In Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse to adjust pointer speed, vertical wheel scrolling, scrolling direction, and whether inactive windows scroll when you hover over them. Horizontal wheel scrolling is configured separately in Additional mouse settings.
Change how fast the pointer moves
- Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Under Mouse pointer speed, move the slider toward the slower or faster end.
- Move the pointer around and adjust the slider until its movement feels comfortable.
This slider controls pointer movement speed; it does not change how much the wheel scrolls. Microsoft’s Change mouse settings page documents the Windows mouse controls.

Change how much the mouse wheel scrolls
On the same Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse page, use the Scrolling options to choose a vertical-wheel behavior:

- Multiple lines at a time: Use Lines to scroll at a time to choose the increment. Fewer lines give finer movement; more lines move through a page faster.
- One screen at a time: Each wheel action makes a larger jump. The lines-per-scroll control applies to the multiple-lines mode, not this mode.
Set scrolling direction and inactive-window behavior
Choose the direction
If scrolling feels reversed, change Scrolling direction in the Mouse settings page and try the available direction that matches your preference.

Scroll a window without selecting it
Turn Scroll inactive windows when hovering over them on if you want to scroll a window simply by pointing at it, even while another window is active. Turn it off if you want scrolling limited to the active window.
Configure horizontal wheel scrolling
- In the Mouse settings page, open Related settings > Additional mouse settings.
- Select the Wheel tab.
- Set the number of characters to move when tilting the wheel horizontally.
This setting only applies if your mouse supports horizontal scrolling. Microsoft Support notes, “The mouse has to support horizontal scrolling for this setting to apply.”

If pointer movement still feels wrong
Enhance pointer precision is a separate pointer behavior available in the mouse settings area. It is optional: try it if you want to see whether it suits your pointer control, but it is not required to change pointer speed and is not universally better.
