On Linux, raise an existing process with sudo renice -5 -p <PID>, or start it with nice -n -5. These settings only influence CPU scheduling; they do not add processor capacity or repair a server that is limited by single-core speed, memory, plugins, storage or network performance.

What CPU priority changes on a Rust server
CPU priority is an operating-system scheduling hint. When several processes want CPU time at the same moment, the scheduler gives a higher-priority process preference. It does not overclock the processor, increase Rust’s tick rate directly, or make additional cores available. The server still runs the same code and has the same hardware limits; it is simply more likely to be scheduled before lower-priority work during contention.

That distinction matters for Rust because the main game loop is strongly dependent on fast single-core performance. If one logical processor is already saturated, raising the process class cannot make that core execute instructions faster. Priority can help when antivirus scans, backups, database jobs, web panels, or other game servers are competing for time, but reported improvements from Rust owners are anecdotal rather than published benchmarks.
- Use it for: brief CPU contention, a busy host running several services, or testing whether background work is delaying the server.
- Do not treat it as: a replacement for a faster CPU, adequate memory, fast storage, a clean plugin stack, or correct server configuration.
- Watch for: starvation of Windows or Linux services, reduced responsiveness, and harder troubleshooting when a high-priority process monopolizes a core.
Windows: change RustDedicated.exe priority in Task Manager
One-off change for a running server
- Start the server normally and join or monitor it so you can compare behavior before and after the change.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. Select More details if the compact view is shown. - Open the Details tab, locate
RustDedicated.exe, right-click it, and choose Set priority. - Select Above normal first. Confirm the warning dialog. If contention remains and the machine stays responsive, repeat the path and choose High.
- Leave Realtime alone. It is intended for time-critical workloads and can let the server consume nearly all available processor time, starving input, networking, security software, or the desktop.
The change applies to that process instance. A server restart, crash, update, or control-panel restart normally returns it to the default priority, so Task Manager is useful for testing rather than permanent configuration.

Confirm the Windows priority class
Task Manager may show a confirmation prompt each time. You can check the result in PowerShell without changing it:
(Get-Process -Name RustDedicated).PriorityClass
The output should identify the selected class, such as AboveNormal or High. If multiple server instances are running, Get-Process returns more than one object; inspect the matching process ID before drawing a conclusion.
Windows: make the setting survive restarts with start /HIGH
The durable approach is to put the priority switch in the batch file, shortcut, or service wrapper that launches the server. Microsoft’s start command supports /LOW, /BELOWNORMAL, /NORMAL, /ABOVENORMAL, /HIGH, and /REALTIME. Use /HIGH only when you have confirmed that a less aggressive class does not solve the contention; /ABOVENORMAL is a safer starting point.
Basic persistent launch commands
start "" /ABOVENORMAL /WAIT RustDedicated.exe -batchmode +server.port 28015 +server.level "Procedural Map"
start "" /HIGH /WAIT RustDedicated.exe -batchmode +server.port 28015 +server.level "Procedural Map"
The empty quoted string after start is the window title. It prevents a quoted executable path from being mistaken for the title. /WAIT keeps the batch script attached until the server process exits, which is important when the same script contains a restart loop. Put your existing Rust arguments after the executable; changing the priority switch does not replace any of those arguments.

For an executable in a path containing spaces, quote the path while retaining the title argument:
start "Rust server" /ABOVENORMAL /WAIT "D:Rust ServerRustDedicated.exe" -batchmode +server.port 28015
Run start /? on the target Windows build to confirm the available switches and syntax. The command’s behavior can vary with the way a wrapper, control panel, or scheduled task launches the child process, so verify the resulting RustDedicated.exe instance rather than assuming the parent script’s class was inherited.

Adding CPU affinity with /AFFINITY
Priority decides which ready process is favored; affinity decides which logical processors it may run on. The /AFFINITY switch takes a hexadecimal mask. Bit 0 represents logical processor 0, bit 1 represents logical processor 1, and so on. For example, FE is binary 11111110: it permits logical processors 1 through 7 and excludes processor 0 on a system where those eight logical processors exist.
start "" /HIGH /AFFINITY FE /WAIT RustDedicated.exe -batchmode +server.port 28015
Do not copy an affinity mask blindly. The usable mask depends on the host’s logical-processor layout, processor groups, and what other services need. Pinning the server can make contention worse if you restrict it to an already-busy core. Test one change at a time and record the previous mask so you can remove /AFFINITY quickly.

Restart-loop example
If your existing batch file restarts the server after an unexpected exit, apply the switch to the launch line inside that loop, not only to a one-time shortcut:
:restart
start "" /ABOVENORMAL /WAIT RustDedicated.exe -batchmode +server.port 28015 +server.level "Procedural Map"
timeout /t 5
goto restart
Keep your current shutdown handling and logging. A loop that immediately relaunches a crashing process can obscure the real fault; priority should not be used to mask crashes or memory errors.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choosing Above normal, High, or Realtime on Windows
| Class | When it is reasonable | Main risk | Recommended use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal | Default scheduling for ordinary services | Another CPU-heavy task can compete equally | Baseline for comparison |
| Above normal | You need a modest preference during contention | Can still reduce time available to lower classes | First persistent setting to test |
| High | The server is measurably delayed by competing CPU work | May consume nearly all available processor time when busy | Use temporarily or with monitoring |
| Realtime | Specialized, genuinely time-critical workloads | Can starve the operating system and make recovery difficult; requires the appropriate privilege | Do not use for a normal Rust server |
Windows requires the SeIncreaseBasePriorityPrivilege privilege for Realtime. Without that privilege, the highest class a caller can set is High. A successful menu selection is not evidence that Realtime is safe; the scheduling consequences are the reason to avoid it.
Linux: raise priority with renice
Change an already-running process
Linux represents niceness numerically. A lower nice value gives a process more favorable CPU scheduling, while a higher value makes it more willing to yield. The usual range is negative values for higher priority through positive values for lower priority. Increasing priority requires root privileges.

- Find the Rust server process and note its PID. For example, inspect the command line with
pgrep -af RustDedicatedor use your process manager’s status command. - Apply a modest negative nice value:
sudo renice -5 -p <PID>
- Confirm the kernel’s value:
ps -o pid,ni,comm -p <PID>
Replace <PID> with the actual numeric process ID; do not include the angle brackets. The NI column should show -5 after a successful change. If the command reports “Operation not permitted,” run it through sudo and check that you selected the server process rather than an unprivileged wrapper.
Start the server with a chosen nice value
renice changes an existing process. To set the value as the process starts, prefix the launch command with nice and use root for a negative adjustment:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sudo nice -n -5 ./RustDedicated -batchmode +server.port 28015 +server.level "Procedural Map"
Keep the command’s normal working directory, environment variables, and Rust arguments. If a shell script launches the server, place nice -n -5 on the line that executes RustDedicated. If a supervisor or hosting panel starts it, edit that supervisor’s launch definition instead; changing an unrelated shell will not affect a process that it does not create.
Check the final value after startup with the PID shown by the launcher:
Best Value
ps -o pid,ni,stat,comm -p <PID>
A negative value confirms the requested niceness, but it does not prove that the server is CPU-bound or that players will see a benefit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to test whether priority helps
Make a controlled comparison rather than relying on a single busy moment. Record the server’s normal priority, then reproduce the same workload with the higher class. Keep the map, player population, plugins, view distance, restart state, and background jobs as consistent as practical.
- Watch one logical CPU as well as total CPU usage. A single saturated logical processor points to a clock-speed or main-thread limit that priority cannot remove.
- Record server frame or tick warnings, player-reported rubber-banding, and latency during the same event or player count.
- Monitor memory pressure, disk wait, network loss, and plugin errors. A CPU-priority change cannot correct those bottlenecks.
- Check host responsiveness. If remote access, monitoring, backups, or networking become unreliable, return to Normal or remove the negative nice value.
No published statistic establishes a predictable percentage improvement for Rust servers. Treat any gain as host-specific and keep the setting only when repeatable measurements justify its scheduling cost.
When changing priority will not fix the server
Single-core saturation
Rust’s main game loop can be limited by the speed of one core even when overall CPU utilization appears moderate. More total cores do not automatically solve that condition. A newer processor with higher sustained single-core clock performance is the relevant hardware remedy; priority only changes which process wins brief scheduling contests.
Plugin, configuration, or entity load
Large entity counts, expensive plugins, frequent save operations, and aggressive server settings can create work that must still be completed. Raising priority may hide the symptoms for a short period while leaving the workload unchanged. Profile or disable the suspected component and compare logs before escalating the process class.
Memory, storage, and network limits
Paging, slow storage, a full disk, packet loss, or an overloaded network path can all look like lag. A higher CPU class cannot make a disk seek faster or recover a dropped packet. Check those resources independently before pinning cores or using High.
Quick Recap
Rollback and recovery
Windows
- For a live process, open Task Manager’s Details tab, choose
RustDedicated.exe, select Set priority, and choose Normal. - For a persistent launch, remove
/HIGH,/ABOVENORMAL, and any experimental/AFFINITYswitch from the batch or service command, then restart the server. - If the machine becomes unresponsive after High, use a second administrative session or reboot into a controlled maintenance window; do not escalate to Realtime.
Linux
- Reset a running process to the usual nice value with
sudo renice 0 -p <PID>. - Remove
nice -n -5from the launch command and restart the process so future instances use the default. - If a supervisor repeatedly applies the old value, change its launch definition and verify the new PID with
ps.
Common mistakes
- Changing the wrong process: Rust launchers, update tools, and wrappers can have similar names. Select the process whose command line is the actual dedicated server.
- Expecting persistence from Task Manager: the menu change ends with that process instance.
- Forgetting the title argument to start: use
start "" /HIGH ...when the executable path or arguments are quoted. - Using a negative nice value without root: Linux permits users to lower their own priority, but raising it generally requires root.
- Combining affinity and priority immediately: change one variable, measure, and keep a rollback copy of the original launch command.
- Using High to conceal a failing host: an overloaded or unstable machine needs workload reduction or hardware capacity, not an increasingly aggressive scheduling class.
A safe decision sequence
- Establish a Normal-priority baseline and identify whether the problem is CPU contention rather than storage, memory, network, or plugin load.
- Test Above normal on Windows or nice
-5on Linux for one maintenance window while monitoring the host. - Keep the change only if the same workload repeatedly improves and the operating system remains responsive.
- If there is no repeatable improvement, undo the setting and address single-core performance, workload size, plugins, or competing services.
- Use High only for a demonstrated contention case, and avoid Realtime for a general-purpose Rust server.
