To change subtitles or audio for one Netflix show or movie, open Audio & Subtitles in the player and choose a track offered for that title. To set preferences for future viewing, change the language options on the Netflix profile. Playback speed and subtitle appearance are separate settings, and their availability and controls depend on the device.
Change subtitles or audio for the show or movie you’re watching
- Start playing the title.
- Open the player controls. On a phone, tablet, or computer, tap or click the screen. On most TVs, streaming players, Blu-ray players, cable boxes, and game systems, press the remote’s up or down arrow. On Apple TV, swipe up or press the remote’s up arrow.
- Select Audio & Subtitles. On some TVs, language choices appear along the bottom of the screen without that icon. If the menu offers Other, select it to see the fuller list.
- Choose the audio track, subtitle language, or caption option you want.
The choices shown depend on the title and supported device. For a downloaded title, Netflix shows the two most relevant languages. Some dialogue in a language other than the title’s original language may still appear with subtitles when subtitles are turned off. Netflix’s subtitle and audio guidance also notes that most Kids titles watched from an adult profile do not save subtitle and audio preferences; those preferences are saved when the title is watched from a Kids profile.

Set language preferences on a Netflix profile
Profile preferences are separate from the choices you make in a title’s player. Display language changes the language of Netflix’s interface; preferred audio and subtitle languages affect which tracks Netflix may select for future viewing. A profile preference cannot add a track that is unavailable for a particular title.

Adjust playback speed and subtitle appearance
Netflix supports playback-speed controls on mobile devices. Subtitle and closed-caption styling options include font, size, shadow, and background color. These are distinct from choosing a language track. Netflix’s accessibility features overview describes these options, but does not give one universal navigation path for every device; menu labels and availability can differ.

Audio description is a narration track that describes on-screen action and other visual details. While a title is playing, open Audio & Subtitles and select a track labeled Audio Description to turn it on. To turn it off, choose an audio track without that label. Netflix says audio description is available for most Netflix originals and many other titles, but it may be missing from particular seasons or episodes. See Netflix’s accessibility guidance.

Troubleshoot language settings that do not stick
Audio preference keeps resetting
If the preferred audio language does not persist, Netflix advises playing a title rated Teens or above for 2–3 minutes with that audio language selected. Its guidance says this saves the choice for future viewing. Kids titles watched from an adult profile generally do not save subtitle and audio preferences; use a Kids profile for those titles if you want the preferences saved. Netflix explains both cases in its subtitle and audio help page.
Subtitles appear even though they are turned off
Some dialogue in a language other than the title’s original language may be subtitled regardless of the subtitle setting. This is separate from the main subtitle track you selected in the player.

Captions or a language are missing
