Linux records a user owner, a group owner, and permission bits on each file. The bits describe read, write, and execute access for three classes: the owner, members of the file’s group, and everyone else. Use the command for the attribute that needs changing:
| Command | What it changes | Example |
|---|---|---|
chmod |
Read, write, and execute permission bits | chmod 644 foo |
chown |
The user owner, and optionally the group | chown user:group foo |
chgrp |
The group owner only | chgrp group foo |
If an application reports “Permission denied,” do not assume that the mode is the problem. The owner or group may be wrong even when the permission bits look suitable, and correct ownership does not help if the relevant class lacks the necessary bits.

Check the file and your intended change first
Before changing anything, identify the exact file or directory and decide who needs access and what kind of access they need. A change that is appropriate for one configuration file may be unsafe for a whole application tree.
- For a permissions change, decide which of the owner, group, and others should be able to read, write, or execute.
- For an ownership change, identify the intended user and, if needed, the intended group.
- For a directory-wide change, check that the target is the directory you mean and that affecting every item below it is intentional.
- If the path might be a symbolic link, decide whether you mean the link itself or the file it points to; the ownership commands can treat those differently.
On systems with the usual GNU tools, ls -l path is a convenient way to inspect a path’s displayed permission string and owner and group names. For example, a mode displayed as -rw-r--r-- means the owner has read and write, while the group and others have read. The leading character distinguishes a regular file from a directory or another file type; it is not one of the three permission classes.

chmod changes permission bits without changing the file’s user or group owner. It supports numeric modes, which set the permissions by value, and symbolic modes, which specify the classes and operations more directly.
Use a numeric mode when you know the complete result
A numeric mode assigns a value to each permission class in owner, group, others order. Read is 4, write is 2, and execute is 1; add the values for the permissions wanted by each class. Thus chmod 644 foo gives the owner read and write (4 + 2), and gives the group and others read (4 each). It does not make foo executable.
chmod 755 foo gives the owner read, write, and execute (4 + 2 + 1), and gives the group and others read and execute (4 + 1). This is why 644 is commonly suitable for a non-executable document and 755 for an executable file or a directory that should be traversable. Choose based on the file’s role rather than applying one mode indiscriminately.
chmod 644 foo
chmod 755 program
A numeric mode specifies the resulting permission combination for the classes represented by the mode. Use it when you want to set a known result rather than make a small adjustment to existing permissions.

Use symbolic mode to add, remove, or set selected permissions
Symbolic mode names the classes and permissions instead of requiring you to calculate each digit. The class letters are u for owner, g for group, o for others, and a for all three. The operators are + to add permissions, - to remove them, and = to set the selected class to exactly the listed permissions.
chmod a=r,u+w foo
In this example, a=r sets all three classes to read permission, then u+w adds write permission for the owner. The result is that the owner can read and write, while group and others can read. Symbolic mode is useful when the goal is to describe a targeted change, but pay attention to =: it replaces the permissions for the classes it names rather than merely adding the listed bit.
Change the user owner or group owner
Use chown to change the user owner. Add a colon and a group name when you also want to set the group. A leading colon with a group changes only the group, similarly to chgrp.
chown user foo
chown user:group foo
chown :group foo
chown user foomakesuserthe owner and leaves the group unchanged in GNUchown.chown user:group foosets both the user owner and group owner explicitly.chown :group foochanges only the group owner.
On GNU chown, a trailing colon with no group, as in chown user: foo, sets the user owner and sets the group to that user’s login group. This syntax is not consistent across every implementation: Ubuntu’s newer default chown has been reported to leave the group unchanged for USER:. If both values matter, use an explicit USER:GROUP form instead.
To change only the group, you can also use chgrp:
chgrp group foo
Its general form is chgrp [option]... {group | --reference=ref_file} file.... The --reference=ref_file form takes the group from a reference file rather than requiring a group name. Use it only when matching that reference file’s group is the intended result.
Know whether you have permission to make the ownership change
Changing a file’s user owner is restricted to root. A regular user can change a file’s group only to a group that user belongs to. If the command fails, check both the requested change and your authority to make it; changing the mode with chmod does not grant the ability to change the owner.

Where administrative access is available, a root-run command can perform an owner change, for example:
sudo chown user:group foo
sudo is shown here as a common way to request an administrative command, not as a guarantee that it is installed or that your account is authorized to use it. If you do not have root access, ask an administrator to make the owner change. A group-only change may be possible without root if the requested group is one of your own groups.

Add -R when a command should recurse through a directory’s contents. A recursive command is not just a shortcut for the top-level directory: it affects the items underneath it too. Confirm the path and intended scope before running it.
chgrp -hR staff /u
This is an example of recursive chgrp usage documented in the GNU Coreutils manual. For your own task, replace the example group and path with the intended values. Recursive operations involving symbolic links also require care: GNU chgrp documents options including -H and --no-dereference, which changes how links are handled.
Avoid using chmod -R 755 directory as a blanket repair. It makes every regular file executable as well as giving directories execute permission. Documents and other non-executable files should not automatically receive an execute bit just because directories need one for traversal.
For a tree where the goal is to give all classes read and write access, while adding execute only to directories and files that were already executable, GNU Coreutils documents this form:

chmod -R a=,+rwX directory
The capital X is the important distinction: it adds execute conditionally for directories or files that already had execute permission, rather than making every ordinary file executable. This is still a broad permission change; use it only if giving read and write access to all classes throughout that tree is genuinely intended.
Handle symbolic links explicitly
A symbolic link is a path that points to another file. By default, chown on a symbolic link changes the ownership of the target. If you need to change the link’s own ownership instead, use -h:
chown -h user:group linkname
For chgrp, use --no-dereference when the intended object is the link itself rather than its target:
chgrp --no-dereference group linkname
Check the path before running either command: changing a link’s owner or group is not the same operation as changing the owner or group of the file it points to.
Set up a shared directory without making every file executable
For a shared directory, a group change alone may not be enough: members need appropriate permissions, and new files need the intended group behavior. The setgid bit on a directory can make new files inherit the directory’s group. The documented example is:
chmod 2775 /srv/teamwork
Here, the leading 2 sets the directory’s setgid bit, while 775 gives the owner and group read, write, and execute, and others read and execute. The inherited-group behavior addresses which group new files receive; it does not by itself grant every user access. The permission bits still determine what each class can do.
Best Value
When access must be granted to particular users beyond the owner/group/others classes, Linux access control lists (ACLs) provide a more specific mechanism. The getfacl command reads ACLs and setfacl changes them. A shared-project setup can combine ownership, a setgid directory, and default ACLs, but ACL rules add another access layer: inspect the existing ACL before changing it and ensure that the intended users, files, and directories are covered.
Troubleshoot “Permission denied” systematically
Separate the questions of who owns the path and what permissions apply. A plausible permission string does not prove that the process needing access belongs to the class receiving those permissions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the exact path. Check whether the failing operation targets a file, a directory, or a symbolic link. For a link, determine whether the target or the link itself is relevant.
- Check ownership. Compare the file’s user and group with the user or service that needs access. If the owner is wrong, changing permission bits will not correct that ownership mismatch.
- Check the permission class. Work out whether the accessing account relies on owner, group, or others permissions, then check the needed read, write, or execute bit for that class.
- For a directory, check traversal. The execute bit on a directory is needed to traverse it. A user who can read a file may still be unable to reach it through a directory they cannot traverse.
- Make the narrowest justified change. Use
chmodfor the needed bits, chownfor an owner or explicit owner-and-group correction, orchgrpfor a group-only correction. Avoid recursive changes unless the problem and desired fix apply to the full tree.
One 2026 guide notes that in web-server and Docker deployment cases, many “Permission denied” problems it encountered stemmed from wrong ownership rather than wrong permission bits. Treat that as a useful diagnostic possibility, not a universal explanation: inspect the actual path, owner, group, and permissions for the process that fails.
Account for the Ubuntu chown implementation
Ubuntu 25.10 and newer ship the Rust-based uutils chown as the default, according to a 2026 tutorial. That tutorial reports that on Ubuntu 26.04, chown USER: FILE changed the user owner but left the group unchanged; it also reports that GNU chown remains available as gnuchown. Because this behavior was reported in a single tutorial, verify what your system does rather than assuming all Ubuntu installations behave identically.
For portable intent, name the group explicitly when you mean to set it:
chown USER:GROUP FILE
If you specifically need GNU chown on a system where it is available under that name, invoke gnuchown and check the local manual for its options. Do not assume that the behavior of a command with the same name is identical across distributions or implementations.
