Change Team Fortress 2 server tags by editing the sv_tags setting in the server’s tf/cfg/server.cfg file. Put a quoted, comma-separated value such as sv_tags="EU,Europe,Hightower", save the file, restart the dedicated server, and run status in the server console to confirm the value.

What sv_tags controls
sv_tags is the Team Fortress 2 dedicated-server setting for gametags. Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes gametags as an optional string that lets players filter servers in matchmaking and server-browser interfaces. A tag does not change the map, rules, player limit, or gameplay by itself; it describes the server so a browser or filter can match it.
Use short descriptors that are true for the server. A regional tag can identify a location, a map name can identify a preferred map, and a rules or mode descriptor can explain what players should expect. Tags are not a substitute for a server name, MOTD, map rotation, or clear rule configuration.

Find the correct configuration file
Dedicated-server layout
The file to edit is tf/cfg/server.cfg inside the Team Fortress 2 server installation. The tf directory is the game directory containing configuration, maps, materials, and other Team Fortress 2 files. Do not edit a similarly named file from a client installation or another game instance.
Managed hosting panels
A managed host may provide a web-based file editor rather than shell access. Open the server’s file manager and navigate to tf/cfg/server.cfg. One documented container layout uses /home/container/tf/cfg/server.cfg, but that absolute path is not universal; the panel’s startup directory and image can place the same relative path elsewhere. If the file is missing, check that you are editing the live instance and not a template, backup, or staging directory.
Self-hosted servers
On a server you administer yourself, locate the directory from the command or service that starts srcds. The relative location remains tf/cfg/server.cfg. If several instances run on one machine, verify the instance’s -game and +map arguments and edit the configuration under that instance’s directory.
Change the tags step by step
- Stop or prepare the server for a configuration edit. A live edit is possible on some panels, but stopping the instance first avoids a restart racing with a file write. Tell players about the restart if the server is populated.
- Open
tf/cfg/server.cfg. Use the panel editor or a text editor over your administrative connection. Make a backup copy before replacing an existing line, especially if the file contains other server settings. - Add or replace the setting. Put one line in the file, for example:
sv_tags="EU,Europe,Hightower"
Keep the entire value on one line and keep the quotation marks around the list. - Save the file as plain text. Do not add a second
sv_tagsline later in the file unless you intentionally want the later command to override the earlier one. Remove an old line if you are replacing the tag set. - Restart the dedicated server. A restart causes the startup configuration to be read again. Merely saving the file does not reliably update the value advertised by the running server.
- Verify from the server console. Run:
status

Use valid tag syntax
One quoted value
Write a single console-variable assignment. The safest form is a quoted string containing tags separated by commas:
sv_tags="EU,Europe,Hightower"Steamworks describes gametags as commonly comma- or semicolon-separated. Commas are the clearest choice for a TF2 configuration file. Avoid putting separate unquoted words after the assignment, because the console parser can treat them as additional arguments rather than part of one value.

Keep descriptors short and truthful
Choose terms players might reasonably search for and that remain accurate after every restart. For example:
EUorEuropefor a server located in Europe.Hightowerwhen the server is dedicated to, or consistently rotates, that map.- A mode or rules descriptor when it accurately describes the running configuration.
These are descriptive examples, not a guaranteed official vocabulary. The available material does not establish a complete canonical list of accepted tags, so do not assume that every community abbreviation is recognized by every browser. A tag can still be useful as searchable text even when it is not part of a formal list.
Do not leave the value empty
Steamworks states that SetGameTags rejects a null or empty string. If you do not want custom tags, remove the setting or use the server’s normal configuration rather than writing an empty assignment such as sv_tags="". An empty value can be rejected or produce no useful filter metadata.
Handling spaces and punctuation
Prefer simple letters, numbers, and short words. A comma separates tags; it is not part of the tag’s visible text. Keep the quotation marks around the full list when using punctuation or spaces. Avoid copying a sentence, URL, or long marketing phrase into the value: browsers may truncate it, and players cannot use it as a practical filter.
Restarting and checking the running value
The file on disk and the value held by the running process are separate states. Restart after saving so the dedicated server loads the startup configuration. If your panel has separate Save, Restart, and Start controls, use the sequence that actually stops and starts the instance; a panel refresh or browser reload does not reload server variables.

After the server is online, open its console and enter status. Find sv_tags in the output. This check tells you what the server is currently advertising, rather than what a file editor appears to contain. If the line differs from your file, copy the exact output before changing anything else; an automatic tag or another configuration command may be involved.
Why tags may not appear immediately in the browser
Tags improve filtering, not listing eligibility
Gametags allow filtering in matchmaking and server-browser interfaces. They do not constitute a requirement for inclusion in the community-server list. Therefore, a server can be visible without tags, and adding tags does not guarantee a prominent position or a particular number of players.
Allow for browser refresh and caching
A browser may not redraw its result set the instant the process restarts. Clear the current search, run the search again, or reconnect the browser after confirming the value with status. Test with the exact spelling and punctuation in the configuration; a filter for EU is not necessarily the same as one for Europe.
Check the actual advertised string
If status shows the expected tags but a filter still returns no result, the problem may be the browser’s query, a stale result set, or a server-list update delay rather than the configuration file. If status does not show the expected tags, troubleshoot the file path, syntax, startup sequence, and automatic settings first.
Automatic and historical tag behavior
The bots tag
Valve’s February 3, 2010 Team Fortress 2 update notes say that bots is added to sv_tags when a server is running bots. Consequently, the final value shown by status can contain bots even when you did not type it in server.cfg. Treat the console output as authoritative for the current process and do not remove a manually chosen descriptor merely because an automatic tag is also present.

The old sv_alltalk behavior
Valve’s March 6, 2008 update notes say sv_alltalk was removed from the convars that affect custom server tags. Do not expect changing that voice setting to add or remove a corresponding custom tag on a current server. If you want players to know about an alltalk rule, use a deliberately chosen descriptive tag only when it accurately reflects the server’s rules, and verify what is advertised after restarting.
Version and vocabulary limits
Automatic behavior has changed over the game’s history, and the available official material does not define an exhaustive modern tag dictionary. Configuration examples should therefore be treated as text descriptors, not as a promise that Valve will normalize spelling, translate regions, or reject every unknown term. Keep the list understandable to a human player and confirm the result in status.

Troubleshoot a tag that does not work
The file saves, but status shows no change
- Confirm that the edited file is the live instance’s
tf/cfg/server.cfg, not a client copy, backup, or another server’s directory. - Check that the assignment begins with exactly
sv_tagsand that the full value is inside one pair of quotation marks. - Search the file for another
sv_tagsline. Remove the obsolete line or make sure the intended assignment is the one executed last. - Perform a real stop-and-start or restart, then run
statusagain. Saving without restarting leaves the old process state in place.
The server fails to start after the edit
Restore the backup and start the server to separate a syntax problem from an unrelated outage. Re-enter a minimal value such as sv_tags="EU", save it as plain text, and restart. Once that works, add one descriptor at a time. Look at the server console for the first configuration error; do not diagnose from the browser alone.
The value is present, but players cannot find the server with a filter
- Run
statusand copy the exact advertised value, including capitalization and separators. - Search for one short tag rather than a phrase containing several tags.
- Remove stale browser filters and refresh the server list.
- Remember that tags are optional metadata and do not guarantee listing, ranking, or an immediate result.
- Check whether an automatic value such as
botschanged the final string.
The tags keep reverting after every restart
A panel may regenerate server.cfg from a template, or a startup parameter, plugin, or management script may issue a later sv_tags command. Compare the saved file before and after a restart, inspect the panel’s startup and template settings, and use status to identify the value that wins. Make the change in the system that owns the file rather than repeatedly editing a generated copy.
Only part of the list appears
Look for an unclosed quote, an accidental line break, or a delimiter that the parser interpreted as a command. Replace the line with the simple comma-separated form and test again. Keep the list short enough to remain useful in a browser; adding more words does not make a server easier to filter.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting for tag changes
The tag syntax is the same in both arrangements. The practical difference is who controls the files, process, and restart mechanism.

Choose based on operational control rather than on different tag syntax. If you are comfortable administering the process and filesystem, self-hosting gives the most direct diagnosis path. If you want a guided file editor and managed restart controls, a panel reduces routine administration but requires you to understand its templates and permissions.
A repeatable maintenance checklist
- Record the server’s intended region, map rotation, and rule descriptors before editing.
- Back up
tf/cfg/server.cfg. - Keep one quoted
sv_tagsassignment with comma-separated, truthful terms. - Save the file in the live instance, using the panel’s documented root when applicable.
- Restart the dedicated server, not just the management page.
- Run
statusand record the resultingsv_tagsvalue. - Test a browser search after refreshing its filters.
- Investigate automatic additions, generated configuration, or duplicate assignments if the result changes unexpectedly.
Practical examples
Regional and map descriptor
sv_tags="EU,Europe,Hightower"This advertises three descriptors in one value. Use it only when the server is in the stated region and the map policy makes Hightower a meaningful description.
One simple descriptor while diagnosing
sv_tags="EU"A minimal value is useful when troubleshooting because it removes punctuation and multiple-term filtering from the test. After status confirms it works, add other descriptors deliberately.
Replacing an old list
If the file contains sv_tags="OldMap,Test", replace that line rather than adding a second assignment below it. Save, restart, and verify the new list with status. This avoids uncertainty about which command was processed last.

A successful change has three independent confirmations: the live file contains the intended quoted list, the restarted console’s status output reports the expected sv_tags value (plus any legitimate automatic addition), and a refreshed browser search can use the descriptor when filtering. If any one of those checks fails, troubleshoot that layer instead of changing unrelated server settings.
