Android Auto’s startup behavior and music playback are separate settings: changing one may not change the other. On your phone, open Settings and search for “Android Auto,” or go to Connected devices > Connection preferences > Android Auto if those menus are available. Review the startup options and look for a media control such as “Automatically resume media” or “Start Music Automatically.” Labels and availability can vary by phone and software version.

Look in the startup or media section for a control related to automatic media playback or resuming. Google-hosted community answers have used labels including “Automatically resume media” and “Start Music Automatically”; these are examples, not guaranteed current wording. Turn the control off to prevent the setting from requesting a resume, or on if you want media to resume when Android Auto connects. The current Google help page for listening to media does not document this consumer autoplay toggle, so its location and availability are version-dependent: Google’s Android Auto settings guidance; Google-hosted Android Auto community discussions.

If playback continues after you disable the control, the sound may be starting from the car stereo or the media app rather than from this Android Auto setting. Check the vehicle’s infotainment settings and the app’s own playback settings as well. The phone, car, and media app are distinct parts of the playback chain, so one toggle may not govern every source.

Change whether Android Auto starts when you connect
Open Android Auto in your phone’s Settings using the search or menu path above, then review its startup options. The available controls depend on your phone and software version. If the phone setting does not produce the behavior you want, check the car’s infotainment settings and owner’s manual; vehicle menus and automatic-start behavior differ by model. Google directs drivers to the vehicle manufacturer for model-specific compatibility information: Android Auto setup and compatibility guidance.
For first-time wireless setup, Google says to pair the phone and car over Bluetooth and follow the prompts. Android Auto should start within a few seconds after pairing; if it does not, follow the car display’s prompts or tap Android Auto on the display. Setup instructions: Google’s Android Auto help.

Check the connection mode
Wired and wireless Android Auto have different setup requirements. Neither connection mode is itself a music-resume setting.
| Connection | Requirements and checks |
|---|---|
| Wired | Use a compatible phone and car with a high-quality USB cable. If Android Auto does not connect, check the cable and USB port, follow setup prompts, and confirm vehicle compatibility. Google’s connection requirements; Google’s setup guidance. |
| Wireless | You need a compatible phone and car, active data, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support on the phone. For first-time setup, pair over Bluetooth; keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on while completing setup. Google’s connection requirements; Google’s setup guidance. |
Choose and start a media app
The media app must work with Android Auto and be signed in on your phone before Android Auto starts. Some services require a subscription or premium account. On the car display, open the app launcher and choose a media app; the recent apps area may also show the media app you used most recently. Google’s help examples include voice requests for playlists, songs, radio stations, or artists, but available apps and commands can vary: Listen to media with Android Auto; Find compatible apps.

Music still starts after you disable the resume control: Check the car stereo and media app settings, since either may be involved. Google’s developer guidance says media apps should not automatically begin playback merely because a connection occurs; playback should follow system or user action. This is guidance for app developers, not a consumer setting: Android Developers: Build media apps for cars.
