How to Change an Event’s Duration Without Changing Its End Time in Google Calendar

Change a Google Calendar event’s start time without moving its end time by checking both time fields before saving.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To shorten or lengthen a Google Calendar event while keeping its end time fixed, edit the event, change its start time, and make sure the original end time is still entered before you save. For example, changing a 2:00–3:00 event to 2:15–3:00 makes it 45 minutes long.

Change the event in Google Calendar on a computer

  1. Open Google Calendar on your computer and click the event.
  2. Click Edit event, if that option appears.
  3. Change the start time to the time you want.
  4. Check the end-time field. Keep the original end time, or enter it again if it changed while editing.
  5. Confirm that both displayed times are correct, then click Save.

Google’s event data uses separate start and end date-time fields, but its API documentation does not say whether the consumer editor automatically adjusts the end time when you change the start. The reliable approach is to verify both fields yourself before saving. See Google Calendar API event creation and event updates.

Change the duration on Android

Google’s Android instructions say to change an event’s duration by tapping and dragging the circle at the top or bottom of the event. You can also open an existing event, tap Edit, make changes, and save. The instructions do not describe a gesture that locks the end time while you adjust the duration.

  1. In the Calendar app, tap and drag the event’s top or bottom circle to adjust its duration.
  2. Check the resulting end time. If it is not the time you need, open the event, tap Edit, correct the time, and save.

See Google Calendar’s Android event instructions.

Events near a time-zone change

Calendar displays event times in each invitee’s local time zone and converts events to UTC. Google warns that past or future event times can display incorrectly if time-zone rules change. For an event near a daylight-saving change—or one with separate start and end time zones—verify the date, time zone, and end time after editing. See Google Calendar’s time-zone guidance.
