How to Change the Default Screenshot Tool in Windows 10 and 11

Windows does not provide a single “default screenshot app” selector. To stop the Print Screen key from opening the built-in snipping interface, go to Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and turn off Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. That setting changes the documented behavior of the Print Screen key; it does not redirect every screenshot shortcut to an arbitrary third-party application.

What Windows means by a “default screenshot tool”

Windows has two separate systems that are often confused:

  • Default apps: the Settings page for assigning applications to file types and link types.
  • Screenshot shortcuts: keyboard commands whose behavior is defined by Windows and, in some cases, by the application that handles the shortcut.

The Default apps page therefore cannot be used to select one universal screenshot program. Microsoft documents a specific switch for the Print Screen key instead. The wording and location below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11, although a particular release can present the control slightly differently.

Turn off Print Screen opening screen snipping

  1. Open Start, then select Settings.
  2. Choose Accessibility.
  3. Open Keyboard.
  4. Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping.
  5. Set the switch to Off.
  6. Press Print Screen once to test the result. Test the exact key combination you normally use, because other screenshot shortcuts are controlled separately.

Microsoft’s documented instruction is: “Select Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, and set Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping to Off.” If you do not see the setting, confirm that you are in the Keyboard page under Accessibility rather than in Default apps, and check which Windows release is installed.

Use the shortcut that matches the capture you need

Changing the Print Screen switch is only one part of Windows screenshot behavior. These shortcuts have different purposes:

Shortcut Result Important qualification
Windows + Shift + S Opens the Snipping Tool overlay for an image capture. You can edit, save or share the resulting snip in Snipping Tool.
Windows + Shift + R Opens the Snipping Tool overlay for a video clip. This is a recording shortcut, not a still-image shortcut.
Windows + PrtScn Captures the full screen and saves it, normally under PicturesScreenshots. Microsoft notes that availability can depend on the computer’s hardware.
Fn + Windows + Space Alternative full-screen capture command on hardware without a dedicated PrtScn key. The key labeling and behavior vary by keyboard.
Alt + PrtScn Copies the active window capture to the clipboard. It targets the foreground window rather than the entire desktop.
PrtSc by itself Uses the behavior controlled by the Accessibility keyboard switch. Turning that switch off does not redefine all of the other rows in this table.

For a selected area, use Windows + Shift + S. For a video clip, use Windows + Shift + R. For an automatically saved full-screen image, use Windows + PrtScn when your hardware supports it.

What the Print Screen switch does—and does not do

The switch changes whether pressing Print Screen invokes Windows screen snipping. It is not a general-purpose “choose my screenshot app” setting. Microsoft’s shortcut documentation does not promise that it will make every shortcut open a third-party capture program, nor that it changes the behavior of Windows + Shift + S, Windows + Shift + R or hardware-specific combinations.

If your goal is to have another application respond to a particular hotkey, use that application’s current shortcut instructions and verify the result on your Windows build. Windows versions, keyboard firmware and manufacturer utilities can all affect which program receives a key press. Do not assume that disabling the built-in Print Screen behavior grants a universal override.

Troubleshooting when the change appears not to work

The setting is missing

  • Use the Settings search box for Print Screen and open the Accessibility keyboard result.
  • Make sure you are running Windows 10 or Windows 11. The documented path applies to those versions, but labels can move between releases.
  • On a managed work computer, an administrator policy or a keyboard utility may control the key. Windows’ public instructions do not establish a universal policy override, so check with the administrator or the utility’s documentation.

Print Screen still opens a capture overlay

  • Reopen Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and confirm the switch is visibly Off.
  • Check whether you are actually pressing Windows + Shift + S. That combination intentionally opens the Snipping Tool overlay and is independent of the single-key switch.
  • Try the key in another application. If a manufacturer keyboard utility, remapping tool or accessibility program intercepts it, its own configuration may take priority.

Windows + PrtScn does not save a file

Microsoft qualifies this shortcut as hardware-dependent. Confirm that your keyboard exposes a functioning PrtScn key, try the Fn-based alternative listed for keyboards without one, and then inspect Pictures > Screenshots. A single Print Screen press and Windows + PrtScn are different commands, so changing one does not guarantee the other will behave differently.

The capture is in the clipboard but no file appears

Alt + PrtScn is documented as copying the active-window image to the clipboard. Paste it into an image editor, document or chat and save it from there. This is expected clipboard behavior, not evidence that the Accessibility switch failed.

The interface looks different after an update

Settings labels and placement can vary across Windows releases. Search Settings for the exact phrase Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping, then verify the switch state before testing. If the phrase is absent, identify the Windows version and consult the current Microsoft Support instructions for that release rather than changing unrelated Default apps associations.

When a website screenshot API is the better tool

Windows shortcuts capture the desktop in front of you. They are not designed for repeatable, server-side captures of web pages, automated documentation or screenshots generated by a build pipeline. For that job, ScreenshotNeo is the first website screenshot API to try: it removes consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid entry plan described here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ScreenshotNeo is not a replacement for the Windows Print Screen key. It sends a URL to an API and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Use the following one-call examples when you need a webpage image rather than a picture of your Windows desktop. Full parameter documentation is at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/.

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

What you can control

The service offers 63 options, including full-page captures with lazy images loaded, a single element selected by CSS, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size and page ranges, HTML/CSS rendering, custom JavaScript, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, blocked ads, trackers, requests or resource types, custom headers, cookies, user agents and Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, image resizing, configurable cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can reduce migration changes.

Clean-shot billing and response headers

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed. Every response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers, so an automated job can distinguish a usable shot from a non-billable failure.

Or skip the browser setup

For webpage captures, the API avoids installing or driving a local browser: consent banners, popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed; and the MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. You get 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card, while paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

FAQ

Will changing the switch uninstall or disable Snipping Tool?

No. The documented control changes the action associated with the Print Screen key. Snipping Tool remains available through its app and its other documented shortcuts.

Can I assign a browser extension or website screenshot service as Windows’ universal screenshot app?

Not through the Windows Default apps page. That page handles file and link associations; shortcut ownership is separate and must be supported by the particular application, keyboard utility and Windows build.
