To change how much loot appears on a DayZ server, edit the mission’s db/types.xml, change the item’s nominal and min values together, optionally adjust lifetime, save the file, and restart the server. The Central Economy (CE) then works toward the new target over successive cycles; a restart does not instantly fill every location.

Your server may use a different mission-folder name for another map or configuration, but the important pattern is mission-folder/db/types.xml. Do not edit a similarly named file in a local game installation when you intend to change a hosted server. Use the copy belonging to the mission that the server actually starts.
How the Central Economy decides how much loot to keep
DayZ’s Central Economy tracks item classes across the playable map. Each <type> entry describes one class and includes limits that tell the CE what to keep in circulation.

nominal: the target count
nominal is the target number of that item across the map. It is not a promise that every restart will place exactly that number at once. The CE considers the current population, cleanup rules, spawn locations and its own processing cycle while moving toward the target.
min: the restock trigger
min is the threshold that prompts the CE to queue more of the item. When the counted amount falls below min, the economy starts working toward nominal. Keep min lower than nominal; setting them equal removes the intended gap between a trigger and a target.
Why changing only one value causes confusion
Raising nominal without raising min is the most common configuration mistake. The server may accept the larger target, yet it can wait until the old, lower threshold is reached before requesting another restock. In practice, that means the map can remain below the new target for a long time, especially if players have not removed enough of the item to cross the old trigger.
A community rule of thumb is to keep min near two-thirds of nominal. This is not an official Bohemia Interactive value; treat it as a starting point and tune it for your server’s population and play style.

types.xml fields that affect loot quantity and persistence

The names used by category, usage, tag and value come from cfglimitsdefinition.xml or, where present, cfglimitsdefinitionuser.xml. Changing a name to an arbitrary label can stop the entry from behaving as intended even if the XML remains well formed.
How to change loot quantity DayZ server settings
- Stop or suspend the server before editing. Use your host’s stop control or administrative procedure so the running process cannot overwrite the file while you save it.
- Create a backup. Download or copy the current
types.xmland record the original values for every entry you plan to change. A backup gives you a direct rollback if the server fails to load the economy. - Open the active mission file. Navigate to
mission-folder/db/types.xml, not a similarly named template or local installation file. - Find the item entry. Search for the exact class name in the opening
<type name="...">element. Search is safer than scrolling because a large file can contain thousands of entries. - Raise or lower the target. Change the value in
nominalto the desired map-wide target. Use a whole number appropriate for the size and activity of your server. - Change the trigger at the same time. Set
minbelow the newnominal. If you are reducing the target, reduce both values rather than leaving a high trigger that causes repeated restock attempts. - Adjust persistence only when needed. Change
lifetimeif the problem is abandoned items disappearing too quickly or remaining too long. Do not use lifetime as a substitute for a higher target. - Save valid XML. Preserve the existing element structure, quotation marks and closing tags. Edit attribute values rather than deleting unrelated attributes.
- Start or restart the server. The CE fills gradually, so inspect the result after enough economy cycles have run rather than expecting the full target immediately after boot.
- Observe and tune one item at a time. Record the old and new values, watch several cycles, then make a small follow-up adjustment if the result is too sparse or too abundant.
A safe way to choose nominal and min
Use the relationship between the two values rather than treating them as independent sliders. The following is an illustrative calculation, not a required setting:

The numbers above demonstrate the relationship only. They are not a universal balance recommendation. A high target can make an item common on a low-population server and still feel scarce on a busy one because players remove it faster than the CE replaces it.
If you want a modest increase, make a modest change and monitor it. Large jumps make it harder to identify whether the issue is the target, spawn locations, item cleanup, or a separate economy rule.

DayZ types.xml lifetime and restock behavior
Using lifetime for abandoned loot
lifetime is the cleanup or persistence period for an untouched item. One documented example is 10800, which is three hours. Increasing it can keep an item in the world longer after it has been dropped or left behind; decreasing it lets cleanup happen sooner. The field changes persistence, not the desired number of copies.
A community explanation says that interacting with an item resets its lifetime timer, but that behavior is reported with low confidence. Test it on the game version and configuration you run instead of relying on the claim for a critical economy design.

Sources disagree about what a zero restock value means. One description says the item can respawn as soon as its count falls below min; another says zero waits for the next CE cycle. A forum explanation from roughly 2023-era discussions describes zero as bulk respawning and positive values as a per-item wait. Because these accounts conflict and the older forum explanation may no longer match current behavior, treat restock="0" as unresolved.
If you change restock, change only one item first, note the server version and restart time, and observe multiple cycles. Do not assume that setting zero guarantees an immediate spawn.

How to increase loot DayZ server without breaking spawn rules
Quantity limits do not operate in isolation. The CE also uses the item’s category, usage flags, tags, value and spawn locations. Before changing those fields, verify that their names exist in cfglimitsdefinition.xml or cfglimitsdefinitionuser.xml. A misspelled or undefined name can prevent the entry from participating in the intended economy group.
The file economy.xml identifies the economy files used by the mission, including types.xml and events.xml. If your changes appear to do nothing, confirm that the active economy configuration points to the files you edited and that the server is starting the mission folder you inspected.
Do not add or override modded entries casually. Mod handling can involve a separate file or an override arrangement, and the correct method depends on the mod and server setup. Keep the vanilla entry intact until you have confirmed the mod’s documented loading method, then make one controlled change and test it.
DayZ loot not respawning: a diagnostic sequence
1. Confirm the file and mission
- Check that the edited file is under the mission’s
dbdirectory. - Compare the mission name in the server startup configuration with the folder containing your edited file.
- Verify that the server was restarted after the file was saved.
2. Check the pair of limits
- Make sure
nominalis a valid whole number. - Make sure
minis lower thannominal. - If you raised only
nominal, raiseminas well and wait for CE cycles.
3. Allow for gradual filling
The economy does not necessarily place the full target immediately after a restart. A server can be using the new values correctly while the map is still below its eventual target. Observe the same locations over several cycles and record whether the count trends upward.
4. Inspect persistence and cleanup
If items vanish before players can find them, review lifetime. If dropped items remain and appear to suppress new spawns, the map may still be counting those copies toward the target. Raising nominal alone will not force a new item into a location that is occupied or restricted by another rule.
5. Verify classification names
Compare category, usage, tag and value with the definitions files. Keep the original names while troubleshooting; changing several classifications at once makes it difficult to identify the cause.

If the limits are correct but replacement timing is unexpected, isolate the restock value as the variable. Because zero has conflicting descriptions, test it rather than assuming a specific delay.
7. Roll back cleanly
If the server reports an XML error, fails to start the economy or produces a clearly abnormal result, stop it, restore the backup, and restart. Reapply one change at a time after the original configuration is confirmed to work.
Common mistakes when changing loot
- Editing the wrong copy: A local mission file does not change a hosted server’s active mission.
- Changing
nominalalone: The oldmincan delay the first restock. - Expecting instant results: CE processing is gradual rather than an immediate map refill.
- Using lifetime to solve scarcity: Persistence affects cleanup time, not the map-wide target.
- Inventing category or usage names: These names must be defined in the limits files.
- Changing many entries at once: Broad edits hide which value caused an unexpected result.
- Assuming zero restock is universal: Published explanations conflict, so verify on your own version.
- Skipping a backup: Without the original file, recovery from a syntax or balance error is slower.
Practical change checklist
- Identify the active mission folder and its
db/types.xml. - Back up the file and record original values.
- Locate the exact
<type>entry. - Set
nominalto the desired target. - Set
minbelow that target in the same edit. - Change
lifetimeonly when cleanup persistence is the goal. - Leave
restockunchanged until you can test its behavior. - Keep classification names consistent with the limits-definition files.
- Save valid XML, restart the server and allow several CE cycles.
- Document the result and roll back from the backup if the economy behaves abnormally.
What the settings can and cannot guarantee
Changing types.xml changes the CE’s desired counts and related timing rules. It does not guarantee that every settlement, military site or building receives a copy, because the final result also depends on valid spawn locations, usage flags, cleanup state and the economy’s processing cycle. It also cannot make a quantity-based item full by changing only nominal; use quantmin and quantmax for fill percentages where those attributes apply.
There is no single official public schema reference covering every current types.xml behavior, and most available explanations come from hosting providers or community discussions. Treat disputed details—especially restock="0" and lifetime-reset behavior—as version-sensitive and confirm them in a controlled test on the server you operate.
