Set the difficulty value in the server’s serverconfig.txt, but understand when that setting is read: it is used while the server creates a world, not when it loads an existing .wld file. Stop the server, set autocreate=1, choose a new worldname, set the appropriate difficulty number, save the file, and restart. The new difficulty will apply to the newly generated world.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Terraria servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
For desktop and dedicated-server configurations, the values are 0 Normal, 1 Expert, 2 Master, and 3 Journey. Community documentation reports a different numeric offset for mobile servers, so verify that mapping with your mobile server software before generating a world.

Difficulty values for a Terraria server
The server reads a numeric value from serverconfig.txt when it generates a world. On desktop server configurations, use this mapping:
difficulty value |
World difficulty | Availability and notes |
|---|---|---|
0 |
Normal (Classic) | Default setting |
1 |
Expert | Expert rules and progression |
2 |
Master | Introduced in desktop version 1.4.0.1, according to community wiki history |
3 |
Journey | Introduced in desktop version 1.4.0.1; Journey permissions can control who changes difficulty in-game |
These numbers select the mode at world creation. They do not act as a live difficulty switch for a world that already exists.

Before you edit the configuration
Stop the server cleanly
Stop the Terraria server process before changing its configuration. Editing a file while the process is running can be overwritten when the server shuts down, and a running process will not normally reread the file until its next launch. Wait for the process to finish saving and close before opening the configuration.
Back up the world and configuration
Make a copy of the current .wld file, its corresponding backup file if present, and serverconfig.txt. A difficulty change through this method requires a new world, so the backup preserves the old world and its progress. Keep the copy outside the server’s active world directory or use a clearly dated folder.

A server can have several configuration files. Edit the serverconfig.txt file passed to the server at startup, rather than an unused example file. If a hosting control panel exposes a configuration editor, confirm that it writes to the same file used by the server process.

- Stop the server. End the server process and wait for its save operation to complete.
- Open the active
serverconfig.txt. Use a plain-text editor. Do not save it as rich text or add a file extension such as.txt.txt. - Enable automatic world creation. Add or change
autocreate=1. The difficulty key is applied during this creation step. - Choose a new world name. Set
worldname=to a name that does not match an existing world. Changing the name is what forces the server to create a fresh.wldfile instead of loading the old one. - Set the difficulty number. For desktop configurations, enter
difficulty=0,difficulty=1,difficulty=2, ordifficulty=3as appropriate. - Save the file. Keep one setting per line and do not put comments or extra characters on the value line.
- Start the server again. Watch the startup output. It should report that a world is being created, rather than simply loading the previous world.
- Connect and verify. Check the world name and mode in-game before inviting players. If the server loaded the old world, stop it and check the file path, spelling, and world name.
Example: creating a Master world
autocreate=1
difficulty=2
worldname=MasterWorld
This example creates a new world named MasterWorld on a desktop-style server configuration. Replace the name with a genuinely unused name. If MasterWorld already exists, the server may load that world instead of creating one, and changing difficulty will not convert it.
Example: creating an Expert world
autocreate=1
difficulty=1
worldname=ExpertWorld
The same process applies to Normal and Journey; only the numeric value changes.

Community server guides consistently report that the difficulty value is consumed when a world is generated. Once the server has an existing .wld file, changing difficulty in the configuration does not rewrite that world’s mode. Restarting the process alone therefore does not turn an existing Normal world into Expert or Master.
To use a different mode without losing the original, create a new world with autocreate=1 and a new worldname. Leave the original world file untouched and change the startup selection only when you intentionally want to run the new world.

What about editing the world file?
One unattributed community search excerpt suggests opening a world in TEdit and changing its Game Mode setting. That approach is not established by the available documentation and can damage a world if the editor, version, or save operation is incompatible. Treat it as an unconfirmed, third-party method rather than a standard server procedure. Make multiple backups before attempting any direct world-file edit, and do not assume it has the same result as generating a world with the server’s own setting.
Journey mode server settings
Select Journey at world creation
For the desktop mapping, set difficulty=3 and use a new worldname. Journey is a world mode, not merely a player permission, so an existing non-Journey world will not become a Journey world because this line was added later.

journeypermission_setdifficulty=2
Use journeypermission_setdifficulty=1 when only the host should be able to change it, or journeypermission_setdifficulty=0 to lock the power for everyone. These permission values govern the in-game Journey power; they do not replace the world-generation difficulty=3 setting.
One community guide states that research and item duplication are part of Journey itself and are not controlled by these permission flags. In other words, locking the difficulty power does not automatically disable every Journey feature. Configure each permission separately when the server software exposes the corresponding keys.

Mobile server difficulty: verify the offset first
The Terraria community wiki reports that mobile servers add 1 to the desktop-style difficulty value. Under that rule, the mobile value for Expert would be 2 rather than 1. The available documentation is community-maintained and was not confirmed against a Re-Logic server specification, so do not apply the desktop table blindly to a mobile server.
| Mode | Desktop-style value | Reported mobile value | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | 0 |
1 |
Reported by the community wiki; verify with your mobile server build |
| Expert | 1 |
2 |
Reported by the community wiki; verify with your mobile server build |
| Master | 2 |
3 |
Reported mapping; verify before world creation |
| Journey | 3 |
4 by the same arithmetic rule |
The value-4 conclusion is an extrapolation, not a confirmed documented setting |
Because a wrong value can generate the wrong world, test on a disposable world first. Set a unique temporary worldname, start the server, inspect the result, and only then create the permanent mobile world. If the server rejects the value or produces an unexpected mode, consult the documentation for that exact mobile server version instead of assuming the offset applies universally.
Best Value
Diagnosing a server that keeps the old difficulty
The old world loaded
- Check whether
worldnameexactly matches an existing world. Use a new name to force generation. - Confirm
autocreate=1is present in the active configuration. - Verify that the server startup points to the file you edited.
- Stop the process fully before saving and restarting; a process that never stopped cannot apply the changed file.
The server creates a world but it has the wrong mode
- Check for a spelling error such as
diffficultyor a nonnumeric value. - Confirm that you used the desktop mapping only on a desktop-style server. Mobile builds may use the reported +1 offset.
- Look at the startup log to verify that the intended world was created during that launch.
- Do not infer the mode from a player’s Journey permissions. Permissions affect access to Journey powers; they do not identify the world-generation value.
The server refuses to create a world
- Make sure the configuration remains plain text and each key is on its own line.
- Use a simple world name without accidentally changing the key name or file format.
- Restore the backed-up configuration if the server stopped recognizing other settings, then reapply only the three relevant lines:
autocreate=1,difficulty=, andworldname=.
Version and compatibility considerations
Community wiki history places the Master and Journey values at desktop version 1.4.0.1. The available material does not identify a separate change to these numeric values in version 1.4.4. That does not guarantee that every server wrapper, mobile build, or modified server uses the same parser, so check the server version and its own configuration reference when behavior differs.
Keep the server and clients on compatible Terraria versions. A configuration value can be syntactically valid while the server build does not support the selected mode, particularly on older releases or non-desktop implementations. The startup log is the most useful place to determine whether the server accepted the value and generated the intended world.
A safe changeover plan for an active community
Preserve the original world
Never overwrite the only copy of an active world when testing a new difficulty. Copy the world and configuration first, then create the new mode under a distinct name. Players can continue using the original world while the new one is tested.
Announce the reset clearly
Changing mode through server configuration creates a new world rather than changing the existing map. Tell players the new world name, the selected mode, and whether characters, inventories, or builds will be carried over by whatever server process you use. The difficulty setting itself does not migrate existing world progress.
Quick Recap
Verify before opening access
- Start the new world privately or with an administrator present.
- Confirm the startup log shows world creation and the intended name.
- Join with a test character and check that the mode behaves as expected.
- Check Journey permissions separately if the new world is Journey.
- Only then publish the connection details to the wider player group.
Quick reference
| Goal | Configuration action | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| New Normal world | autocreate=1, difficulty=0, unused worldname |
Creates a new world; does not convert an existing one |
| New Expert world | autocreate=1, difficulty=1, unused worldname |
Use the mobile offset only if your mobile server documents it |
| New Master world | autocreate=1, difficulty=2, unused worldname |
Value documented for desktop-style configurations |
| New Journey world | autocreate=1, difficulty=3, unused worldname |
Set Journey permissions separately |
| Let everyone change Journey difficulty | journeypermission_setdifficulty=2 |
Works only as a Journey permission; it does not change world mode |
