What Online Status Means on Discord (2024)
Discord presence is your availability indicator. It affects what people see in chat and in your profile’s presence area, and it helps others decide whether to message you.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

When you change your status manually, Discord will typically keep that state until you switch again (or until the app is restarted, depending on your settings and device activity).

Before You Change Anything: Status Types and Permissions
There are two things people often mix up: your presence status (Online/Idle/DND/Invisible) and your custom status (a message like Coffee, working on a build).
- Presence status: controls whether you show as online/idle/dnd/invisible.
- Custom status: a text message shown under your username.
- Activity: what Discord displays you’re “playing/streaming/listening to,” sometimes auto-detected or integrated (e.g., Spotify).
Also note: if you’re in a server channel and you’re focused on not being disturbed, Do Not Disturb and Invisible are usually the safest choices.
Change Online Status on Discord (Desktop and Web)
On desktop, Discord puts status controls directly in the bottom-left panel. The UI is consistent across Windows, macOS, and Discord Web.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWindows and macOS App
- Open Discord.
- Look at the bottom-left area near your avatar.
- Click your current status (it may read Online, Idle, Do Not Disturb, or Invisible).
- Select the state you want: Online, Idle, Do Not Disturb, or Invisible.
If you want it to last, use manual states (Online/Idle/DND/Invisible). Discord’s auto-away behavior can change you to Idle based on your inactivity.
Discord Web (browser)
- Go to discord.com and sign in.
- In the left sidebar, click your profile area (near your avatar).
- Click your current status.
- Choose Online, Idle, Do Not Disturb, or Invisible.
Browser-based Discord behaves like the desktop app for presence updates, but it may refresh status less reliably if your tab sleeps.

Change Online Status on iPhone and iPad (iOS)
On iOS, Discord keeps presence controls under your profile and account menu.
- Open the Discord app.
- Tap your profile icon at the bottom-right.
- Tap Set Status (or a similar label in your app build).
- Pick the presence state you want: Online, Idle, Do Not Disturb, or Invisible.
On iPhone and iPad, iOS background restrictions can cause presence refresh delays, especially after switching apps or locking your device.

Change Online Status on Android
Android mirrors the iOS flow: status selection lives in your profile area.
- Open the Discord app.
- Tap your profile icon (bottom-right).
- Tap Set Status.
- Select Online, Idle, Do Not Disturb, or Invisible.
If you don’t see the exact wording, search for a status option under your profile menu—Discord occasionally changes label text across versions.
Set a Custom Status and Choose Visibility
Custom status is separate from your presence. You can be Online but show a message like Building a website, or be Invisible and still show a short note.
Rank #3
Set a Custom Status
- On desktop or web, click your current status near the bottom-left.
- Select Set a Custom Status (or Add a custom status).
- Type your message.
- Choose how long it lasts (commonly options like Clear after 1 hour / Clear after 8 hours / Clear after 24 hours / Do not clear depending on the UI).
- Click Save.
Control What Others See
- Presence state controls availability (Online/Idle/DND/Invisible).
- Custom status controls the text people see under your name.
- Activity can display game/app integrations automatically.
If your custom status disappears too soon, re-check the duration you chose when saving it.
Change Activity (So Your Status Reflects What You’re Doing)
Activity is what Discord shows next to your presence, like Playing, Streaming, or Listening to music. Some of it is automatic; some of it you control through integrations.
Playing/Watching/Streaming
- Open User Settings in Discord.
- Go to Activity Settings (the name can appear as Game Activity or similar).
- Find the option for how Discord displays detected games/activities.
- Adjust settings that control detection or display behavior.
On many installs, Discord detects active software and shows it in your presence automatically. If you don’t want that, disable the activity display/detection toggle available in your activity settings.
Spotify and Other Integrations
- Open User Settings.
- Go to Connections.
- Check connected accounts like Spotify.
- Toggle or disconnect the integration if you want your music activity to stop showing.
Connections are powerful: Spotify can show what you’re listening to even when you manually set your presence state to Online or Idle.
Go Invisible or Appear Offline
People often say “change Online status” when they really mean “make Discord stop looking like I’m available.” For that, use Invisible or Do Not Disturb.
Rank #4
- Invisible: you appear offline to others in most cases, while still using Discord.
- Do Not Disturb: you remain visible, but notifications are handled differently for your availability.
To switch: open the status menu and select Invisible (or Do Not Disturb) exactly as you would for Online.

Presence issues usually come from inactivity timers, app sleep states, or overlapping sessions on multiple devices.
Status won’t update
- Toggle the status twice (e.g., Online → Idle → Online) to force a refresh.
- Fully quit and reopen the Discord app.
- If you’re using a browser tab, reload the page.
Also check you’re signed into the right account—easy to happen if you have multiple Discord logins.
It flips back to Online
- If you’re switching to Idle/Invisible on one device, make sure other devices aren’t keeping you active.
- Discord may move you to Idle or Online based on activity and inactivity detection.
If you want it stable, set the presence state on all active sessions (desktop, web, mobile) or sign out from devices you don’t want affecting presence.

Mobile and desktop operating system modes (like iOS Focus or Windows Do Not Disturb) can impact notifications—not always the Discord presence itself. If your goal is to stop people messaging you, prioritize Discord’s Do Not Disturb or Invisible over system-level settings.

Presence shows the wrong device
Discord can merge presence across sessions. If you changed status on mobile but your friends still see Online, check whether your desktop app is actively running with different presence state.
- Check status on the device where Discord is currently foreground or recently used.
- Close Discord on other devices to prevent it from overriding your preference.
Discord says you’re using an activity you didn’t set
- Disable integrations in Connections (Spotify, GitHub, or other apps).
- Check your Activity Settings for game/activity detection toggles.
- Restart Discord after changing integrations.
Best Practices (Avoid Accidental Online)
- Set Invisible when you want to work without being pulled into messages.
- Use Do Not Disturb if you’re around but don’t want notification noise.
- Be consistent across devices: one status change on your phone may not override an active session on your desktop.
- Watch custom status duration so it doesn’t clear while you’re still mid-task.
FAQ
Why does my Discord status keep changing by itself?
Discord can move you between Online and Idle based on activity/inactivity. If multiple devices are logged in, one device staying active can keep you from appearing Idle or Invisible.
Can I appear Invisible and still get notifications?
Yes. Invisible mainly changes how you appear to others. Your actual notification behavior depends on Discord settings and device notification controls.

Does changing my custom status make me appear offline?
No. A custom status is just text. To appear offline-like, you need to set your presence to Invisible.
Where do I find the status menu on Discord?
On desktop and web, it’s near your avatar in the bottom-left/profile area. On iOS and Android, it’s inside your profile menu under the status option.
Can server roles force a status?
Discord roles don’t typically force your presence state. Only your own presence/activity settings or active device sessions usually affect what others see.
Bottom Line
To change your Online status on Discord in 2024, use the presence menu and pick the state you want: Online, Idle, Do Not Disturb, or Invisible. If you also want a message under your name, set a custom status separately.
If your status won’t stick, check for overlapping sessions across devices, reload/restart Discord, and review integrations in Connections that may drive activity displays.
