How to Change Products per Page in WooCommerce

To change how many products appear at once in WooCommerce, first identify what displays the catalog: a Product Collection block, a legacy [products] shortcode, or a classic-theme Shop archive. Each uses a different setting. For a block or shortcode, change that component’s count; for a classic archive, use WooCommerce’s loop_shop_per_page PHP filter.

Identify what renders the product listing

Open the Shop page or catalog template in the editor and inspect the product listing. A Product Collection block has its own pagination and Products per Page controls. A legacy listing may be a Shortcode block containing [products]. A classic-theme Shop archive is rendered by the theme rather than by an ordinary page’s content. Block-theme catalogs are template-driven and are edited in the Site Editor.

The distinction matters: a block setting changes that collection, shortcode attributes affect that shortcode output, and the PHP filter changes the classic shop loop. WooCommerce’s documentation covers these paths separately: classic archive, Product Collection block, products shortcode, and block-theme catalog.

Change the count in a Product Collection block

1. Open the page or template containing the Product Collection block in the WordPress editor. For a block-theme catalog, open the Shop or product catalog template in the Site Editor.

2. Select the Product Collection block that displays the products.

3. In the block settings, adjust Products per Page to the number you want shown at one time.

4. Check the collection’s pagination setting and preview the result. Pagination controls are not displayed when the collection is configured to show only one page.

This setting controls the number of products in that collection at a time; it is not the number of product columns in a row. WooCommerce documents columns as a separate layout setting.

Set the count for a legacy products shortcode

If the listing is made with WooCommerce’s legacy [products] shortcode, the limit attribute sets how many products the shortcode displays. Add paginate="true" if you want pagination.

[products limit="12" paginate="true"]

Replace 12 with the desired count. The value controls the shortcode’s listing, rather than every product listing across the store. The shortcode remains usable in a Shortcode block; WooCommerce describes blocks as the more interactive and customizable product-display option.

Change the classic Shop archive count with PHP

For a classic-theme Shop archive, WooCommerce documents the loop_shop_per_page filter. Its example returns 9 products per page. Add a function like this using a child theme or a plugin that allows custom functions:

add_filter( 'loop_shop_per_page', 'my_custom_shop_per_page', 20 );

function my_custom_shop_per_page( $count ) {
    return 9;
}

Change 9 to the page size you want. Before using this route, confirm the product catalog display is set to Show products; the filter is intended for the classic shop product loop.

Do not put the snippet directly in a parent theme’s functions.php: WooCommerce warns that a theme update will wipe those edits. If PHP changes are outside your comfort level, use the block setting where available or get help from a qualified WooCommerce developer. WooCommerce says customizations are not covered by its support policy and points users to a Woo Agency Partner or Codeable for extension work.

Choose the right method

If the setting does not appear to work

• The wrong listing is being changed: verify whether the visible products come from a block, shortcode, classic archive, or catalog template, then change the control for that renderer.

• There are no pagination controls: for a Product Collection block, check whether it is set to show only one page; for a shortcode, confirm that paginate="true" is present.

• The classic archive does not show the expected count: confirm the catalog display is set to “Show products” and that the filter is being added to the active child theme or custom-functions plugin.

• You changed columns instead of page size: columns control products per row; use Products per Page, the shortcode’s limit, or the archive filter for the total shown at once.
