To change the map immediately, run changelevel <mapname> in the Team Fortress 2 server console. To define the normal map rotation, edit tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt, placing one recognized map name on each line in the order players should see them. The server reads those edits on the next map change.

What you need before changing a map
These instructions apply to a Team Fortress 2 server that you administer, whether it is running on your own machine or through a hosting panel that provides console and file access. You need two kinds of access:

- File access to the TF2 game directory so you can edit
tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt.
Make a copy of the existing mapcycle.txt before editing it. That gives you a known-good version to restore if a typo or unwanted entry causes a problem. If your host provides a web control panel rather than a traditional console, use the panel’s server console and file manager; the commands and file contents remain the same.
Change the current map immediately
The documented command for an immediate switch is:
changelevel <mapname>Replace <mapname> with the map’s internal name, not its display title. For example:

changelevel cp_dustbowlRun the command in the server console. The server changes to the specified map rather than waiting for the current round to finish. Warn connected players before using it because the active round is interrupted by the transition.
Common immediate-change examples

The Steam Source Dedicated Server documentation describes changelevel (map) as changing the server to the specified map. If the command fails, verify the name first instead of guessing at spelling or adding a file extension.

Check whether a map is installed
Use the maps command to inspect the maps the server recognizes:
maps *To narrow the output, include a partial name:
maps dustThe result lets you confirm the exact internal identifier before using changelevel or editing the rotation. This is especially useful for custom content, where the name shown on a download page may not match the name the server expects.

Do not add the .bsp extension
Map files are stored with a .bsp extension, but the mapcycle format uses the map name without that extension. Write:
cp_dustbowlDo not write:
cp_dustbowl.bspApply the same rule to the argument passed to changelevel: use the recognized map name as shown by maps.
Set the default map rotation in mapcycle.txt
The relevant TF2 rotation file is:
tf/cfg/mapcycle.txtOpen that file in a plain-text editor. Put exactly one map name on each line, without .bsp, and arrange the lines in the order you want the server to use.
Example rotation
cp_dustbowl
cp_gorge
ctf_2fort
pl_upwardIn this example, the server’s default sequence is Dustbowl, then Gorge, then 2Fort, then Upward as map changes occur. The order of the lines is the order of the rotation; moving a line changes where that map appears in the sequence.

Editing procedure
- Stop making administrative changes for the moment and note the current active map, so you can test the next transition deliberately.
- Open the TF2 server’s
tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt. - Remove entries you no longer want, or add new entries using the exact names returned by
maps. - Place one map identifier per line. Keep the spelling, underscores and prefixes exactly as recognized by the server.
- Save the file as plain text under the same name,
mapcycle.txt. - Leave the server running if you want to test a live transition; the documented behavior is that edits take effect on the next map change.
There is no need to add comments, commas or a list marker. A line should contain the map identifier itself. Blank lines or formatting inserted by a rich-text editor can make the file harder to audit, so use a plain-text editor.
When the new rotation takes effect
Saving the file does not restart the current round. The mapcycle guide documents that changes are applied on the next map change. Players therefore remain on the current map until the server transitions, after which the updated file is used.
For a controlled test, save the file and then observe the next normal map transition. If you need an immediate map switch, use changelevel <mapname>; that command tests whether the target map itself loads, while the next rotation transition tests whether the edited mapcycle is being read in the intended order.
Two different tests to run

Save the file and verify the next map transition. |
A successful map-load test does not by itself prove that the file was saved in the correct directory or that its line order is correct. Conversely, a correctly formatted file cannot load a map that the server does not recognize, so perform both checks when troubleshooting.

Use Workshop maps in a rotation
Valve’s Team Fortress 2 update notes from June 11, 2015, state that Workshop map names can be used with map, changelevel, nextlevel and mapcycle configuration commands. This means a Workshop identifier can be placed in mapcycle.txt when the server recognizes that identifier.

- Make sure the Workshop map is available to the server.
- Run
maps *or a narrowermaps <partial name>query to see the identifier the server knows. - Use that exact identifier in
changelevelfor an immediate test. - If the test succeeds, put the same identifier on its own line in
tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt. - Verify the next map transition after saving the file.
Do not substitute a browser title, a local filename or a guessed abbreviation for the identifier returned by the server. Workshop naming can differ from the title players see, so the server’s own map listing is the authoritative check for your installation.

The console rejects changelevel
- Run
maps *and confirm that the requested map appears. - Check capitalization, underscores and prefixes against the listing.
- Remove
.bspif you included it. - For a Workshop map, use the exact Workshop identifier recognized by the server.
If the map is absent from the maps output, changing the command syntax will not solve the issue; the server does not currently recognize that map.
The file change appears to do nothing
- Confirm that you edited the TF2 server’s
tf/cfg/mapcycle.txt, not a similarly named file in another installation. - Check that the file was saved as plain text and retained the
.txtextension. - Make sure every line contains a valid map identifier and no
.bspsuffix. - Remember that the documented activation point is the next map change, not the instant the file is saved.
- Compare the file’s order with the order you observe at the next transition.
The rotation stops at a custom or Workshop map
First test that map on its own with changelevel. If it does not load individually, remove it from the rotation until the server recognizes it. If it does load individually, check that the mapcycle line exactly matches the identifier used in the successful command and that the file was saved in the correct path.
Players report that the current map did not restart
Editing a mapcycle is not the same as restarting the active round. The documented behavior is that the new list is read at the next map change. Use changelevel only when you intentionally want an immediate transition; otherwise allow the normal transition to occur and then inspect which map was selected.

Design a rotation players can follow
Because line order controls the default sequence, treat mapcycle.txt as an ordered schedule rather than an unordered collection. Put the maps you want to appear first at the top, then continue downward in the desired progression.
- Use one spelling of each map name consistently.
- Keep the file short enough that administrators can audit it quickly.
- Test every newly added map individually before putting it between established entries.
- After a change, verify the next transition rather than assuming the server has reloaded the file.
For a public server, announce an immediate changelevel before issuing it. For a private test server, keep a copy of the previous file so you can restore the last known sequence quickly.
Self-hosted server versus managed hosting
The commands and file format are the same, but the administration experience differs depending on who operates the machine. Choose the model based on how much control and maintenance you need.

A managed service can remove much of the machine-maintenance work, but it does not change the basic TF2 workflow: you still need a recognized map identifier, the correct mapcycle path or panel field, and a test at the next map transition. Before renting a server, verify that the plan includes both console commands and access to the map-cycle setting; without those controls, you may not be able to apply this procedure yourself.
