To change the search engine Edge uses for searches typed in its address bar, first search once with the provider you want. Then open Settings and more (…) > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected services > Address bar and search, and choose that provider from the search-engine menu.
Change Edge’s address-bar search engine
- Search once with your preferred provider. In Microsoft Edge, type a search into the address bar using the engine you want to select later. Microsoft says this makes the provider available in Edge’s list. A search-capable site, including a wiki, can be added when it uses OpenSearch technology.
- Open Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner, then select Settings.
- Choose Privacy, search, and services.
- Open Search and connected services, then select Address bar and search.
- Use the menu for the search engine used in the address bar and select your preferred provider.
Menu wording or placement can vary slightly with your Edge version or interface language, but the setting remains under the privacy and search controls.

What this setting changes
This preference controls searches entered directly in Edge’s address bar. It does not make Edge the default web browser in Windows 10, and it does not change the Windows default-browser setting. You can keep another browser as Windows’ default while using a different provider for searches in Edge.

Search with it first
Return to a new Edge tab and perform a search from the address bar using the missing provider. Reopen Settings and more (…) > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Search and connected services > Address bar and search; the provider should then appear in the menu if Edge recognizes it.

Check OpenSearch support
Edge can add a search-capable site when that site uses the OpenSearch technology Microsoft supports. A normal webpage that does not expose a compatible search service may not appear as an option.
If Edge keeps changing the setting
Unexpected changes can be caused by an extension. Open Edge’s extensions management page, review extensions that modify search or browser settings, and disable or remove any extension you do not trust or no longer need. Then set the provider again through Address bar and search. Extensions can change the default search engine without the change being made manually.

Windows 10 S mode exception
On Windows 10 in S mode, Microsoft states that Edge remains the default browser and Bing remains the default search engine. You can still visit other search-engine websites, but the normal default-provider choice is restricted. Switching out of S mode is permanent, so it should not be treated as a routine troubleshooting step simply to change this preference.
Privacy consideration for address-bar searches
Microsoft says text entered in Edge’s address bar is sent to the default search provider to provide immediate search results and website suggestions. Review Edge’s Search suggestions and filters settings if you want to manage suggestion behavior. Choosing a different provider changes where those address-bar searches and suggestion requests are directed; it does not automatically disable suggestions.

Choosing between providers
Edge lets you choose the provider that best fits your needs rather than declaring one universally best. Consider the relevance of results for your typical queries, the provider’s privacy and suggestion behavior, and features you regularly use, such as maps, shopping, news, or specialized searches. You can revisit the same Address bar and search menu whenever your preference changes.
