To make Windows 11 Live Captions easier to read, open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Captions. Choose a built-in style, check the preview, then select Edit to customize the selected style. You can also reach the same caption settings from an open Live Captions window.
Change the Live Captions style in Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Captions.
- Under Caption style, open the menu and choose a built-in style. Use the preview to see how it looks.
- To customize the selected style, choose Edit and adjust the options available on your Windows build.
Windows’ default built-in style uses colors suited to your device’s light or dark mode. For other styles, consider how the text and background contrast with the content behind or around the captions. Microsoft documents the preset, preview, and Edit workflow, but does not list every edit field in its current instructions, so the available options may vary. Microsoft’s caption settings guide explains the style-selection workflow.

Open caption styling from Live Captions
If Live Captions is already open, select its Settings button, choose Preferences, then select Caption style. Windows opens the Accessibility settings for Captions, where you can choose a preset or edit it. Microsoft’s Live Captions guide documents this route.
Style, position, and window size are different controls
Caption style changes their visual appearance. Position and size affect where the Live Captions window sits and how many lines it can show; changing them does not edit the style.

Move or dock the captions
In the Live Captions window, open Settings > Position. Choose a docked position above or below the screen, where captions use reserved desktop space, or choose a floating overlay that you can reposition. Floating placement can help keep captions from covering important content in another app.
Show more lines
Resize the Live Captions window with a mouse, touch, or keyboard to fit more text lines. This changes the window dimensions, not the caption colors or other style settings. Microsoft describes these position and resizing controls in its Live Captions guide.

Turn on Live Captions and complete first-time setup
Live Captions is available in Windows 11, version 22H2 and later. You can turn it on from Quick Settings, press Windows key + Ctrl + L, open Start > All apps > Accessibility > Live captions, or go to Settings > Accessibility > Captions. The first time you enable it, Windows asks for consent to process voice data on the device and prompts you to download language files for on-device speech recognition.
Microsoft says Live Captions processes audio and generates captions on the device, and that audio, voice data, and captions are not sent to Microsoft or the cloud; it also says generated captions are not stored on the device or in the cloud. This describes the documented handling of Live Captions audio and captions, not every data flow in Windows. See Microsoft’s Live Captions documentation for the feature’s setup and privacy details.
