To make text easier to read, use Windows’ text-size setting. If you also want apps and interface items to grow, change display scaling instead. For a temporary close-up, use Magnifier. These built-in options work without changing your display resolution.
Choose what you want to enlarge

Change text size in Windows 11
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Text size. Or press Windows key + U to open Accessibility settings.
- Move the Text size slider to the right. Use the sample text to check the result.
- Select Apply.
This setting enlarges Windows text, including title bars, menus, and icon labels, without requiring a resolution change. See Microsoft’s Make Windows easier to see guide.

Change text size in Windows 10
- Open Settings > Ease of Access > Display. Or press Windows key + U to open Ease of Access.
- Under Make text bigger, move the slider to the right.
- Apply the change.
Windows 10 uses a different settings path and label than Windows 11. Microsoft’s accessibility guide covers both versions.

- Open Settings > System > Display.
- If you have multiple displays, select the display you want to adjust.
- Under Scale & layout, choose a larger value from Scale. Microsoft recommends using the option marked Recommended.
Most scaling changes take effect immediately, but some apps may need you to sign out and back in. For details, see Microsoft’s Make text and apps bigger and screen resolution and layout guides.

Use Magnifier for temporary zoom
- Press Windows key + Plus (+) to start Magnifier and zoom in.
- Press Windows key + Minus (-) to zoom out.
- Press Windows key + Esc to close Magnifier.
Unlike the text-size setting, Magnifier is for a temporary close-up. Microsoft explains its controls in the Magnifier guide and its instructions for changing the zoom level.
Why not lower the screen resolution?
Resolution controls how the display renders the image; it is not a font-size setting. Microsoft recommends using the display’s marked resolution. Choosing a lower-than-native resolution can make text less sharp, and the image may appear small, centered, bordered, or stretched. Try Text size or Scale first when the problem is readability.

Windows 10 support note
Microsoft states that Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. It no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The PC will continue to work; Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. This support status does not change the text-size steps above.
