Discord spoiler tags let you hide text, images, videos, links, and attachments behind a clickable cover so people can choose whether to reveal them. They are useful for plot details, game endings, sensitive screenshots, surprise announcements, or any content that should not appear openly in a channel.
You can censor content manually with Markdown by wrapping text in double vertical bars, or by marking uploaded media as a spoiler before sending it. On mobile and desktop, the exact controls look a little different, but the result is the same: hidden content that users must tap or click to view.

Bots can also help by detecting certain words, applying spoiler formatting, or reminding users to hide sensitive content in busy servers. Spoiler tags are simple, but they have limits, so it helps to know how they behave across devices, attachments, previews, and moderation workflows.
What Discord Spoiler Tags Do and When to Use Them
Discord spoiler tags are a built-in way to hide content behind a click-or-tap overlay. When you mark something as a spoiler, Discord masks it so other members do not see the text, image, video, link preview, or attachment immediately. A user can reveal the hidden content only by selecting it. This makes spoiler tags useful for conversations where some people want to participate without accidentally seeing material they would rather avoid.

For text, a spoiler appears as a dark covered block in the message. For images, videos, and attachments, Discord displays a blurred or covered preview with a spoiler label. For links, the visible URL can be hidden if you wrap it correctly, and Discord may also hide the preview depending on how the message is formatted and how the platform handles that link. Spoiler tags do not delete, encrypt, or privately store content; they only add a visual barrier inside the chat interface.
Common situations for spoiler tags
- Movies, shows, books, and games: Hide plot twists, endings, character deaths, puzzle solutions, boss reveals, or new episode details.
- Game strategy channels: Cover walkthrough steps, raid mechanics, secret locations, Wordle-style answers, or puzzle hints so players can choose when to view them.
- Community events: Hide contest answers, scavenger hunt clues, tournament results, or surprise announcements until members are ready.
- Sensitive or intense media: Mask images, videos, or descriptions that may be disturbing, graphic, flashing, or otherwise unwanted in a general channel.
- Moderation workflows: Let moderators discuss reported content, slurs, scams, or suspicious links with reduced accidental exposure in staff channels.
Spoiler tags are especially helpful in large servers because members often join from different time zones and consume media at different speeds. A new game release, a live sports result, or the finale of a popular series may be fair to discuss in one channel but frustrating to stumble across in another. By hiding the reveal, you can keep the conversation moving while giving readers control over what they uncover.
Server rules should define when spoilers are expected. For example, a server might require spoiler tags for new episode discussion for seven days, game story content for one month, or graphic attachments at all times. Some communities also separate discussion into dedicated spoiler channels, where tags are optional or used only for especially sensitive details. This combination works well: channel organization sets the general boundary, while spoiler tags handle individual messages.
There are limits to keep in mind. Spoiler tags are not a security feature, and they should not be used to share private data, passwords, personal information, or content that breaks Discord’s rules. Anyone who can access the channel can reveal the hidden item. Spoilers may also be visible in some notifications, bot logs, moderation tools, search results, or third-party clients depending on how the message is captured. Treat spoiler tags as courtesy masking, not access control.
How to Manually Censor Text with Spoiler Tags
To manually censor text on Discord, wrap the part you want to hide in double vertical bars: ||spoiler text||. After you send the message, Discord displays that section as a dark spoiler block. Other users can reveal it by clicking or tapping the hidden text. This works in regular server channels, direct messages, group DMs, threads, and most places where Discord supports standard message formatting.
Basic spoiler tag syntax
The simplest method is to type two pipe characters before and after the text you want to conceal. On most keyboards, the pipe character is typed with Shift + \. For example, typing ||the final boss is the king|| sends a message where only that phrase is hidden. You can place spoiler tags around a single word, a full sentence, or mulle sentences within the same message.
- Hide one word: I think the traitor is ||Mira||.
- Hide a sentence: ||The hidden room is behind the fireplace.||
- Mix visible and hidden text: Episode 8 was wild because ||the captain was working for the enemy||.
- Use multiple spoilers: First twist: ||the map is fake||. Second twist: ||the guide knows already||.
You can also use Discord’s built-in formatting menu on desktop. Type your message, highlight the text you want to censor, and choose the eye-shaped spoiler icon from the pop-up toolbar. Discord will automatically add the spoiler formatting around the selected text. This is useful if you do not want to type Markdown manually or if you are editing a longer message with several hidden sections.

Spoiler tags can be combined with common Markdown styles such as bold, italics, inline code, and links, but the placement matters. If you want bold text inside a spoiler, put the bold formatting inside the spoiler bars, such as ||**hidden bold text**||. If you want the entire formatted phrase hidden, keep the spoiler bars on the outside. For a link, you can hide the link text, the URL, or the entire Markdown link, depending on what you want readers to see before they click.
| Goal | What to Type |
|---|---|
| Hide plain text | ||Darth Vader is Luke’s father|| |
| Hide bold text | ||**major spoiler**|| |
| Hide italic text | ||*secret ending*|| |
| Hide a Markdown link | ||spoiler article|| |
Before sending, check that both opening and closing spoiler bars are present. A missing bar can leave the text visible or make the message look broken. Also make sure there are no extra spaces between the bars and the hidden text if you want a clean result, such as ||spoiler|| instead of || spoiler ||. Spaces usually still work, but they become part of the hidden content and can make short spoilers look wider than expected.

If you want to censor only part of a longer paragraph, wrap only that section instead of hiding the whole message. This lets readers understand the topic while choosing whether to reveal the sensitive detail. For example: The match was close until ||the goalkeeper scored in stoppage time||. That approach is especially helpful in movie channels, gaming chats, book clubs, sports discussions, and support communities where people may be at different points in the same content.
How to Mark Images, Videos, and Attachments as Spoilers
Discord can also censor uploaded media, not just typed text. When you mark an image, video, or file attachment as a spoiler, Discord hides the preview behind a blurred overlay or spoiler label until someone chooses to click or tap it. This is useful for screenshots that reveal story content, game results, private chat details, sensitive memes, logs, art previews, or anything your server expects members to opt into viewing.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Mark an upload as a spoiler on desktop
On the Discord desktop app or web version, the most reliable method is to use Discord’s built-in spoiler option before sending the file. Click the plus button beside the message box, choose Upload a File, then select your image, video, or attachment. Before you send it, look for the attachment preview in the message composer. Click the small eye icon or open the attachment options menu, then choose Mark as Spoiler. Once enabled, send the message as usual.
You can also rename a file before uploading it by adding SPOILER_ to the beginning of the filename. For example, ending.png becomes SPOILER_ending.png, and match-results.mp4 becomes SPOILER_match-results.mp4. Discord recognizes that prefix and treats the attachment as a spoiler after upload. This filename method is handy when you are uploading several files at once or when the attachment options are not appearing correctly.
Supported attachment types
Spoiler marking works best with media that Discord can preview directly in chat, such as common image and video formats. Regular downloadable files can also be labeled as spoilers, although the exact display can vary depending on the file type, client version, and server settings.
- Images: PNG, JPG, JPEG, GIF, and WebP previews can be hidden behind a spoiler overlay.
- Videos: MP4 and other supported video uploads can be hidden before playback.
- GIFs: Uploaded GIF files can be marked as spoilers; GIFs from external picker services may behave differently.
- Files: PDFs, ZIP files, documents, and other attachments can be sent with a spoiler label, though they may not show the same blurred preview effect.
Mark links as spoilers
If you paste a link that generates an embed preview, you can wrap the URL in spoiler bars to hide the link text: ||https://example.com/spoiler-page||. In many cases, this also suppresses or hides the preview behind spoiler formatting, but embed behavior can vary by site and Discord client. For stricter censoring, place the spoiler bars around the link and add a short warning outside the spoiler, such as Final boss screenshot: followed by the hidden URL.

If an attachment does not appear censored after sending, delete it quickly and resend it using the attachment menu or the SPOILER_ filename prefix. Make sure the prefix is at the very start of the filename, with no spaces before it. Also check that you are not trying to spoiler an image already embedded from another app or bot, since bot-posted media and external embeds may require a different workflow or bot configuration.
Using Spoiler Tags on Discord Mobile
Discord spoiler tags work on mobile in much the same way they do on desktop: anything wrapped in double vertical bars is hidden until someone taps it. This is useful when you are posting from a phone and need to censor story spoilers, puzzle answers, sensitive screenshots, links, or moderation-related context without waiting until you are back at a computer.
Censoring text on iPhone and Android
The most reliable mobile method is to type the Markdown spoiler syntax directly. Place two vertical bars before and after the text you want to hide. For example, typing ||the boss is weak to fire|| will display as a covered spoiler in the channel. Other members can reveal it by tapping the hidden text once.

- Check that there are no missing bars or extra spaces inside the opening or closing markers.
- Send the message.
Finding the vertical bar character depends on your mobile keyboard. On many iPhone keyboards, tap 123, then #+=, and look for |. On many Android keyboards, tap ?123 or the symbols key, then switch to the second symbols page if needed. If your keyboard makes the character hard to find, you can copy and paste || into the message field and reuse it whenever you need spoiler formatting.

Marking mobile uploads as spoilers
For images, videos, and other files, Discord mobile may show a spoiler option before you send the upload. Tap the + icon or media picker, choose your file, then look for an attachment preview. Depending on your app version and platform, you may be able to tap the preview or open the attachment options and select Mark as spoiler. When sent, the file appears blurred or covered until viewers tap to reveal it.
If you do not see the spoiler option for an attachment, update the Discord app and try again. You can also rename a file before uploading it so the filename begins with SPOILER_, such as SPOILER_map.png. Discord commonly treats files named this way as spoilers, which can help when the mobile interface does not expose the toggle clearly. This method is especially handy for screenshots, leak images, tournament results, or documents that should not appear openly in chat.
Mobile spoiler troubleshooting
- The spoiler did not hide: make sure you used two bars on each side, not one, and that the closing || is present.
- Only part of the text is hidden: check where the bars start and end. Discord hides only the content between the matching markers.
- The attachment posted normally: delete it if needed, then resend it using the mobile spoiler toggle or a filename starting with SPOILER_.
- The bars are hard to type: save ||spoiler|| as a keyboard text replacement or clipboard snippet.
- The spoiler appears revealed to you: after tapping a spoiler, Discord shows it on your screen, but that does not mean it is revealed for everyone else.
How Bots Can Help Automate Spoiler Censoring
Discord bots can reduce the amount of manual spoiler tagging needed in busy servers, especially where users often discuss new episodes, game leaks, sports results, patch s, or event outcomes. Instead of relying only on members to type ||spoiler text|| correctly, a moderation or utility bot can watch for certain words, phrases, links, or file types and respond according to rules you configure. Depending on the bot, that response might be deleting the original message, reposting it with spoiler tags, warning the user, moving the message to a spoiler-friendly channel, or asking the user to edit their post.
The most common setup is keyword-based filtering. For example, a server for a TV series might add character names, episode titles, “finale,” “death,” or “post-credit scene” to a spoiler list during release week. A gaming community might filter boss names, datamined terms, unreleased skins, or ending-related phrases. When a member posts one of those terms outside approved channels, the bot can flag the message for moderators or apply an automated action. This works best when the spoiler policy is narrow and time-limited, since broad filters can catch harmless discussion and frustrate regular users.

- Keyword detection: The bot scans messages for configured terms and alerts moderators or removes the message if it appears in a non-spoiler channel.
- Auto-reply reminders: The bot replies with a short instruction such as “Please wrap spoilers with || on both sides” when a user forgets the syntax.
- Channel enforcement: Spoiler-heavy topics can be redirected to channels like #spoilers, #episode-discussion, or #leaks-and-rumors.
- Attachment handling: Some bots can detect image, video, or file uploads and require users to repost them as spoilers, although Discord’s native “Mark as Spoiler” control is still the most reliable method for individual uploads.
- Role-based exceptions: Staff, trusted reviewers, or content teams can be exempted from certain filters while regular members remain covered by the rules.
Many general-purpose moderation bots support this kind of automation through automod rules, custom filters, or reaction-based workflows. Discord’s built-in AutoMod can also block or flag messages containing specified words, which is useful if you want fewer third-party dependencies. For more advanced behavior, such as reposting censored text with spoiler bars, a custom bot may be needed. In that case, the bot needs permission to read messages, manage messages, send messages, and view the relevant channels. If your server has restricted channels, confirm the bot’s role is placed high enough in the role list and has access to the channels where spoiler enforcement should happen.
Automation has limits. Bots usually cannot understand context as well as a human moderator, so a word like a character name may be a spoiler in one conversation and harmless in another. Bots may also miss spoilers hidden in images, screenshots, stylized text, abbreviations, voice chat, or edited messages, depending on how they are built. For best results, combine bot rules with clear channel names, pinned posting guidelines, slowmode during high-traffic releases, and a visible spoiler window such as “Spoilers must be tagged for 72 hours after release.” This keeps enforcement predictable while still giving members a simple way to discuss sensitive content without ruining it for others.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common Spoiler Tag Problems and Fixes
Discord spoiler tags are simple, but small formatting mistakes can make censored text, images, or links appear normally. Most issues come from misplaced bars, unsupported formatting combinations, client differences between desktop and mobile, or attachment settings being missed before upload. If a spoiler does not behave as expected, check the message before sending when possible, then edit or delete it quickly if sensitive content is exposed.
Spoiler text is not hiding
For text, Discord expects two vertical bars on each side of the content: ||spoiler text||. The most common mistake is using only one bar, adding extra spaces inside the markers in a way that breaks formatting, or placing the closing bars in the wrong location. For example, ||this is hidden|| works, while |this is not hidden| does not. If you are censoring only part of a sentence, make sure both opening and closing markers wrap only the words you want hidden.

- Check the characters: Use vertical bars ||, not lowercase Ls, uppercase Is, brackets, or slashes.
- Close every spoiler tag: An opening || needs a matching closing ||.
- Watch copied text: Text copied from websites may include invisible characters that interfere with Markdown.
- Edit the message: If the spoiler fails, use Discord’s edit option and rewrap the content correctly.
Links still show previews
Putting a URL inside spoiler bars usually hides the clickable link text, but Discord may still generate an embed preview depending on the link, server settings, and client behavior. To reduce accidental exposure, wrap the full URL in spoiler bars and consider placing it inside angle brackets as well, such as ||<https://example.com>||. Angle brackets suppress many embeds, while spoiler bars hide the visible link. This is especially useful for videos, article titles, game endings, or social posts where the preview itself might reveal the censored content.
Images or attachments are visible immediately
For uploads, spoiler protection is applied to the attachment, not by typing bars around the filename in the message field. On desktop, after adding a file, use the attachment options and select Mark as Spoiler before sending. On mobile, tap the attachment preview or file options and look for the spoiler checkbox or toggle. If the file has already been sent without spoiler protection, editing the message may not always let you change the attachment’s spoiler state. In that case, delete the message and re-upload the file with the spoiler option enabled.
| Problem | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Text appears normally | Missing or incorrect || markers | Wrap the exact text as ||hidden text|| |
| Link preview reveals content | Discord generated an embed | Use ||<URL>|| or disable embeds where available |
| Image is not blurred | Attachment was not marked as spoiler | Delete and re-upload with Mark as Spoiler enabled |
| Bot does not censor content | Missing permissions or wrong trigger pattern | Check bot role, channel access, and filter configuration |
Bot censoring is inconsistent
If a moderation bot is supposed to add spoiler tags, remove exposed content, or warn users, confirm that it has permission to read messages, manage messages, and post in the affected channel. Also check whether the bot can see threads, forum posts, and private channels. Some bots only scan plain text, so they may miss text inside images, filenames, embeds, stickers, or external previews. For automated spoiler rules, test with harmless sample phrases first, then adjust the bot’s keyword list, regex patterns, ignored roles, and channel exceptions.
Some spoiler issues are caused by Discord client caching or version differences. If a spoiler looks broken on one device but works on another, refresh Discord, update the app, or restart the client. Server members using older app versions may see slightly different menus for marking attachments, but the underlying spoiler behavior is the same once the message is sent correctly. When in doubt, send a test message in a private channel before posting spoilers in a busy server.

Can I spoiler-tag part of a sentence on Discord instead of the whole message?
Yes. Put double vertical bars around only the words you want to hide, such as That boss is ||the final dragon||. Discord will blur only the text inside the bars, while the rest of the sentence stays visible.
How do I mark an image or file as a spoiler before sending it?
On desktop, upload the file, then click the spoiler checkbox or eye icon before sending. On mobile, attach the image or file, open the attachment options if available, and choose “Mark as Spoiler.” If your app version does not show the option, update Discord or rename the file with SPOILER_ at the beginning before uploading.
Do spoiler tags hide content from Discord bots and moderators?
No. Spoiler tags only hide content visually from regular users until they click or tap to reveal it. Bots, moderators, audit tools, and anyone with access to message logs may still be able to read the underlying text or inspect attachments depending on their permissions and setup.
Why are my spoiler tags not working on Discord?
Check that you used two vertical bars on both sides, like ||spoiler text||, with no missing characters. Spoilers may also fail if another Markdown format breaks the syntax, the app is outdated, or the content is inside a place where Discord does not parse Markdown the same way. For files, make sure you marked the attachment as a spoiler before sending, not after.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Can a bot automatically censor spoilers in my Discord server?
Yes, but it depends on the bot’s features and permissions. Moderation or custom bots can detect keywords, phrases, regex patterns, or channel-specific content and repost, delete, warn, or wrap text in spoiler tags. For reliable automation, the bot needs permission to read messages, manage messages if deletion is used, and operate only in channels where that behavior is expected.
Bottom Line
Discord spoiler tags are the simplest way to hide sensitive text, images, links, and attachments until someone chooses to reveal them. Whether you use the built-in spoiler options on desktop and mobile, Markdown with double pipes, or a moderation bot for repeat workflows, the goal is the same: give people control over what they see.
For everyday use, start with manual spoiler tags and reserve bots for servers that need consistency, automation, or stronger moderation habits. If spoilers are not working as expected, check your formatting, app version, permissions, and whether the content type supports spoiler hiding.
