For a Microsoft 365 work or school account, you can change your profile picture from Outlook on the web, classic Outlook for Windows, or the My Account portal. The current Microsoft instructions describe how to add or change the account photo, but do not document a self-service way to remove it. If you need it deleted, contact your organization’s administrator.
Change your picture in Outlook on the web
This is the direct route for a work or school account. Microsoft says the updated photo appears the next time you sign in to Microsoft 365.

- Select your profile picture at the top of Outlook on the web.
- Select View account.
- In My account, select your profile picture.
- Under Change your photo, choose Upload a new photo.
- Choose the image file, then select Apply.
Some account details, including name or job title, may be supplied by your IT or HR department. Microsoft’s Outlook on the web instructions cover this change-photo workflow.
Change it from classic Outlook for Windows
Classic Outlook opens a browser-based account flow rather than changing the account photo entirely inside the desktop app. Microsoft lists this method for Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016.

- When Outlook opens a browser, sign in again if prompted. Select your profile picture in the browser, then select it again.
- In Change photo, choose Change photo, locate the image, and open it.
- Adjust the size, zoom, or rotation if needed, then select Save.
Microsoft lists JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, and TIF as usable formats for this route. Its classic Outlook guidance says the new photo can take up to 48 hours to appear. See Microsoft’s classic Outlook steps.

Why the picture may not update everywhere immediately
Update timing depends on the route and Microsoft experience. For Outlook on the web, Microsoft says the new photo appears the next time you sign in to Microsoft 365. The classic Outlook instructions allow up to 48 hours. For profile-card changes, Microsoft gives estimates of up to 24 hours for the new profile experience and up to 36 hours for other users; changes made through the Delve or SharePoint editor may take up to 72 hours. These are route-specific estimates, not a single guaranteed refresh time. Microsoft’s profile-card instructions describe the alternate route: select Update your profile, then use the camera icon. Depending on your setup, you may see an Edit details page or a Change your profile photo window.

Can you remove the Microsoft 365 profile photo?
The current Microsoft instructions for work or school profile pictures explain adding or changing a photo, but do not document a user-facing self-service removal command. If you need the account photo removed, ask your organization’s administrator or IT/HR department what policy and process apply; public guidance does not establish a universal removal procedure.
Do not confuse the account photo with a picture attached to a local Outlook contact. In People or Contacts, Remove Picture removes the picture from that saved contact on your computer; it does not remove your Microsoft 365 account photo. Likewise, deleting an Outlook mail profile is not documented as a way to remove the account-level photo. Microsoft’s contact-picture instructions apply only to contact images.

If the photo control is missing or disabled
- Check that you are signed in with the work or school account whose photo you want to change.
- Try the Outlook on the web or My Account route if you started in classic Outlook.
- If the edit option is absent or unavailable in each route, contact your organization’s administrator or IT/HR department; the organization may control profile details.
Older Outlook Web App guidance is for organizations using Exchange Server 2013 or 2010, not the current Microsoft 365 Outlook on the web workflow. Its 500 KB limit should not be treated as a Microsoft 365 photo limit. The legacy Outlook Web App article identifies those older environments.
