What ServerSettings.ini controls
ServerSettings.ini stores server-wide gameplay and administration values for a dedicated Conan Exiles server. Depending on the game version and the settings generated for your installation, it can contain rules for PvP or PvE behaviour, progression and performance, harvesting and crafting, player and clan limits, and other world rules.

The safest approach is to treat the file generated by your own server as the authority. Option names, sections and available values can change with game updates. Guides that show a particular key or default may be outdated or may describe a different server build. Open your generated file, find the setting that matches the option you want, and edit that existing entry rather than copying an entire sample configuration.
Where Conan Exiles stores the file
Windows dedicated server
The standard relative path is:

C:ConanServerConanSandboxSavedConfigWindowsServerServerSettings.iniThe installation directory is different for every setup, so do not assume that C:ConanServer is present on your machine. Start at the folder that contains the server’s ConanSandbox directory, then follow Saved, Config and WindowsServer.
Linux host running the Windows server build
Conan Exiles does not provide a native Linux dedicated-server build. Linux installations commonly run the Windows build through Wine, often under a systemd service and an xvfb-run display wrapper. Because the executable remains the Windows build, the configuration directory normally retains the name WindowsServer:

Locate the directory used by your service rather than copying that path literally.
One hosting guide has reported a separate LinuxServer directory. That layout is not confirmed by the official Linux setup documentation and conflicts with the commonly documented path. Before editing, inspect the directories actually created by your installation. If the generated configuration is under WindowsServer, use that directory; do not create a second file in a guessed LinuxServer folder.
Generate ServerSettings.ini on a new server
A fresh installation may not contain the file until the server has completed an initial launch. Generate it before attempting to edit settings:

- Finish installing or updating the dedicated server files.
- Launch the server using your normal startup script, service, or host control panel.
- Wait for the server to finish initialization. A brief first-run startup is enough; you do not need players to join.
- Stop the server cleanly using the same service or panel that started it.
- Browse to
ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServerand confirm thatServerSettings.ininow exists.
If the file is still missing, you may be looking in the wrong installation directory, or the first launch may not have completed. Check the service’s working directory and startup log, then run the server again and allow it to reach its normal ready state before stopping it.
Change a setting safely: the complete procedure
1. Stop the server before touching the file
Do not edit ServerSettings.ini while Conan Exiles is running. The game keeps settings in memory and can write those values back to disk during shutdown. An edit made during runtime can therefore be overwritten when the process exits.
Use the service’s stop action, the host’s Stop button, or your normal console shutdown method. Confirm that the process has actually ended before opening the file. On a self-hosted machine, a running server process, service status, or open log stream can help confirm this; on a managed host, wait for the panel to report that the instance is offline.
2. Make a dated backup
Copy the original file before changing anything. A simple backup such as ServerSettings.ini.backup-2026-10-14 lets you restore the known-good version if the server fails to start or a later edit becomes confusing.
Keep the backup outside the active configuration path if your control panel automatically scans or replaces files. Do not rename the backup to another .ini file in the same directory and expect the game to ignore it; use a separate backup directory or a filename that your host explicitly supports.

3. Open the generated file as plain text
Use a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting. Notepad, a code editor, or a Linux terminal editor can work. Avoid word processors, which may insert formatting characters that make an INI file unreadable.
Preserve the file’s existing character encoding and line-ending style where possible. Before saving, check that the filename remains exactly ServerSettings.ini, not ServerSettings.ini.txt.
4. Find the setting in its section
INI files group keys beneath section headers. A section header appears in square brackets, followed by the keys belonging to that section. Use your editor’s Find command to search for the setting name shown in your own file or for a distinctive part of its label.
Change only the value after the equals sign and leave the section header and key name intact. A generic entry looks like this:

SettingName=ValueThe example is deliberately generic: the exact section and key must come from your generated configuration or from documentation that matches your current game build. If the key is not present, add it only under the section that owns that setting. Placing a valid key in the wrong section may cause it to be ignored.

5. Use the value format the file expects
- Keep Boolean values in the form already used by the file rather than converting them casually between formats.
- Enter numeric values without thousands separators or extra commentary.
- Do not put inline explanations after a value unless the existing file demonstrably supports comments there.
- Do not delete unrelated keys while making one change; another setting may rely on them even if the server can regenerate defaults.
Because exact option names and defaults are version-dependent, this procedure does not prescribe a universal value for a particular gameplay rule. Read the key’s name and nearby entries, and verify the intended value against documentation for the same Conan Exiles release.
6. Save, then restart
Save the file, close the editor, and start the server again. A restart is the dependable way to make the dedicated server read the edited configuration. A hot-reload command has been mentioned by a single source but is not verified across builds, so do not rely on it unless you have tested it on your exact installation and confirmed the result in-game.
After the server is online, test the changed rule with an administrator account or a controlled player action. If the setting affects new structures, characters, or clans only, an existing object may not demonstrate the change immediately; use the behaviour described for that option in documentation for your build.

Managed hosts often provide an editor, an advanced-settings form, or a file manager instead of exposing the underlying machine. The labels and restart workflow differ by provider, but the configuration is still the server’s ServerSettings.ini or a panel that writes equivalent values.
- Stop the Conan Exiles instance from the provider panel if the panel does not stop it automatically before editing.
- Open the provider’s Conan Exiles configuration or file-management page.
- Look for an advanced INI editor, a server-settings section, or the path ending in
ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini. - Export or copy the current configuration before changing it if the panel offers a backup function.
- Change the value, apply or save the panel form, and restart the instance.
- Join the server and verify the behaviour; if it did not change, check whether the panel writes a separate override file or requires a full stop/start rather than a quick restart.
Use the host’s panel where it exists. It can handle permissions and service restarts that are easy to get wrong when editing files through a remote file browser. If the panel does not expose a setting, ask the host which file or override mechanism its Conan Exiles template uses instead of uploading a guessed path.
Self-hosted versus managed configuration

Why a setting does not appear to save
The server was still running
This is the most important failure mode. If you edited the file while the process was active, shutdown may have written the old in-memory values over your edit. Stop the server, restore or reapply the change, save it, and start the server again.
You edited the wrong installation
Multiple copies are common after an update, migration, or test setup. Confirm that the startup service or script points to the same directory whose ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer file you changed. On Linux, inspect the systemd service’s working directory and the Wine prefix; on Windows, check the shortcut, batch file, or service executable path.

Run the server once and stop it normally so the configuration is created. Check for accidental extensions such as ServerSettings.ini.txt and for capitalization or spelling changes in the directory and filename.
The key is in the wrong section
An option can be ignored when it is placed beneath an unrelated section. Compare the key’s location with the section structure in a freshly generated file from the same server version. If the key is absent, add it only where matching documentation specifies; do not scatter duplicate copies through the file.
The panel rewrote the file
A managed host may regenerate configuration from its form fields when the instance starts. If a manual edit disappears, use the panel’s advanced settings, save there, and perform the provider’s full restart procedure. Contact the host if its template does not expose the setting or overwrites a documented value.
The value is valid but its effect is conditional
Some rules affect only newly created entities, a particular gameplay mode, or a specific class of server behaviour. Verify the expected scope for the option rather than assuming that an unchanged existing object proves the edit failed.

How to roll back a bad change
- Stop the server completely.
- Move the current
ServerSettings.iniout of the active configuration directory or rename it for investigation. - Copy your dated backup back into the directory and name it exactly
ServerSettings.ini. - Confirm that the restored file is readable plain text and that its timestamp matches the backup you intend to use.
- Start the server and check its startup log and join behaviour.
If no backup exists, stop making additional edits and preserve the current file. A newly generated file from the same build can show the expected section layout, but it will not restore your previous gameplay choices. On a managed host, use its restore facility if available.
Practical checklist before you change any rule
- Identify the active server installation, not merely a similarly named folder.
- Confirm the generated path ends in
ConanSandbox/Saved/Config/WindowsServer, including on a Linux Wine installation. - Run the server once if
ServerSettings.inidoes not exist. - Stop the process and verify that it is offline.
- Create a dated backup outside the active configuration directory.
- Use a plain-text editor and preserve the existing section structure.
- Read the option name from your generated file; do not assume a guide’s key or default matches your build.
- Save, restart, and test the result before changing another value.
- Keep the previous file until players have confirmed that the new behaviour is correct.
Key points to remember
For a self-hosted Conan Exiles server, the reliable workflow is always the same: generate the configuration with an initial run, stop the server, back up ServerSettings.ini, edit the correct key under its section, save it as plain text, and restart. On Linux, look for the Windows-named configuration directory because the Windows server build is being run through Wine. On a managed host, use the provider’s configuration interface when available and follow its stop/save/restart sequence.
