Its documented default, copy, passes the source video through unchanged, so changing an encoding bitrate will not affect that video in copy mode. To expose the documented encoding controls, select H264 as the video codec, then choose a bitrate that fits YouTube’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate—and your actual upload capacity.
Before changing anything: check whether Restreamer is encoding
This article covers datarhei Restreamer, the self-hosted streaming software—not Restream’s hosted multistreaming product. Restreamer’s encoding guide, which has a 2022 footer and describes behavior from version 0.4.0, says the default video codec is copy. In that mode, Restreamer uses the source video unmodified; the documented encoding bitrate option is not changing its output. The guide says selecting H264 exposes encoding options, including bitrate, FPS, preset, profile, and tune. Labels and layout can differ across installed versions, so treat these as documented settings rather than a guaranteed current click-by-click path. Read Restreamer’s encoding guide.

Restreamer’s YouTube publication instructions describe a separate task: choosing Publication Service, entering a valid YouTube streaming ID, and saving. The connected stream’s bitrate can then be viewed in the main Restreamer window. That displayed value is monitoring information, not a documented editable bitrate control. See Restreamer’s YouTube publication guide.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

There is no single correct bitrate for every live stream. YouTube’s recommended video bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following are YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations on its encoder-settings page, accessed in 2026; they are platform recommendations, not guarantees of stability or independently measured results.

| YouTube input mode | Recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 34 Mbps |
Codec matters: for 1080p at 30 fps, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. Do not apply the H.264 figures to a stream using another codec. Confirm the applicable target in YouTube’s live encoder settings before configuring a production stream.
Make sure your upload path can sustain the target
The target must fit the upload bandwidth available to the entire streaming path, not just a speed-test result taken under different conditions. Restream’s 2024 support guidance recommends keeping video bitrate at no more than half the measured upload speed. This is a troubleshooting rule of thumb from Restream, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee. Leave room for audio and other network traffic, and consider whether the connection remains steady during the event.

Change the documented Restreamer encoding bitrate
- Check the video codec. In your installed Restreamer version, find the video encoding settings and confirm whether the codec is
copyorH264. The exact menu path may vary by version. - Enable encoding if you need a new outgoing bitrate. Select
H264to expose the documented encoding options. This re-encodes the video—even if the source is already H.264—and can use significant CPU resources. - Set the Bitrate option. Enter a target consistent with your YouTube codec, resolution, and frame rate, then check that it fits the upload capacity of the streaming connection.
- Review the rest of the stream configuration. YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) for live encoding and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals not exceeding four seconds. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. These settings do not replace choosing a sustainable bitrate.
- Test before the event. Use representative movement and audio, then watch YouTube’s stream-health indicator and messages. YouTube Help specifically recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the real stream.
Changing bitrate is not automatically the right fix for every unstable stream. Raising it can exceed the connection’s capacity; lowering it may help a constrained connection, but the cause could instead be network quality or an overloaded encoder.

Troubleshoot instability and bitrate warnings
- The bitrate setting seems to have no effect: check whether the video codec is still
copy. In the documented behavior, copy mode passes the source video through unchanged; select H264 if you need Restreamer to re-encode it at a different bitrate. - YouTube reports a high or low bitrate: compare the incoming signal with the recommendation for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Read the accompanying stream-health messages rather than changing bitrate in isolation. YouTube’s health diagnostics include high and low bitrate warnings, long keyframe intervals, and insufficient incoming video.
- Viewers buffer or YouTube reports insufficient incoming video: check whether the upload path can sustain the target and whether the connection is dropping or varying. YouTube describes
videoIngestionStarvedas insufficient incoming video that can cause viewer buffering. - The Restreamer machine is overloaded: review CPU load. Re-encoding uses processing resources; Restream’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing bitrate, resolution, or FPS when the encoder device is overloaded.
- Upload speed is low or inconsistent: test the connection used by the streaming device, check for router, modem, or ISP issues, and try wired Ethernet if practical. Restream suggests Ethernet for persistently low speeds; it is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee.
