it through a managed hosting panel
Panel labels vary, but the setting is usually under the server’s startup, configuration, or gameplay-settings page.
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Open the configuration page containing Game Setting Preset, GameSettingsPreset, or a similar label.
- Choose the required preset from the dropdown, or choose Custom/None if you want the values in
ServerGameSettings.jsonto control the server. - Save or apply the configuration.
- Restart the server and inspect the startup log before inviting players back.
Some panels regenerate ServerHostSettings.json when you click Save. If you edit the file manually and the panel later shows a different value, the panel’s setting is the source that will be written at the next boot. Make the change in the panel itself when possible.

There is no single universal list that is safe for every V Rising release. Community references list names such as StandardPvE, StandardPvP_Hard, and SoloPvP, while other guides use StandardPvP, DuoPvP, or StandardPvP_WeekendSiege. These differences can reflect game version, server branch, or a custom file added by a host.
For a self-hosted server, inspect:
VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/GameSettingPresetsUse the filename or identifier expected by that installation, not an example copied from an unrelated version. For a managed server, the dropdown is normally generated from the presets the host has installed. If a name is not offered there, ask the host whether the preset exists for your server build rather than adding an arbitrary spelling.

Launch parameters and environment variables can override the JSON
The official 1.0.x instructions document three ways to provide the game preset:

If the file contains the value you expect but the server behaves differently, search the startup command and environment for -preset or VR_PRESET. A launch argument or environment variable can override the JSON value. Remove the conflicting override, or change it to the same preset, then restart.

These settings select different preset groups. The official 1.0.x instructions use the following difficulty examples:

VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/GameDifficultyPresetsExamples reported for difficulty names include Difficulty_Easy, Difficulty_Normal, and Difficulty_Brutal. Use the names present in your own installation.
A third-party issue and related pull request report that the difficulty preset may be applied after the game preset, allowing it to win when both define the same value. That behavior is not confirmed by an official statement, so treat it as a diagnostic possibility rather than a guaranteed precedence rule. When a shared setting refuses to change, temporarily clear both preset keys, restart, and test the individual custom value.

How to verify that the change worked
Check the configuration after restart
After the server starts, reopen the generated settings file or panel. Confirm that the intended value was retained and that the panel did not restore an earlier selection.
Check the startup output
Look for configuration-load errors, an unknown-preset message, or a notice that a launch argument was applied. An invalid JSON comma or quote can prevent settings from loading; an unknown preset name can cause the server to fall back or reject the configuration.
Test a setting that distinguishes the ruleset
Use a gameplay rule that is known to differ between the selected presets, and test it with a newly created character or controlled save. Do not assume that an unchanged setting proves the preset failed: two presets can legitimately share many values.
Test with no conflicting override
If the JSON value is correct but the result is not, inspect the startup command and environment variables, then clear or align -preset, VR_PRESET, -difficultyPreset, and VR_DIFFICULTY_PRESET as appropriate. Restart after every configuration change.
Common problems and fixes
“My ServerGameSettings.json edits are not saving”
A non-empty GameSettingsPreset is the first thing to check. Clear it, save the custom game-settings file, and restart. Also verify that you edited the active save’s file rather than a similarly named file in the installation directory.
“The panel changes back after reboot”
The panel may be regenerating the JSON from its dropdown, or a startup variable may be taking precedence. Set the value in the panel, choose its custom option when appropriate, save, and inspect the generated file after the next restart.
“The server will not start after I edited the file”
Restore the backup, then validate the JSON structure. Common mistakes are a missing comma between properties, smart quotation marks, an extra comma before the closing brace, or saving the file with a second extension. Once the server starts from the backup, reapply one change at a time.
“The preset name is rejected”
Check the local GameSettingPresets directory or panel list for the exact identifier. Remove spaces that are not part of the name and match capitalization. Do not assume that a name listed for an older release exists in your current server build.

“The game preset changed, but difficulty-related values did not”
Check GameDifficultyPreset and its command-line or environment-variable equivalents. A difficulty preset may be applied after the game preset for overlapping values. Clear both presets when you need every value to come from ServerGameSettings.json.
Recommended change procedure for a production server
- Announce a maintenance window to players.
- Stop the server and wait for a clean shutdown.
- Copy the active settings and save data to a dated backup folder.
- Record the current game and difficulty preset values, including any panel selections, launch arguments, and environment variables.
- Change only
GameSettingsPresetfirst. - Start the server and check logs and the generated file.
- Connect with an administrator account and test a rule that should differ.
- Only after that test succeeds, change custom values or clear
GameDifficultyPresetif required.
What to do after a V Rising update
Keep your backup outside the server’s generated directories and compare the new files with your saved copy after an update. Confirm that the GameSettingPresets and GameDifficultyPresets directories still exist and that your chosen identifiers are present. Because the current 1.1.x PC documentation snippet does not expose the preset entries, verify the key names and paths against the files shipped with that release before assuming the 1.0.x layout is unchanged.
Do not blindly replace every post-update settings file with an old copy. Preserve newly introduced properties, then reapply the specific preset or custom values you need. If the host supplies an updated configuration interface, use its current labels and check the resulting JSON after the first restart.
