Choose Light, Dark, Clear, Tinted, Automatic, or larger icons without replacing any apps. If you want a photo, logo, illustration, or downloaded PNG for one app, create a Home Screen shortcut with the Shortcuts app instead.
The fastest way to customize all iPhone icons
These controls require iOS 26 and affect Home Screen app icons and widgets together. They apply a system appearance; they do not let you upload a different image for every installed app.
- Go to the Home Screen and touch and hold an empty area until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit, then Customize.
- Choose Light, Dark, Clear, or Tinted.
- If you choose Tinted, adjust the color and saturation controls. Use the eyedropper to sample a color from your wallpaper.
- Choose the larger icon size if you want bigger icons without app names.
Apple documents this panel in its iOS 26 iPhone guide. The exact controls shown can vary with the selected treatment.
How to make iPhone icons dark
- Touch and hold the Home Screen background.
- Tap Edit → Customize.
- Tap Dark.
Choose Auto, where available, for dark icons at night and light icons during the day. Dark in this menu means Apple’s system dark treatment, not a custom black PNG. Individual apps may render somewhat differently because developers can supply appearance-specific assets or let iOS generate variants. How to make icons tinted or monochrome
- Open Edit → Customize on the Home Screen.
- Tap Tinted.
- Move the color and saturation sliders until the icons look right.
- Tap the eyedropper to sample a color from your wallpaper, if desired.
- Select the light, dark, or automatic tint treatment offered on your device.
Tint color sets the hue; saturation controls intensity. Light tinting primarily colors icon and widget backgrounds, while dark tinting applies color to glyphs and content against darker backgrounds, as described in Apple’s iOS 26 feature overview. Rendering is not guaranteed to be perfectly monochrome for every app.
How to make clear or glass-style icons
- Touch and hold the Home Screen.
- Tap Edit → Customize.
- Tap Clear.
- Choose Light, Dark, or Auto.
Clear applies Apple’s translucent system styling. It does not turn each icon into a fully transparent custom image.

How to make icons larger and remove app names
In Edit → Customize, select the large icon option. Apple removes the app names beneath the icons when this size is enabled. The result is cleaner and more minimalist, but visually similar apps can be harder to identify without labels.
How to use your own picture as an app icon
For a personal photo, downloaded PNG, logo, illustration, or themed icon, use a shortcut that opens the app:

- Open Shortcuts and create a new shortcut.
- Add the Open App action and select the app.
- Open the shortcut’s details or sharing controls and choose Add to Home Screen.
- Tap the icon preview, then choose a photo or image from Photos.
- Enter the name you want displayed and tap Add.
Apple explains this workflow in its Shortcuts guide. The result is a shortcut tile that launches the app; it does not rewrite the installed app’s icon. You can move the original app off your main Home Screen page while leaving it installed in the App Library. Shortcut behavior, including badges and notifications, can vary by iOS build, so verify it on your phone.
How to change a shortcut’s color or glyph
To change the shortcut’s appearance inside Shortcuts, open the shortcut, tap its icon or details control, tap the icon beside its name, choose a color swatch or glyph, and tap Done. Apple says new shortcuts use one of 15 colors by default. This changes the shortcut in the Shortcuts app; selecting a photo during Add to Home Screen is the route for a custom Home Screen picture.

How to customize several icons efficiently
- Choose your icon set, dimensions, background, and contrast before creating shortcuts.
- Create one Open App shortcut per app and use consistent names.
- Add the shortcuts to the same Home Screen page.
- Move original app icons to another page or a folder instead of deleting the apps.
- Keep frequently used apps that do not need custom art in a folder or the App Library.
iOS does not provide a universal one-tap importer for every third-party icon pack. If you download artwork, check the creator’s attribution and redistribution terms before using it.

Check the app’s own settings first
Some developers provide alternate app icons. If the app offers an icon setting, selecting its default or alternate icon is the cleanest per-app solution. This is an app-by-app feature, not an iPhone-wide setting; Apple describes the capability in its app-icon guidance.

Use Shortcuts when no alternate icon exists
Create an Open App shortcut and add it to the Home Screen with your image. This changes one visible launcher without changing the appearance of every other icon.
How to undo custom icons
Reset built-in styling
Return to Home Screen → touch and hold the background → Edit → Customize, then select Light or the default option shown on your device.
Remove a custom shortcut
Remove the shortcut tile from the Home Screen, then put the original app icon back from another Home Screen page or the App Library if you moved it. Removing the shortcut is not the same as deleting the app.
Restore an app-specific icon
Open the app’s own settings and select its default icon, if that control is available.

- Customize is missing: Confirm you are editing the Home Screen, not the Lock Screen or Today View, and update to a compatible iOS 26 release. Menu labels can vary by language and software build.
- Icons are not perfectly monochrome: Different app assets may use developer-supplied or system-generated appearance variants.
- Widgets do not match exactly: The same panel affects widgets, but their content and layouts differ.
- The custom image is cropped: Use a centered subject with generous margins for the rounded icon presentation.
- The shortcut opens the wrong app: Edit it and verify the Open App action’s selection.
- The original icon disappeared: Check other Home Screen pages, folders, and the App Library before reinstalling anything.
- A shortcut was deleted: Search for the app or find it in the App Library; deleting a shortcut does not normally remove the installed app.
- An icon-pack app requests broad access: Prefer direct image files when possible, and review photo-library, tracking, and account permissions.

For a dark, tinted, clear, or minimalist Home Screen, start with iOS 26’s Customize panel. Use Shortcuts only when you need artwork that Apple’s system treatments cannot provide.
