To change a computer’s storage mode, open BIOS/UEFI setup, find the SATA or storage configuration menu, select the supported AHCI or IDE mode, then save and exit. The exact key and menu labels vary by computer or motherboard. If Windows is already installed, changing the mode can stop it from booting, so check the system’s documentation and recovery steps before changing it.
Before changing AHCI or IDE
AHCI and IDE are storage-controller modes, not settings that replace or modify the hard drive itself. On the ASUS P8H61-I LX R2.0, the manual describes IDE mode as presenting Serial ATA disks as Parallel ATA devices, while AHCI enables SATA features such as command ordering for random workloads. Those descriptions apply to that board; they are not a promise of a particular speed increase on every computer. ASUS P8H61-I LX R2.0 manual

- Identify the exact computer or motherboard model. Use its manual to confirm the startup key, menu path, and available modes.
- Check how the operating system was installed. A Windows installation may depend on the controller mode and storage driver it used. Switching modes without preparing the installation can make Windows fail to start. Microsoft documents a Windows 8 reboot loop after changing ATA to AHCI, and ASRock notes startup problems when the mode differs from the one used to install the system. Microsoft’s Windows 8 troubleshooting guidance ASRock AHCI FAQ
- Do not treat IDE, AHCI, RAID, and Intel RST as interchangeable. Their availability and driver requirements depend on the platform and operating system. Intel says its RST driver is not compatible with AHCI mode; check the computer maker’s documentation before changing between these configurations. Intel RST compatibility guidance
How to change the BIOS setting
- Restart or power on the computer. Use the startup key specified in the computer or motherboard manual to enter BIOS/UEFI setup. For Intel Desktop Boards, Intel documents F2 or F10, but other systems may use different keys. Intel Desktop Board instructions
- Open the storage, SATA, or drive-configuration menu. The location varies: examples in manufacturer documentation include Advanced > Drive Configuration, SATA Drives, or Advanced > SATA Configuration. The ASUS P8H61-I LX R2.0 manual gives the path Advanced Mode > Advanced tab > SATA Configuration > OnChip SATA Type. These are examples, not universal paths.
- Select the supported mode appropriate for the operating system and installed storage drivers. If the setting is missing, do not assume another mode is equivalent; consult the system manual or manufacturer.
- Save the change and exit setup. The save command varies by system; Intel documents F10 for its Desktop Boards.
- Allow the computer to restart. If an existing Windows installation no longer starts, return to BIOS/UEFI and restore the previous mode before trying a recovery procedure for that Windows version and controller.
Choosing between AHCI and IDE
There is no universally correct mode for every computer. Decide based on whether the board and operating system support the mode, which mode the current OS installation expects, whether the needed driver is installed, and which controller features are required. The cited documentation does not establish a universal speed advantage for AHCI.
Older operating systems
Some legacy instructions are specific to old hardware and operating systems. ASUS says AHCI on its H61 board works with Windows Vista and Windows 7, and advises IDE for Windows XP. ASRock says Windows XP installation using AHCI requires the SATA driver first. These are board-specific historical notes, not general rules for every machine. ASUS manual ASRock AHCI FAQ

- 2.5" SATA Drives Only — SSD & HDD: Compatible with 2.5" SATA I/II/III SSDs and laptop HDDs. NOT compatible with: M.2 NVMe drives, M.2 SATA drives, 3.5" desktop HDDs, or slim SATA optical drives. Verify your drive has a standard 2.5" SATA connector before purchasing.
- USB Bus-Powered — No Adapter Needed for Most Drives: Powers most 2.5" SATA SSDs and laptop HDDs directly from USB. Note: Some older or high-capacity 2.5" mechanical HDDs may draw more current than a single USB port provides — if a drive fails to spin up, try a powered USB hub or a different USB 3.0 port.
- USB 3.0 (USB-A) — 5Gbps with UASP: Host connection is USB Type-A (USB-A). Computers with only USB-C ports require a separate USB-C to USB-A adapter (not included). UASP support for faster transfers on compatible systems.
- Plug & Play: No drivers required; hot-swappable design for quick access to drives on Windows, macOS, and Linux
- Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device
RAID or Intel RST configurations
If setup offers RAID or an Intel RST option, treat it as a separate configuration, not another name for IDE or AHCI. Changing it can affect the operating system’s ability to access its boot drive. Check the computer maker’s instructions and the installed driver configuration before making any change. Intel RST compatibility guidance

First return the BIOS setting to the mode that allowed Windows to boot. Microsoft’s recovery sequence below applies narrowly to its documented Windows 8 case: changing the BIOS setting from ATA to AHCI caused a reboot loop because boot-start drivers were not installed by default. Microsoft’s article was updated February 12, 2026. Do not treat these steps as a universal fix for other Windows versions, RAID/RST configurations, or OEM systems. Before using the sequence, confirm that you can boot Windows normally with the previous ATA setting and know the local administrator account and password. Then:
- Set the BIOS drive mode back to ATA and boot Windows normally.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt and run
bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal. - Restart, change the BIOS setting to AHCI, and boot into Safe Mode.
- In an elevated Command Prompt, run
bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot. - Restart Windows normally.
If these steps do not match the system’s Windows version or storage configuration, stop and use the computer maker’s or Microsoft’s instructions for that specific setup.
