NAT Type on your PS5 isn’t a switch you can toggle inside the console. It’s a result of how your home network is configured (and sometimes how your ISP routes you), especially around inbound connections, firewalls, and address translation.
This guide walks you through the proper technique to change NAT type on PS5: adjust router behavior (UPnP, port forwarding, DMZ, or bridge mode) and remove common blockers like double NAT and CGNAT. You’ll also learn exactly what to check on the PS5 to confirm your changes worked.

What NAT Type on PS5 actually is (and what you should aim for)
On PS5, NAT Type is a shorthand for how your console receives and responds to incoming network connections used by online games and party chat. PlayStation typically prefers NAT Type 2 for the smoothest matchmaking and fewer connectivity issues.

- NAT Type 1: Most open. Usually requires either correct public routing or a network setup where the PS5 is effectively reachable without restrictive translation (often not practical for home users).
- NAT Type 2: Generally the sweet spot—good connectivity for most users.
- NAT Type 3: More restrictive. You may still play online, but you can see more matchmaking failures, voice/party issues, or longer connection times.
Crucially: if your ISP uses CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT), router changes at home may not be enough. Your router can only improve what it controls.
Before you change anything: verify your current state
Start by recording what NAT type you have today and what the PS5 thinks about your connection. That makes troubleshooting concrete instead of guesswork.
- On your PS5, go to Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
- Write down the displayed NAT Type.
- If you see a note about UPnP, NAT Type, or connectivity, capture that wording too (screenshots help).
If you have multiple consoles or devices on the same network, also test another device if possible (for example, a game console or PC). This can reveal whether the issue is PS5-specific (static IP/port rules) or network-wide (double NAT/CGNAT).
Prerequisites and what you need from your network
To modify the network behavior that affects NAT type, you’ll need access to your router and enough info to avoid breaking anything else.
- Your router admin login (often
admin/adminonly on first setup; otherwise look in your router label or ISP app). - The PS5 IP address (for port forwarding and DMZ).
- Whether your ISP provides a modem/router combo or separate devices.
- Whether your router supports UPnP and/or manual port forwarding.
For reliable port forwarding, you’ll also want to assign your PS5 a static LAN IP so the forwarding rules don’t break when the PS5 reconnects.
Best method: enable UPnP (fastest path to NAT Type 2)
UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) lets the PS5 automatically request temporary inbound mappings on your router. When it works, it’s the quickest way to improve NAT type without manually forwarding ports.
Step-by-step: turn on UPnP in your router
The exact menu names vary by brand, but you’re looking for something like UPnP, UPnP IGD, or NAT-PMP.
- Log into your router admin page.
- Find UPnP under sections like Advanced, NAT, or Security.
- Enable UPnP.
- Save settings and reboot the router if the UI recommends it.
On many routers, UPnP defaults to off for security. If your router is managed by your ISP, you may need to adjust it in the ISP portal instead of the local web UI.

Confirm on the PS5
- Go to Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
- Check the reported NAT Type.
If NAT stays Type 3, UPnP may be blocked by your router settings, firmware, parental controls, or ISP configuration.
Reliable method: set a static IP for your PS5 + port forwarding
If UPnP doesn’t improve your NAT type, port forwarding gives you deterministic control. The most common reason port forwarding “fails” is that the PS5’s local IP changes—so first, lock it down.
Step 1: assign a static IP to the PS5 (pick one approach)
Either method works. The most stable is to reserve an IP in the router, then set PS5 to use DHCP-assigned values only from that reservation.
- In your PS5, note the current IP: Settings > Network > View Connection Status.
- In your router, open LAN or DHCP settings.
- Find Address Reservation, Static DHCP, or DHCP Reservation.
- Add a reservation for your PS5’s MAC address and set it to the IP you observed.
- Save and reboot the router if prompted.
Common gotcha: Avoid reusing the same IP as your router gateway or other reserved devices.
Step 2: forward the PlayStation ports
Port requirements can vary by game and configuration, but PlayStation’s commonly referenced ports include:
| Protocol | Ports | Purpose (practical) |
|---|---|---|
| UDP | 3478 | NAT traversal / matchmaking-related traffic |
| UDP | 3479 | NAT traversal-related traffic |
| TCP | 3480 | Session-related control traffic |
| UDP | 9303-9304 | PlayStation voice/party and related services |
Not all routers label them the same way. You’re aiming to create rules that map the external port range to the PS5’s static IP.
Step 3: add port forwarding rules
- In your router, go to Advanced > NAT or Port Forwarding.
- Create a rule for each port/protocol pairing listed above.
- Set Internal IP to your PS5’s reserved IP.
- Set Internal Port equal to the external port (typical).
- Set Protocol to UDP or TCP as required.
- Save and reboot if the router requires it.
If your router supports a “custom service” name, use something obvious like PS5-NAT so you can find it later.

Advanced alternatives when UPnP/port forwarding won’t work
At some point, your limitation won’t be the router UI—it’ll be your network topology. Double NAT and ISP routing often block NAT Type improvements no matter what rules you add.
DMZ to the PS5
DMZ places one device as “most exposed” behind your router, which can effectively make NAT behavior less restrictive for that device.
- Reserve your PS5 IP in the router (required; DMZ depends on a stable internal address).
- Enable DMZ (sometimes under Security or NAT).
- Set DMZ Host IP to the PS5 reserved IP.
- Save and reboot the router.
Security tradeoff: DMZ increases exposure. Use it only as a targeted fix, and consider disabling it once NAT is correct.

If your ISP equipment is doing NAT and your own router is also doing NAT, your PS5 sits behind two translation layers. This commonly prevents NAT Type 2 behavior.
- Check what devices are in your path: modem/router from ISP, then your own router.
- On the ISP gateway, look for Bridge Mode, Pass-through, or IP Passthrough.
- Enable bridge/passthrough if your ISP supports it.
- Reboot devices in this order: ISP gateway → your router → your PS5.
If your ISP does not support bridge mode, you may still improve things by turning your router into an access point mode (disabling its NAT/firewall) where supported.
Router replacement or using a dedicated router
Some older ISP routers have limited UPnP behavior or broken port forwarding. If you’ve confirmed your settings and the PS5 still reports NAT Type 3, upgrading or replacing the routing layer can fix it—especially with features like robust UPnP, correct NAT hairpinning, and reliable port forwarding.
Before buying, check your router’s documentation for UPnP, port forwarding, and DMZ support.
Diagnosing the real blocker: double NAT, CGNAT, and strict firewalls
These are the three most common reasons you “do everything right” and NAT type still won’t improve.

Double NAT
Double NAT usually happens when you have both an ISP gateway/router and your own router doing NAT at the same time.
- You may notice the gateway IP on your devices is not your actual ISP modem IP.
- Port forwarding rules may not reach the PS5 because the first NAT layer is swallowing traffic.
Fix: bridge mode/passthrough on ISP equipment or access point mode on your own router.
CGNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT)
With CGNAT, your public IP isn’t actually yours. Your home router receives a private IP from the ISP, and inbound mapping won’t work the way port forwarding assumes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix options are limited:
- Ask your ISP to disable CGNAT or provide a public IPv4 address.
- Consider an ISP change if they won’t enable public routing.
If CGNAT is the cause, you can enable UPnP, set DMZ, and forward ports all day—you still may end up with NAT Type 3 or inconsistent behavior.
Strict firewall / security features
Security settings like “SIP ALG,” “SPI firewall,” or aggressive filtering can interfere with NAT traversal services.
- Try disabling only the features that are known to conflict (if you can’t identify them, leave them alone).
- Confirm UPnP is allowed through firewall rules if there’s a specific UPnP toggle.
How to set your PS5 connection correctly (settings that matter)
The PS5 network settings don’t “change NAT,” but they can prevent other issues that make NAT testing confusing.
- Use LAN cable if possible for testing. Wired connections reduce variable behavior and can narrow down network problems.
- When you configure internet, avoid manually setting DNS/MTU unless you have a specific reason. Use Automatic initially.
- After router changes, restart the PS5 network test so it re-evaluates NAT mapping.
Also check whether you’re using a VPN on your router or PS5. VPN routing can change perceived NAT behavior and may restrict inbound traversal.

- Apply router changes (UPnP enable, port forwarding, DMZ, bridge mode).
- Reboot the router (if you changed settings that require it).
- Reboot the PS5 (or at least disconnect/reconnect the internet).
- Run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
- Record the NAT Type result.
If you’re chasing NAT Type 2, aim to see the NAT type become “Type 2” consistently across multiple tests (for example, after a full router reboot).
Common mistakes that make NAT type worse
- Port forwarding to the wrong IP: rules point to an old DHCP lease, not the PS5.
- Port forwarding only one protocol: forwarding TCP ports without UDP (or vice versa) can leave traversal broken.
- Forgetting to save and reboot: some routers require a restart for NAT mappings to take effect.
- Disabling UPnP and assuming port forwarding will fill the gap: leaving UPnP on is usually fine while you test, but if the UI lets you run both, don’t mix random conflicting toggles.
- Using Wi-Fi for initial debugging only: Wi-Fi doesn’t inherently change NAT, but it can create intermittent failures that look like NAT issues.
Troubleshooting checklist when NAT type won’t improve
Work down this list. Each step is a targeted test for the most likely causes.
- Confirm your PS5 IP is reserved in the router. Re-check the PS5 View Connection Status IP matches the reservation.
- Enable UPnP and retest without changing anything else.
- Verify port forwarding rules match both protocol and ports exactly (UDP vs TCP; correct port numbers; correct internal IP).
- Temporarily enable DMZ to the PS5 reserved IP and test. If DMZ works, the issue is with forwarding/routing rules—not PS5.
- Check for double NAT: if your setup includes both an ISP gateway and your own router doing NAT, enable bridge mode/pass-through or set your router to access point mode.
- Check for CGNAT: if ports don’t behave as expected even with bridge mode and DMZ, ask your ISP for a public IPv4 or CGNAT status.
If you want a clean rollback plan, document your current router settings first—then change only one major variable at a time.

Comparison: UPnP vs port forwarding vs DMZ vs bridge mode
| Method | Best when | Effort | Security impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPnP | Your router fully supports UPnP and allows it through firewall | Low | Low to medium |
| Port forwarding | You want precise inbound mappings for PS5 | Medium | Medium |
| DMZ | UPnP/port forwarding are failing but you need a “last-mile” test | Low | High (target device exposure) |
| Bridge mode / pass-through | Double NAT is blocking correct traversal | Medium to high | Low to medium |
If your goal is simply stable online play and you’re not sure where the failure is occurring, UPnP is the fastest first attempt. If you need reliability, port forwarding plus a reserved IP is the most controlled option.
FAQs
Can I change NAT Type on PS5 without touching my router?
No. PS5 reports NAT type based on how your network allows inbound traffic. Without router-side changes (or an ISP routing change), you usually can’t force NAT Type 2 if the underlying network path is restrictive.
Why does my NAT type keep flipping after I change settings?
Most often it’s because the PS5 IP isn’t reserved (DHCP lease changes) or your router is rebooting and UPnP mappings aren’t persisting. Double NAT and ISP changes can also cause inconsistent results.
Will a faster internet speed change NAT Type?
Speed can improve connection stability and latency, but NAT type is about routing and address translation behavior. A gigabit connection can still show NAT Type 3 if the router/ISP configuration is restrictive.
Do I need to forward ports for every game?
No. The core ports used for NAT traversal and PlayStation services should be sufficient for most online behavior. Individual games may use additional ports, but the baseline NAT/traversal ports are what typically matter for NAT type reporting.
What if my ISP won’t provide a public IP?
If CGNAT is the cause, you may not be able to reach NAT Type 2 reliably. Ask what IPv4 options you have (public IP, CGNAT disable, or alternative routing). Some users only get consistent NAT improvements after an ISP change.
Bottom Line
To change NAT Type on PS5, you don’t “modify NAT” inside the console—you fix the network path that creates it. Start with UPnP, then move to static IP + port forwarding, and use DMZ or bridge mode only when the topology requires it.
If NAT Type still won’t improve after those steps, treat double NAT and CGNAT as the likely blockers and verify with ISP support. That’s the difference between endless trial-and-error and a proper, repeatable solution.
