To change the videos going out on a YouTube Live broadcast, update the playlist in OBS while keeping the same encoder session connected. OBS’s VLC Video Source supports playlists, but neither OBS nor YouTube promises that editing one live will be completely invisible to viewers. Rehearse the exact change first, and use a standby scene or transition to cover any reload or gap.
What this method changes—and what it does not
This workflow changes the media sent by your encoder, such as OBS. The playlist is in OBS; YouTube Live Control Room handles the broadcast connection and encoder settings. Keeping that connection active avoids deliberately stopping and restarting the broadcast, but does not guarantee a gap-free picture or sound during every playlist edit.

If by “playlist” you mean a YouTube watch-page playlist or viewer queue, that is a different feature. YouTube’s queue help describes a viewer’s watch session, not a way to change the video being sent out in a live broadcast. YouTube Help: Add videos to your queue

Set up an OBS playlist before going live
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video Source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS VLC Video Source guide.
- Prepare a scene. In OBS, select or create the scene you use for the broadcast, then add a VLC Video Source. Populate its playlist with the media files or paths you want to play.
- Choose playback behavior. Set the source’s loop or shuffle options if needed, and review its visibility behavior. Confirm the order and playback of the actual files before relying on them on air.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the intended stream and use its stream key, server URL, and encoder settings in OBS. Follow YouTube’s current setup guidance: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
- Start the encoder session. Begin streaming from OBS using the configured broadcast. Keep this same session active when you later change the playlist.
Change the playlist while the broadcast is live
- Stage a cover if needed. If viewers should not see a source reload, prepare a standby scene or a transition that can cover the playlist change. A simple cut to a cover scene is an operational workaround, not a guarantee that the media source will switch without a visual or audio gap.
- Update the VLC Video Source playlist in OBS. Add, remove, reorder, or otherwise change the items using the source’s playlist controls. Avoid stopping the OBS stream or disconnecting the encoder while you make the change.
- Return to the playlist output. Once the intended source is ready, transition back from the standby scene if you used one. Check that the expected item is playing and that its audio is present.
- Monitor the broadcast. Watch the live output for a blank frame, a media reload, an unexpected restart, an audio discontinuity, or an item starting at the wrong point. Keeping OBS connected preserves the encoder session; it does not itself prevent source-level interruptions.
Rehearse the exact change before relying on it
OBS documents VLC Video playlists and source visibility behavior, while YouTube documents the stream and encoder setup. Those capabilities do not amount to a promise that every live playlist edit will be seamless. Test with the same OBS version, source setup, media, and transition you plan to use on air.

- Check whether changing the playlist reloads the current source or briefly produces a blank frame.
- Listen for an audio break, overlap, or unexpected change in level.
- Confirm whether the next file starts at its beginning or at another playback position.
- Test the standby scene or transition and make sure returning to the playlist shows the intended item.
- Verify that the OBS encoder remains connected throughout the change.
If the change causes a problem
- VLC Video Source is unavailable: install VLC, matching the architecture of OBS; OBS says 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The wrong item plays: review the playlist order and loop or shuffle settings, then rehearse the change again before using it live.
- Viewers see a blank or reloading frame: the source may be changing visibly. Use a standby scene or transition to cover the edit, and verify the result in a rehearsal; no documented setting guarantees an invisible playlist edit.
- The broadcast disconnects: check that the OBS stream session remains active and that the configured YouTube stream key and server settings are still correct. Reconnect using the stream setup shown in YouTube Live Control Room if necessary.
- Audio cuts out or the next video starts unexpectedly: check source playback and visibility behavior, then test the same sequence before returning to the live program.
