Change loot priority by editing the item’s <cost> value in the active mission’s db/types.xml. A higher cost is documented as a higher Central Economy priority during respawn and cleanup. Edit the exact item entry, keep the XML valid, restart or reload the correct server instance, and wait for subsequent economy cycles. Changing nominal changes how many copies the economy targets; it does not change priority.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
This guide separates priority from abundance, placement, persistence and item fill so you can test one behavior at a time. The same method applies whether you manage files directly or use a host panel that exposes the mission configuration.

What “loot priority” means in DayZ
DayZ’s Central Economy is a server-side system that decides when item definitions should be replenished and cleaned up. The priority weight for an item is the value inside its <cost> element in types.xml. The reference configuration describes larger cost values as higher priority. Priority is therefore a relative tuning control: it affects which definitions the economy gives attention to during its work, but it does not directly set the number of copies, the locations where they may appear, or the amount inside a magazine or bottle.
Because the economy runs on the server, players do not download your XML files and cannot inspect Central Economy state directly from the client. They only see the eventual results in the world. A correct edit may therefore take more than a restart to become obvious: existing item counts, cleanup rules, replenishment thresholds and restock delays all influence when the next visible change occurs.

Which file to edit
The active file is the types.xml inside the mission selected by your server’s serverDZ.cfg. Common mission directories include mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/, dayzOffline.enoch/ and dayzOffline.sakhal/, but the actual path depends on the map, host and installation. Do not assume that a similarly named mission folder is active.
Private-console hosting rules identify types.xml as one of the variables operators may change. A host panel may expose the file through a configuration editor rather than ordinary file transfer. Use the host’s supported maintenance mode when available; editing a live file can leave a partial or unsaved configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteBefore you edit: identify the server and make a rollback point
- Write down the map, server instance and mission name shown in
serverDZ.cfg. This prevents an edit to a staging, test or inactive mission. - Use the host’s stop or maintenance control before opening the file. If the panel provides an XML editor, save through that editor rather than mixing it with a separate upload process.
- Copy the complete mission folder, or at minimum the original
db/types.xml, to a dated backup location. Keep the original cost value in your notes. - Decide what you are testing: priority, target abundance, replenishment threshold, delay, persistence, fill percentage or placement. Each outcome has a different field.
This preparation matters because a restart only loads whatever file belongs to that instance. A perfectly edited file has no effect if the running server points to another mission directory.
Safe procedure for changing one item’s priority
- Stop the server or enter maintenance mode. This prevents the process from reading the file while you are saving it and gives you a consistent restart point.
- Back up the mission folder. Keep an untouched copy of
types.xmland note the date, map and server instance. A backup lets you restore a known-good economy if the server rejects the file. - Confirm the active mission. Open
serverDZ.cfg, identify the mission setting, and follow that exact mission path todb/types.xml. If you administer more than one instance, verify the instance-specific directory as well. - Find the exact class name. Search for an entry such as
<type name='AK74'>. Class names are exact identifiers; editing a similarly named entry, a display name or a comment will not affect the intended item. - Edit only
<cost>for the priority test. Leavenominal, min, lifetime, restock, flags and location tags unchanged during the first test. Isolating one variable makes the result interpretable. - Validate the XML before saving. Keep one opening and closing
<type>element, retain every required child element, and ensure thatnominalis greater than or equal tomin. Do not remove attributes from the flags element or invent category, usage or value names. - Save, restart or reload, then observe later cycles. Use the host panel’s restart or reload control for the same server instance you edited. A restart applies the file, but it does not guarantee an immediate spawn: current counts, threshold checks and restock timing still govern when the economy acts.
Worked XML example
This entry illustrates where the priority value belongs. In a test, change only the number between <cost> and </cost>; keep the surrounding definition intact.
<type name="AK74">
<nominal>6</nominal>
<lifetime>28800</lifetime>
<restock>0</restock>
<min>4</min>
<quantmin>-1</quantmin>
<quantmax>-1</quantmax>
<cost>100</cost>
<flags count_in_cargo="0" count_in_hoarder="0" count_in_map="1" count_in_player="0" crafted="0" deloot="0"/>
<category name="weapons"/>
<usage name="Military"/>
<value name="Tier3"/>
</type>
The number 100 is only an example, not a universal recommendation. No single cost is correct for every item, map, player population or game build. Treat cost as a relative value and compare the item with other definitions on the same server.
What each relevant XML field controls
| Element or attribute | What it controls | What it does not control |
|---|---|---|
cost |
Central Economy priority weight used during respawn and cleanup; higher documented values receive higher priority. | It does not set a target item count or override location classifications. |
nominal |
The target number of copies the economy tries to maintain on the map. | It does not raise or lower priority. |
min |
The count at or below which the economy attempts replenishment. | It does not specify how quickly a replacement appears. |
lifetime |
How many seconds an untouched item remains before cleanup. | It does not determine where the item can spawn. |
restock |
The minimum delay before a replacement spawn attempt. | It does not change the quantity inside an item. |
quantmin and quantmax |
The percentage fill range for quantity-bearing items, such as magazines and bottles. | They do not change the number of item instances. |
category, usage and value |
Classification and location constraints used by the economy’s limits definitions. | They do not act as priority weights. |
flags |
Whether items in cargo, hoarders, the map, players, crafted containers or dynamic-event loot count toward the economy’s total. | They do not replace the cost value. |
For example, raising nominal can make an item more abundant without making it a higher-priority definition. Raising quantmax can make a magazine spawn with more ammunition without creating additional magazines. Keeping these jobs separate prevents a quantity change from being mistaken for a priority change.

How the economy timing affects what you see
The Central Economy evaluates definitions against their current counts and rules. If counted objects already meet the target, increasing cost will not necessarily create another object immediately. If the count has not reached the replenishment threshold, the economy may wait. The restock value can impose an additional minimum delay before another spawn attempt, while lifetime controls how long an untouched object remains before cleanup.
The flags attributes determine which places contribute to the count. An item in a player inventory, cargo or a hoarder may count differently from one lying on the map, depending on the flags in that definition. Consequently, a player may see no new ground loot even though the economy considers the nominal amount satisfied elsewhere.
Use several later economy cycles as your observation window. A restart confirms that the server loaded the file; it does not force every type to respawn. Record the restart time, the edited cost and the item count you observe so that a delayed result is not confused with a failed edit.
Choosing the right tuning strategy
Decide which outcome you actually want before editing. Use the following axes independently rather than changing several fields at once.
| Desired outcome | Primary field | Related checks |
|---|---|---|
| Give an item more attention during economy processing | cost |
Compare the relative value with other items and wait for later cycles. |
| Increase the number the map should maintain | nominal |
Check min, existing counts and valid spawn classifications. |
| Start replenishment at a different remaining count | min |
Keep nominal at least as large as min. |
| Change the minimum delay before another attempt | restock |
Allow for the delay after a restart or cleanup event. |
| Keep untouched loot longer or clean it sooner | lifetime |
Remember that the setting applies to untouched items. |
| Change ammunition or liquid fill | quantmin/quantmax |
Use percentages; this changes contents, not item count. |
| Move an item into or out of certain locations | category, usage, value |
Use names supported by the server’s limits definitions. |
A practical priority test is to choose one item, record its current cost and nearby definitions, change only that cost, and monitor several economy cycles. Once the priority behavior is understood, make a separate change for abundance, placement or persistence. This staged approach avoids attributing a result to the wrong field.
Why changing nominal did not change priority
Nominal is a target quantity, not a scheduling weight. Increasing it tells the economy to maintain more copies, so you may eventually see more of the item, but it does not tell the economy to prioritize that definition over another during respawn or cleanup. Conversely, reducing nominal can lower the eventual population while leaving the item’s priority unchanged.

If the goal is priority, restore unrelated quantity edits and change cost in the exact type entry. If the goal is simply more or fewer copies, use nominal and, where appropriate, min, lifetime and restock instead. A visible increase after a nominal edit is evidence of a quantity change, not proof that priority changed.
Location, quantity and cleanup pitfalls
The item appears in the wrong places
Cost does not override location rules. Check the entry’s category, usage and value names against the corresponding limits definitions. A valid priority value cannot make a military-only item appear in residential locations if its classifications still restrict it.
There are too few or too many copies
Inspect nominal, min, lifetime and restock. Existing items may still count according to the entry’s flags, and untouched items may remain until their lifetime expires. Do not use cost as a substitute for a target-count adjustment.
Magazines or bottles are incorrectly filled
Use quantmin and quantmax for the fill percentage range. These fields affect the amount inside a quantity-bearing object; they do not increase the number of objects spawned.
The server rejects the configuration
Restore the backup, then inspect the edited block for a missing closing tag, a malformed attribute, an invalid classification name or a value that violates the file’s expected structure. Confirm that nominal is not below min. Make one small correction at a time and restart only after the file is well formed.
Nothing changes after a restart
First verify that the restart affected the same instance whose mission you edited. Then check the exact class-name spelling, confirm there is only one relevant entry, and compare the saved file with the copy on the host. If those checks pass, wait for economy cycles and review counts, thresholds, restock delay, lifetime and flags. A lack of an immediate spawn is not by itself evidence that the cost edit was ignored.

Modded items and updates
For a modded class, follow the mod’s supported economy-file pattern. Where the mod documents a separate definition file, register that file through cfgeconomycore.xml instead of replacing the vanilla file unnecessarily. Keeping custom definitions separate reduces the chance that a game or mod update will overwrite your edits and makes rollback easier.
If an update did overwrite a change, compare the current registered file with your backup, confirm that the class name still exists, and reapply the cost change in the supported file. A class renamed or removed by the mod cannot be tuned through an obsolete entry. Recheck registration after updates because an unregistered custom file is never read by the active economy.
Testing, documentation and rollback
Keep a small change log for each test: date, map, server instance, class name, old cost, new cost and the intended outcome. Note whether you also changed nominal, min, restock, lifetime, flags or location tags. If a result is unexpected, restore the last known-good file, restart, and then reintroduce one change at a time. This is faster than trying to diagnose several simultaneous edits.
When comparing two cost values, compare them with definitions serving a similar purpose on the same server. The setting is a relative weight, not a cross-server scale. A value that produces useful behavior on one map or population may not produce the same balance on another version. Validate the final behavior on the server build and map your players actually use.
Testing and verification checklist
- Confirm the map and active mission in
serverDZ.cfg. - Confirm the edited entry’s exact class name and its single
<cost>element. - Record the old and new cost, the server restart time and the intended test outcome.
- Check that the XML is well formed and that
nominalis greater than or equal tomin. - Leave unrelated fields unchanged for the first priority test.
- Restart or reload the correct server instance through the host panel.
- Allow later Central Economy cycles; do not judge the result from one immediate loot check.
- If placement is wrong, inspect classification tags and limits definitions rather than increasing cost.
- If abundance is wrong, inspect nominal, min, lifetime and restock rather than cost.
- For modded content, verify the file is registered through the documented
cfgeconomycore.xmlpattern and was not replaced by an update. - If the server fails to load, restore the backup before making another experiment.
Limits of what a cost value can tell you
There is no established universal numeric cost recommendation that applies to every item, map, player population or current game build. A value that works on one server is not a guaranteed balance point on another. The useful comparison is relative: record the values already used by similar definitions, change one item, and observe the resulting economy behavior on the target server version.
Also distinguish configuration application from gameplay visibility. A successful restart proves that the server loaded the file; it does not prove that the item will spawn immediately. Thresholds, existing counted objects, restock delays, cleanup lifetimes and location constraints may all postpone or redirect what players see.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Which value changes loot priority in DayZ?
Edit the item’s <cost> value in the active mission’s db/types.xml. The documented behavior treats higher values as higher Central Economy priority during respawn and cleanup.
Why did changing nominal not make the item higher priority?
nominal is the target number of copies, not a priority weight. Use cost for priority; use nominal and min for abundance and replenishment thresholds.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does a restart make the changed item spawn immediately?
No. A restart loads the file, but existing counts, the min threshold, restock delay, lifetime, flags and location classifications still determine when a visible spawn occurs.
Where is the correct types.xml file?
Use the mission selected by serverDZ.cfg, then open that mission’s db/types.xml. Common folders include mpmissions/dayzOffline.chernarusplus/, dayzOffline.enoch/ and dayzOffline.sakhal/, but your host path may differ.
Can cost force an item to spawn in a different location?
No. Check the valid category, usage and value names and the corresponding limits definitions. Cost changes priority, not location constraints.
How do I keep a mod update from erasing the change?
Use the mod’s supported separate economy file when provided and register it through cfgeconomycore.xml. Avoid replacing the vanilla file unnecessarily, and keep a dated backup and change log.
