To change the front page in WordPress, create the page you want to use, open Settings > Reading, select A static page, choose that page in the Homepage dropdown, optionally choose a separate Posts page, and click Save Changes.

The page must already exist before it can be selected. WordPress may use slightly different wording, such as “Front page displays,” depending on your version or theme.

How to change front page in WordPress
Use this process when you want a normal WordPress page—such as a welcome page, company overview, portfolio, or landing page—to appear at your site’s root address instead of a list of recent posts.
1. Create the page you want to use
- Sign in to the WordPress dashboard.
- Open Pages > Add New.
- Create the page that should become your homepage. Give it a clear title, add its content, and publish or save it according to your site’s normal workflow.
- If you also want a separate blog area, create another page titled something such as Blog. That page can be entirely blank; WordPress uses it as the location where posts are listed.
Do this before changing the reading setting. The page-selection controls can only offer pages that already exist.

2. Open Reading Settings
- In the dashboard, open Settings > Reading.
- Find the section headed Your homepage displays. Some WordPress versions or themes use wording such as Front page displays.
- Select A static page.
3. Select the homepage
- Open the Homepage dropdown.
- Choose the page you created for the front of the site.
- If you created a blog page, open the Posts page dropdown and choose that page.
- Click Save Changes.
After saving, visit the site’s front address in a new browser tab. It should now load the page selected as the homepage. Use the page editor to change the content; changing the homepage setting does not copy or move the page’s content.
What “A static page” changes
The setting separates two jobs that are often confused:

The homepage and Posts page are separate dropdowns because they serve different purposes. Selecting a homepage does not automatically create a blog destination, and selecting a Posts page does not turn that page into an ordinary content page.
Set static page as homepage WordPress
If your site currently opens on recent posts, the essential change is selecting A static page in Reading Settings. Choosing a page in the Homepage dropdown without changing that main switch will not produce the intended result.
Use a dedicated homepage
A dedicated page gives you a stable place for the content visitors should encounter first. Build that page in Pages, then assign it as the Homepage. When you later edit the page, those edits affect the front page because the setting points to that page rather than making a separate copy.

Use a separate blog page
Create a page for the blog listing and assign it in the Posts page dropdown. The page can be blank because WordPress supplies the post-listing role after assignment. Add your articles as posts rather than trying to place each article manually inside that page.
Keep the two selections distinct
Choose the page intended for introductory or evergreen content in Homepage. Choose the page intended to collect posts in Posts page. Giving both roles clear names reduces the chance of selecting the wrong page later, especially on a site with many pages.
Reading Settings versus the Customizer
The official WordPress guide identifies two places for configuring a static front page: Reading Settings and the Customizer. They address the same underlying homepage assignment, but the surrounding interface can differ by theme.

If the Customizer does not expose the setting you expect, use Settings > Reading. If the assignment saves there but the result still does not match the preview or the live site, consult the active theme’s documentation for its front-page controls.
WordPress homepage not showing my page
Work through the symptom that matches what you see. Dashboard labels can vary, so look for the equivalent control if the wording on your screen is not identical.

The page is not available in the Homepage dropdown
- Return to Pages and confirm that the intended page exists.
- If you have not created it yet, use Pages > Add New first, then return to Reading Settings.
- Make sure you are choosing the intended page by its title; sites with many similarly named pages can make the list easy to misread.
The key prerequisite is existence: WordPress cannot assign a page that has not been created.
The dropdown shows the page, but the old front page remains
- Reopen Settings > Reading.
- Confirm that A static page is selected.
- Check that the Homepage field contains the page you intended, not the previous page.
- Click Save Changes again.
- Open the site’s front address and check the result.
If the selected page is saved but the theme continues to display a different front-page arrangement, investigate the theme’s own homepage settings. Some themes include front-page features that affect how the default assignment behaves.
Posts are appearing on the homepage instead of the page you selected
Return to Reading Settings and check the main display choice. The static-page option must be selected for WordPress to use a designated page as the front page. The Posts page dropdown controls the separate location for blog posts; it does not replace the Homepage selection.
The blog page looks empty
A page assigned as the Posts page is a destination for the post listing. Its purpose is different from an ordinary page containing hand-written text, so it may be blank in the page editor while still being the correct place for posts to appear. Verify that you assigned it in the Posts page dropdown and saved the settings.

The screen uses different labels
WordPress versions and themes can vary in their wording. You may see Front page displays instead of Your homepage displays, or slightly different capitalization. Match the function rather than relying only on the exact phrase: find the control that asks whether the site should display a static page and then look for the Homepage and Posts page selectors.

The Customizer preview and the live page do not match
First verify the assignment in Settings > Reading. Then check whether the active theme has its own front-page settings or documentation. A theme can add presentation options that sit around the core WordPress page assignment, so the selected page and the final visual layout are related but not always controlled in one place.

To replace the current front page, create or identify the replacement page, return to Settings > Reading, keep the static-page option selected, choose the replacement in Homepage, and save. The previous homepage remains a normal page unless you separately edit, unpublish, or remove it.
To move the blog listing, leave the Homepage selection unchanged and choose a different existing page in Posts page. This changes where WordPress presents posts without changing which page visitors see first.
A practical verification checklist
- The intended homepage exists under Pages.
- A separate blog page has been created if you need a post listing.
- A static page is selected under the homepage display setting.
- The correct page is selected in Homepage.
- The intended blog destination is selected in Posts page, or that field is left for the arrangement your site requires.
- Save Changes has been clicked.
- The front address has been opened to verify the result.
- The active theme’s documentation has been checked if its own front-page features alter the expected behavior.
Common planning mistakes to avoid
Trying to select a page before creating it
The page list is not a page builder. It only lets you assign pages that already exist, so start in Pages > Add New.
Putting blog content inside the homepage field
The Homepage field is for the page shown at the front address. The Posts page field is for the location where posts are listed. Treat them as two different destinations.
Assuming every theme renders the page identically
The core assignment determines which page WordPress uses, while a theme may add front-page features or its own controls. When the selected page is correct but the presentation is unexpected, the theme documentation is the appropriate next reference.
Relying on labels from another tutorial
Interface wording changes across WordPress versions and themes. Follow the roles—static page, Homepage, Posts page—and use the equivalent labels visible in your dashboard.

When to use the Customizer instead
Use the Customizer when you are already working on theme presentation and want to locate the homepage assignment there. The official guide lists it as an alternative to Reading Settings. For a straightforward assignment, Reading Settings is usually easier to audit because the static-page switch and both page dropdowns are together.
If your theme’s Customizer contains additional front-page controls, record which page is selected in the core Reading Settings screen before changing those theme options. That gives you a clear baseline when diagnosing an unexpected result.
