To change Live Activities, open Settings > Apps, select the app that is showing the activity, then tap Live Activities. Turn the switch off to stop that app’s Live Activity, or turn it on to allow updates again. The control is app-specific: iPhone does not provide one documented master switch that changes every app at once.
Live Activities can appear on the Lock Screen and, on supported iPhone models while the phone is unlocked, in the Dynamic Island. The Settings switch controls whether an app can provide the activity; taps, swipes and touches on the Dynamic Island only change how an activity is displayed.

What Live Activities are and where they appear
Live Activities are short, ongoing updates from an app. Common examples include turn-by-turn directions in Maps, a live sports score and the status of a food-delivery order. Instead of opening the app repeatedly, you can see the current state from the iPhone Lock Screen.
On an iPhone model that supports the Dynamic Island, an active Live Activity can also appear there while the iPhone is unlocked, either on the Home Screen or over another open app. The exact presentation depends on the app and the activity. Apple’s guidance does not establish a universal model-and-iOS compatibility list, so treat Dynamic Island support as a requirement for the particular iPhone you are using rather than assuming every iPhone has it.

There are two different actions people often call “changing Live Activities”:
- Changing an app’s permission: use Settings to allow or stop that app from presenting Live Activities.
- Interacting with an activity already on screen: use the Lock Screen or Dynamic Island controls to view, expand or switch activities without changing the app’s permission.
Change Live Activities for a specific app
Use this route when one app’s updates are unwanted, or when you want an app to show its ongoing status again.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Apps.
- Scroll to and select the app whose activity you want to control.
- Tap Live Activities.
- Turn the Live Activities switch on or off.
If you turn the switch off, that app’s Live Activity is no longer permitted to present updates through the iPhone’s Live Activities interface. Turning it on restores permission for the app to use Live Activities when the app creates a supported activity.

If you cannot find the Live Activities row
Not every app has a Live Activities setting. Apple’s general guidance specifically notes that the option is app-dependent. If the row is absent after you open the app’s page in Settings, the documented route does not provide a switch for that app. Do not substitute a general Lock Screen notification setting and assume it is a universal Live Activities control; the available guidance does not establish that behavior.
What turning the switch off changes
The switch determines whether the selected app can use Live Activities. It is not the same as deleting the app, signing out, cancelling an order or stopping an event inside the app.
- For an app that provides directions, the setting concerns the Live Activity presentation of those directions.
- For a sports app, it concerns the live update presentation, while the app may offer additional controls for teams or individual games.
- For a delivery app, it concerns the order-status activity shown on the Lock Screen.
Because Live Activities are created by individual apps, the switch may have no visible effect until that app starts an active event. Likewise, turning the switch on does not create an activity by itself; the app must have an eligible, ongoing update to display.

Settings controls an app’s permission. Once an activity is visible, the controls differ by location.

On the Lock Screen
The Lock Screen is where Live Activities are designed to provide at-a-glance updates. You can read the information presented by the app without opening it. The available guidance identifies Maps directions, sports updates and food-delivery progress as examples of the kinds of information that may appear.
Apple documents a specific per-game control for Apple Sports: swipe left on that game’s Lock Screen Live Activity to stop alerts for the single game. That action is an Apple Sports feature, not a general rule for every app. Do not assume that swiping left on another app’s activity will offer the same command.
In the Dynamic Island
When a supported iPhone is unlocked and an activity is active in the Dynamic Island, Apple documents these display gestures:
- Touch and hold: expand the activity to see more information.
- Swipe the expanded activity up: collapse it again.
- Tap an activity: switch between two activities when two are available.
These gestures change the view of the activity. They do not turn Live Activities off for the app. To change permission, return to Settings > Apps > [app] > Live Activities.

Apple Sports has extra Live Activities controls
Apple Sports provides controls beyond the basic app-level switch. Open Settings > Apps > Sports > Live Activities to manage Live Activities for individual teams and to change the update rate.
This means Apple Sports can be more selective than a simple on-or-off choice for the whole app. You can decide which followed teams receive Live Activity treatment and how frequently updates are refreshed, subject to the options Apple Sports presents on your iPhone.
Apple Sports also provides a game-level action in the app itself. Its user guide says you can stop alerts for one game by swiping left on that game’s Live Activity on the Lock Screen or by using the game card in the Sports app. A game-level action affects that game; it should not be interpreted as turning off every team or every Sports Live Activity.

Sports features can vary by country or region. If a team, update-rate choice or other Sports control is not available in your location, the absence is not evidence that the general iPhone setting is broken.

Why you may still see, or stop seeing, an activity
The activity is still visible immediately after you changed the switch
The Settings control is an app permission, while an activity already on screen is a current display. Return to the app-specific Live Activities page and confirm the switch is in the intended position. Then allow the activity to end or follow the app’s own control for that activity. The documented guidance does not promise an instant, universal dismissal command for every app.
The app appears in Settings but has no Live Activities option
Apple does not require every app to expose this setting. Check the app’s own interface for activity-specific controls. Apple Sports, for example, has team, update-rate and individual-game controls. Do not infer that another app has the same choices.
Live Activities appear on the Lock Screen but not in the Dynamic Island
Lock Screen Live Activities and Dynamic Island presentation are related but not identical displays. Dynamic Island behavior requires a supported iPhone model and is documented for use while the iPhone is unlocked. The available Apple guidance does not provide a complete compatibility matrix, so a Lock Screen activity alone does not establish that the iPhone supports Dynamic Island presentation.
You expected one switch for every app
The documented general route is per app. Open each relevant app under Settings > Apps and check its Live Activities page. A single global off switch is not established by the cited Apple guidance.
A practical way to choose the right change
- Identify the source. Read the activity to determine whether it comes from Maps, Sports, a delivery service or another app.
- Decide whether you want permission or presentation changed. If you want to stop that app from using Live Activities, use Settings. If you only want to inspect or collapse what is currently shown in the Dynamic Island, use the documented gesture.
- Check for app-specific controls. Apple Sports can target teams, update rates and individual games; other apps may not expose equivalent controls.
- Check the display location. Lock Screen behavior is distinct from Dynamic Island behavior, and Dynamic Island requires a supported model while unlocked.
Limits of the documented controls
The available Apple instructions establish an app-specific Live Activities setting, not a universal control that applies to every app. They also do not establish that notification previews, general Lock Screen access settings or another system-wide notification switch universally disables Live Activities.
That distinction matters when troubleshooting. If your goal is to stop one app’s ongoing card, start with that app’s Live Activities page. If your goal is to stop one Apple Sports game, use the Sports-specific game control. If your goal is simply to see more or less information in the Dynamic Island, use touch and hold, swipe up or tap as appropriate.
