On a compatible Amazon Fire tablet, turn off Alexa wake-word listening at Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode. This stops the tablet from responding to the wake word; it does not delete Alexa history, disable every way to open Alexa, or change Fire OS app-usage, advertising, and location settings. Those are separate controls. If you use a tablet that is not a Fire tablet—or do not see the Alexa setting—these steps may not apply to your model.
What the microphone setting changes
On supported Fire tablets, the control described in Amazon’s tablet help is Alexa Hands-Free Mode. Turning it off disables Alexa’s hands-free, wake-word activation. It is the relevant setting if your goal is to stop the tablet from waking to a spoken Alexa wake word.

That is not the same as physically disconnecting or powering off the tablet’s microphone. Amazon’s Fire tablet instructions describe a software control for Alexa hands-free listening; they do not describe a dedicated physical microphone-disconnect switch on a Fire tablet. Amazon’s separate explanation that a microphone-off button disconnects power applies to Echo devices, not to the Fire tablet controls described here.

It also helps to distinguish wake-word detection from cloud transmission. Amazon says the Fire tablet detects the wake word using on-device keyword spotting. After it detects the wake word, it streams audio to the cloud, including a fraction of a second of audio before the wake word. Amazon’s Fire tablet help describes a blue light bar while Alexa is recording and sending a request. This description does not establish that all ambient audio is continuously streamed to the cloud.

In practical terms, the hands-free switch changes one route into Alexa: speaking the wake word. It is not a general-purpose microphone kill switch, a history-erasure command, or an account-wide Alexa shutdown. If your concern is that Alexa might activate by voice, turn off Hands-Free Mode. If your concern is past interactions or how long they are retained, use Alexa Privacy separately. If you want to adjust app-usage, advertising, or location preferences, use the corresponding Fire tablet privacy controls.
Turn off Alexa hands-free listening
Use the Fire tablet Settings app
- Open Settings on the Fire tablet.
- Tap Alexa.
- Switch Hands-Free Mode off. Amazon’s Fire tablet help identifies this switch as the way to deactivate Alexa hands-free.
The switch controls wake-word access. Amazon says that, outside Show Mode, you can still open Alexa by pressing and holding the tablet’s Home button. If you want to prevent that kind of access as well, the hands-free switch alone does not do so.
When you want wake-word operation again, use the Hands-Free Mode switch to turn it back on, provided the tablet and its configuration support the feature. Turning it back on restores hands-free wake-word access; it does not change your Alexa history or retention preferences.

On supported Fire tablets, a Quick Actions shortcut may be available without opening Settings. Swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal Quick Actions. The label depends on the tablet’s mode:
- Outside Show Mode: select Alexa Hands Free.
- In Show Mode: select the Alexa Microphone/Camera on/off icon.
These are Amazon-described shortcuts; the exact controls can depend on model and software version. In Show Mode, Amazon says a red bar and icon indicate that hands-free is turned off. Outside Show Mode, an icon appears in the status bar. Treat these as the indicators Amazon describes, not as a promise that every model displays an identical symbol.
Show Mode matters because the shortcut is labeled differently there. If the name you see does not match the steps for the other mode, look for the mode-appropriate control rather than assuming that the feature is missing. Quick Actions are an alternate way to reach the hands-free control; they are not a separate setting for deleting recordings or changing account data retention.
Use the volume-button shortcut
Amazon’s Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs also document a Fire tablet shortcut: press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down together for three seconds to turn hands-free off. This is a shortcut for the software setting, not a physical microphone power-disconnect. If the shortcut is unavailable or does not appear to work on your device, use Settings instead.

This button combination is useful if you want a quick way to deactivate hands-free without navigating through Settings. It should not be confused with a hardware switch that cuts microphone power: Amazon describes it as a way to turn Alexa hands-free off. For a visible confirmation, check the Hands-Free Mode setting or the indicator Amazon describes for your current mode.
Choose the control that matches your privacy goal
There is no single tablet toggle that handles every Alexa and Fire OS privacy choice. The controls below affect different things, so choose the one that corresponds to what you want to change.
| Goal | Control or path | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Stop Alexa responding to the wake word | Fire tablet: Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode | Turns Alexa hands-free activation off. Outside Show Mode, pressing and holding Home can still open Alexa. |
| Switch hands-free off from the current screen | Quick Actions: Alexa Hands Free outside Show Mode, or Alexa Microphone/Camera in Show Mode | A mode-dependent shortcut for the hands-free control. |
| Review or delete Alexa interactions | Alexa app: More > Alexa Privacy, or amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings | Account-level controls for Alexa interaction history and retention; separate from the tablet’s hands-free switch. |
| Change app-usage, advertising, or location settings | Fire tablet Settings: Apps & Games or Wireless | Device privacy settings; these do not replace Alexa hands-free or Alexa history controls. |
Use the first two choices when the issue is voice activation on the tablet. Use Alexa Privacy when you want to review or manage interactions already associated with your account, or change how long Alexa data is retained. Use Fire OS privacy settings when you are changing collection of app-usage data, interest-based advertising, or location services. These categories are related to privacy, but one does not substitute for another.
There is also a difference between normal tablet mode and Show Mode. The underlying task—turn off hands-free—is the same, but Quick Actions labels and status indicators can vary by mode. Check the control that matches how the tablet is currently being used.

Manage Alexa recordings and interaction history
Turning hands-free off changes how Alexa can be activated on the tablet; it does not itself erase prior interactions or set an account retention policy. To review or manage Alexa interaction history, use More > Alexa Privacy in the Alexa app or go to amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings. Amazon describes these as account-level controls, distinct from the tablet’s activation setting.
This distinction is important if you turn off the wake word because you want fewer new hands-free interactions. The switch affects activation going forward; it is not a request to remove existing recordings or transcripts. Conversely, changing retention options in Alexa Privacy does not turn off hands-free listening on one Fire tablet. If you want both changes, make them in their respective controls.
Review, delete, or set an automatic deletion period
In Alexa Privacy, you can review or delete recordings, transcripts, and typed requests associated with Alexa interactions. Amazon describes automatic deletion options after 3 months or 18 months. The setting is about Alexa interaction data; changing it does not switch off hands-free listening on a particular tablet.
The choice between 3 and 18 months is a retention preference, not an activation setting. It determines an automatic deletion period for the Alexa interaction data addressed by the setting. If you do not want to wait for the selected period, Amazon also provides review and deletion controls. Review what is listed in the account controls and select the deletion action for the interactions you want removed.
Amazon says deleting voice recordings, text transcripts, and typed requests associated with a chat deletes those items from its cloud. It also explains that other interaction-related records may remain when needed for functions such as reminders, shopping lists, or actions Alexa took. Therefore, deleting interaction history should not be read as a guarantee that every record connected to an Alexa interaction disappears.
Amazon cautions that deleting Alexa data can reduce personalization and improvements based on interactions, and that some features may stop working. Consider that trade-off before changing retention settings if you rely on personalized Alexa features or interaction history. Deletion and privacy controls are choices about the data Amazon identifies in those controls, not a promise that every dependent service will behave exactly as before.
Understand the “don’t save voice recordings” option
Amazon also describes an option not to save voice recordings. With that option, Amazon says voice recordings are deleted after processing. Transcripts and typed requests are still retained for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat, then automatically deleted. This is not equivalent to saving no text at all or instantly removing every item connected to a conversation.
The 30-day period is measured from the last interaction in a chat, according to Amazon’s description. That means the option should not be interpreted as immediate deletion of transcripts after each request. It also applies to the voice recordings differently from the text: Amazon says the recordings are deleted after processing, while transcripts and typed requests have the stated retention period.

Change other Fire tablet privacy settings separately
Fire OS includes device settings that address app usage, advertising, and location. They are separate from both Alexa hands-free activation and the Alexa Privacy history controls. Amazon lists these paths:
- App-usage collection: Settings > Apps & Games > Collect App Usage Data.
- Interest-based advertising: Settings > Apps & Games > Advertising ID > Interest-based Ads.
- Location: Settings > Wireless > Location-Based Services.
These controls concern device or app data, advertising ID, and location; they do not turn off Alexa hands-free or delete Alexa interaction history. Amazon says the settings are device-specific. If a tablet has multiple profiles, choose the settings separately for each profile. Some devices also expose settings through the Amazon account under Privacy Settings > Amazon Devices Privacy.
For households with more than one profile, do not assume a change made for one profile automatically changes the others. Amazon’s guidance says these device settings are selected for each profile where multiple profiles are present. Likewise, an Amazon account privacy control and an individual Fire tablet setting answer different questions: account-level Alexa history controls concern interactions, while the listed Fire OS settings concern the device’s app usage, advertising ID, or location.

If the Alexa setting is missing or does not behave as expected
- No Alexa entry in Settings: Amazon’s instructions apply to compatible Fire tablets, not every tablet or every Fire tablet configuration. Menu names and feature availability can vary. Check the current help information for your specific model rather than assuming the setting exists universally.
- You still open Alexa by holding Home: That is expected outside Show Mode when hands-free is off. The hands-free setting stops wake-word activation; it does not disable this separate invocation method.
- The Quick Actions label differs: The shortcut name depends on mode. Look for Alexa Hands Free outside Show Mode, or the Alexa Microphone/Camera control in Show Mode. If it is not present, open Settings and use the Hands-Free Mode switch.
- You are looking for a physical microphone cutoff: The tablet instructions establish an Alexa hands-free software control, not a physical microphone disconnect. Do not infer an Echo-device microphone-button feature from the tablet setting.
- You want old recordings removed: Use Alexa Privacy in the app or the account privacy page. Switching off hands-free does not itself delete existing history.
- You changed an app, advertising, or location preference: Those settings do not control Alexa activation or Alexa interaction retention. Change the corresponding Alexa setting separately if that is also your goal.
If the available shortcut seems inconsistent with the instructions, first confirm whether the tablet is in Show Mode or outside it. Amazon lists separate Quick Actions labels for those two states. If the menu path or indicator still differs, the help instructions do not provide a complete compatibility chart for every generation, Fire OS release, region, and profile. A missing control may be a compatibility or interface difference rather than evidence that the account history control or another setting has changed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to check that your change took effect
After switching Hands-Free Mode off, use the indicator described for your current mode as a visual check: Amazon says Show Mode displays a red bar and icon, while outside Show Mode an icon appears in the status bar. You can also revisit Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode to check the switch. Do not use a successful Home-button launch as evidence that wake-word listening remains on; Amazon documents Home-button access separately from hands-free mode.
For data-retention changes, check the Alexa Privacy controls in the app or on the account page rather than relying on the tablet’s Alexa switch. The activation setting and the account’s history and deletion settings answer different questions.
A useful final check is to identify exactly what you changed: Hands-Free Mode for wake-word access, Alexa Privacy for interaction history and retention, or the relevant Fire OS setting for app-usage, advertising, or location data. If you changed only one category, the others are not automatically changed with it.
What Amazon’s guidance does—and does not—establish
Amazon’s support instructions provide controls for compatible Fire tablets and explain how Alexa activation, interaction history, and several Fire OS privacy settings are separated. They do not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every tablet generation, Fire OS version, region, and profile, and the help pages do not show publication dates. As a result, a menu path or indicator may differ on a particular device. If the listed path is absent, consult the current help for that tablet model rather than applying instructions for another device family.
Amazon’s pages relevant here include Learn About Using Alexa on Your Fire Tablet, which identifies the Hands-Free Mode switch, and Alexa and Alexa Device FAQs, which describes Quick Actions, the three-second volume-button method, wake-word processing, and Alexa Privacy options. The directions should be treated as model- and software-dependent where Amazon says the tablet must be compatible.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off Alexa’s microphone on my Fire tablet?
On a compatible Fire tablet, open Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode and switch it off. This disables Alexa hands-free wake-word activation; Amazon does not describe this setting as a physical microphone power disconnect.
Can I still use Alexa after turning Hands-Free Mode off?
Amazon says that outside Show Mode, Alexa can still be opened by pressing and holding the tablet’s Home button. The Hands-Free Mode setting stops wake-word activation, not every way to invoke Alexa.
Does turning off Alexa Hands-Free Mode delete my recordings?
No. It changes wake-word access on the tablet, not account history or retention. Use More > Alexa Privacy in the Alexa app or amazon.com/alexaprivacysettings to review or manage interaction data.
What does “don’t save voice recordings” mean?
Amazon says voice recordings are deleted after processing when this option is selected. Transcripts and typed requests are retained for 30 days after the last interaction in a chat, then automatically deleted.
Why can’t I find Alexa Hands-Free Mode in Settings?
Amazon’s instructions apply to compatible Fire tablets, and menu names or feature availability may vary by model and software version. If you do not see Settings > Alexa, check the current help information for your specific tablet rather than assuming the control is available on every tablet.
The Bottom Line
On a compatible Fire tablet, turn off wake-word activation at Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode, or use the mode-appropriate Quick Actions shortcut. This is an Alexa hands-free software control—not a physical microphone disconnect—and Alexa may still be opened with Home outside Show Mode. Manage interaction history and retention in Alexa Privacy, and change app-usage, advertising, or location settings separately.
