Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOn a computer, open your spreadsheet and go to File > Settings > Calculation. Choose Automatic or Manual, then select Save settings. These settings apply to the entire spreadsheet, so they affect collaborators too. Use the separate iterative-calculation control when a formula relies on a circular reference.
How do I change calculation settings in Google Sheets?
- Open the spreadsheet in Google Sheets on a computer.
- Select File > Settings > Calculation.
- Under Calculation Mode, choose Automatic or Manual.
- Select Save settings to apply the change.
Calculation settings are spreadsheet-wide, not personal preferences: changing them affects everyone working in that file. Manual calculation is available to spreadsheet editors and is not available in the mobile app. See Google’s calculation settings help for the current interface details.

Automatic or Manual: which calculation mode should I use?
| Mode | When results recalculate | Workflow trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | As you make spreadsheet changes. | Results update during your work, without a separate calculation step. |
| Manual | When an editor selects Calculate at the top of the screen. | You decide when to refresh calculations, but values can remain out of date until you calculate them. |
There is no universally best mode: choose based on whether you need results to update as you work or prefer to trigger calculation yourself. If you use Manual, calculate before relying on results after making changes.
How do I turn on iterative calculation?
Iterative calculation allows Sheets to handle formulas that refer back to themselves, directly or through other cells. In File > Settings > Calculation, enable Iterative calculation, then set the maximum number of iterations and the convergence threshold for your formula. Save the settings.

What the two controls do
- Maximum iterations sets the upper limit on how many calculation rounds a circular reference can run.
- Convergence threshold lets Sheets stop earlier when successive results differ by less than the threshold.
The right values depend on the formula and the output you need. Google’s December 6, 2016 announcement explains the purpose of both controls; because that announcement is historical, use the current Calculation settings panel for the available controls rather than assuming a particular default. Validate the resulting values for your spreadsheet instead of choosing a number by rule of thumb.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is my formula not recalculating?
First check whether the spreadsheet is set to Manual. In that mode, an editor must select Calculate for results to update. If the value comes from an external-data function, its refresh schedule may be longer than an ordinary local recalculation:
| Function | Documented refresh timing |
|---|---|
IMPORTRANGE |
30 minutes |
IMPORTHTML, IMPORTFEED, IMPORTDATA, and IMPORTXML |
1 hour |
GOOGLEFINANCE |
May be delayed up to 20 minutes |
These are refresh intervals listed in Google Docs Editors Help, not guarantees that changing calculation mode will force an immediate update.

Changing calculation mode is not a universal performance fix. Google notes that editing a cell can make Sheets evaluate that cell and its dependent cells. Volatile functions such as TODAY, NOW, and RAND, as well as long dependency chains, can add calculation work. Review whether those formulas and dependencies are necessary in the parts of the sheet that are slow. Google’s performance guidance discusses these factors.
