To catch a Pal in Palworld, choose a Pal Sphere that is appropriate for the target’s level, reduce the Pal to low health without knocking it out, and throw from behind before it notices you. A rear throw improves your odds, while Lifmunk Effigies invested at the Statue of Power and capture modules provide longer-term bonuses. Exact sphere unlocks, capture values and some boss rules can change with patches, so verify them in your current game’s Technology menu and patch notes.

How Pal capture works
Every capture attempt combines several factors rather than relying on the sphere alone. The target must still be conscious, its remaining health affects the chance, the sphere tier must be suitable for its level, and your approach can provide a rear-throw advantage. Permanent upgrades can raise capture performance across your entire collection.

A failed throw does not mean the Pal is impossible to catch. It usually means one of the variables was unfavorable: the Pal had too much health, the sphere was too weak, the target had noticed you, or the target’s level and special status made the attempt difficult. Treat each throw as a sequence you can improve, not as a random lottery that cannot be influenced.
What to prepare before you throw
Carry several sphere tiers
Pal Spheres are not interchangeable. Community reports agree on Capture Power values of 7 for the Pal Sphere, 14 for the Mega Sphere and 20 for the Giga Sphere. Higher tiers are intended for stronger or higher-level targets. A sphere rated above the Pal’s level is reported to grant a bonus, while one rated below the target can impose a penalty.

Do not assume that a named sphere automatically guarantees a catch. Capture Power is one input in the calculation, and a high-level Pal at full health can still break free. Carry enough spheres that you can make several attempts after you have weakened the target.
Bring a controlled source of damage
Your objective is low health, not a knockout. Use attacks you can stop immediately, and avoid letting a companion continue attacking while you line up a throw. If your active Pal has a powerful area attack, switch to a weaker move or withdraw it before the target reaches the desired health range.

High-level Pals and bosses can defeat an unprepared character while you are trying to reduce their health. Keep room to retreat, note nearby cover, and carry healing items. For especially dangerous targets, you can weaken the Pal, move far enough away for it to calm down, then circle back for a safer rear throw.
Step-by-step: the reliable beginner capture routine
- Identify the target’s level. Check the Pal’s level before selecting a sphere. Start with a tier that matches or exceeds that level; a sphere below the target’s level is reported to suffer a penalty.
- Clear nearby threats. Hostile creatures or environmental hazards can interrupt the throw. Eliminate distractions only if you can do so without accidentally damaging the target.
- Reduce health carefully. Community guides commonly recommend bringing the Pal to about 25% health or less. Other guides use a tighter 10–20% range, and one reports that moving from roughly 20% to near 1% can improve the displayed catch rate by about 10–20%. These figures are community estimates, not an official formula. Stop attacking as soon as the target is safely low.
- Stop damage-over-time effects. Burning, poison-like effects or any other damage that continues after your attack can finish the Pal while you are positioning yourself. Wait for the effect to end or avoid applying it in the first place.
- Break line of sight if necessary. If the Pal becomes aggressive, use cover or retreat until it settles. A calm target is easier to approach from behind than one actively chasing you.
- Move behind the Pal. Approach from its rear while it has not detected you. A question mark over the Pal’s head indicates that it has spotted you; the reported rear-throw bonus is then lost.
- Throw the appropriate sphere. Aim at the Pal’s body and release while you still have the rear position. Community sources report a rear-throw bonus of up to roughly 20%, depending on the Pal, but the exact value is not confirmed for every species or version.
- Read the result and adjust. If the Pal escapes, lower its health further without fainting it, use a stronger sphere, improve your angle, or add a permanent capture upgrade before trying again. If it faints, it cannot be caught in that encounter.
Pal Sphere tiers and reported Capture Power
The values below are the numbers most consistently reported by community guides. They should be treated as version-sensitive until confirmed in your current Technology menu. The higher tiers have conflicting values across sources.
| Sphere | Reported Capture Power | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Pal Sphere | 7 | Basic sphere for early targets; one report says its unlock is level 1, another says level 2. |
| Mega Sphere | 14 | Second reported tier for stronger or higher-level Pals. |
| Giga Sphere | 20 | Agreed community value, but the actual catch result still depends on health and other modifiers. |
| Hyper Sphere | 26 or 27 | Sources disagree by version; confirm the value and unlock level in-game. |
| Ultra Sphere | 32 or 33 | Conflicting community figures; use the value shown by your current build. |
| Legendary Sphere | 37 or 38 | Conflicting community figures; do not rely on an older guide’s number. |
| Ancient Sphere | About 64 | Reported by one community tracker only and not independently verified. |
One community snippet also says the Pal Sphere recipe was changed to cost one Paldium Fragment without Stone or Wood. That is a single, unverified report rather than a dependable rule. Open the recipe in your own Technology menu before gathering materials.

How low should a Pal’s HP be?
Lower health generally improves the chance, but the safe target is the lowest health you can reach without losing the Pal. A practical beginner range is around 20–25% of the health bar. Experienced players often aim for 10–20% because the additional margin can help against difficult targets, but it leaves very little room for an accidental critical hit or a lingering status effect.

It comes from a community guide with no identified publisher or test conditions. Use it as a reason to weaken carefully, not as a promise that every Pal will become 20% easier to catch.
Ways to avoid an accidental knockout
- Use a weaker attack and issue only one hit at a time.
- Recall your active Pal once the target enters your chosen health range.
- Do not combine a low-health target with a damage-over-time effect.
- Watch the actual health bar rather than relying on a single damage number.
- For a tough target, retreat and return instead of forcing the final few points while under pressure.
A Pal that reaches zero health is fainted and cannot be caught in that encounter. There is no recovery step that turns a defeated target back into a capture attempt, so prevention matters more than squeezing out one more attack.
Why the rear throw matters
Throwing from behind is both a positioning tactic and a capture modifier. Community guides report a bonus of up to roughly 20%, with the exact amount varying by Pal. The bonus applies only while the target has not noticed you. Once a question mark appears above its head, it has detected you and the rear advantage is reportedly gone, even if you remain physically behind it.
Getting into position without being seen
- Move at a crouch or use terrain to block the Pal’s view when possible.
- Wait for the target to face away before closing the distance.
- Keep your crosshair on the Pal, but do not rush the throw while the detection indicator is active.
- If the Pal turns toward you, stop moving or back away until it resumes a neutral state.
- Throw as soon as you have a clear rear angle; lingering beside a low-health Pal gives it more time to detect you or attack.
On a large target, “behind” means behind its body and facing direction, not merely standing at its side. If the Pal is turning repeatedly, reposition rather than throwing a marginal side shot.

Status effects: useful control with a real risk
Status effects can make a target easier to manage, but damage-over-time effects are dangerous during capture. A burning or poison-like effect may continue draining health after you stop attacking and can kill a Pal before the sphere lands. Avoid applying such effects to a target that is already near your chosen capture threshold.
If a status effect is already active, create distance and monitor the health bar. Do not throw immediately if the effect is likely to remove the last portion of health. The safest capture attempt is made when the Pal is stable, conscious and no continuing damage is ticking.
Permanent capture upgrades
Statue of Power and Lifmunk Effigies
The Statue of Power is the long-term investment for players who catch many Pals. Feeding Lifmunk Effigies to it permanently raises capture rate for all Pals, so the benefit applies to future encounters rather than only the next throw. Community advice says green-glowing Effigies are easier to spot at night, which can make collection less frustrating.
One snippet reports a Statue of Power construction cost of 1 Tech Point, 20 Stone and 10 Paldium Fragments. That cost is not confirmed by an official page in the available evidence, so check the building recipe shown in your current game before reserving materials.

Capture modules
Community guides list a Curve Module and a Sniper Module, each reported to add +2 capture rate. They are described as technology-unlocked items crafted at assembly lines. The exact unlock levels and recipes should be checked against your own Technology menu because the reports do not establish a stable version or complete crafting requirements.
Modules are smaller, repeatable bonuses compared with the Statue of Power. They are useful when you want to improve ordinary capture attempts without spending a higher sphere on every target, but they do not replace the basic sequence of lowering health and avoiding detection.
High-level Pals and bosses
High-level encounters require the same fundamentals with less room for error: use a suitable sphere, reduce health gradually, avoid ongoing damage and take the rear throw when possible. A community guide recommends weakening a difficult or boss-level target, retreating until it calms down, and then sneaking back rather than trying to throw while it is actively attacking.

One article claims Pocketpair’s version 1.0 notes made bosses uncatchable, but the same article reportedly lists trainer catch rates as 100%, which makes it an unreliable basis for a general rule. Check the current patch notes and the behavior of your exact encounter instead of assuming every boss is either catchable or permanently immune.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the displayed capture percentage may mislead you
There has been a documented discrepancy between the number shown on screen and the actual result. Kotaku quoted Pocketpair’s patch notes for version 0.1.4.1: “Although the displayed capture rate probability increased when the capture power was strengthened with Lifmunk Effigies, the capture probability did not actually increase at all due to an internal processing bug.” In other words, the interface could show improvement while the underlying chance failed to change.

The available material also contains a conflicting 2026 guide that says the reported behavior is working as intended. Because those accounts disagree, do not infer a precise probability from the displayed percentage alone. Use the visible rate as a planning aid, but judge upgrades by the current patch notes and actual in-game behavior.
Version differences you should verify
Community sources report that a version 1.0 change reduced the number of captures needed for a Capture Bonus from 12 to 5 and adjusted the capture formula. The claim was not tied to a fetched official page, so the exact trigger and formula are not established here.
The latest build is also reported inconsistently as version 1.0.4, dated September 7, 2026, or version 1.0.5, described as a texture and map-icon hotfix with no catch changes. These conflicting labels are a reason to check the version number shown by your platform and read the corresponding patch notes before relying on an older guide’s sphere values or boss advice.
Common failure cases and fixes
| What happened | Likely cause | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| The sphere breaks immediately. | Target health is too high, sphere tier is too low, or a penalty applies because the sphere is below the Pal’s level. | Lower health further without fainting the Pal and select a tier that matches or exceeds its level. |
| The rear bonus does not appear. | The Pal detected you; a question mark appeared. | Break line of sight, wait for the target to calm down and approach again from behind. |
| The Pal dies while you prepare the throw. | A damage-over-time effect or an active companion continued attacking. | Stop ongoing damage, recall your Pal and use direct, controllable hits only. |
| A boss cannot be caught. | Boss rules may differ by encounter or patch, and community reports conflict. | Check current patch notes and the encounter’s behavior; do not generalize from one guide. |
| The displayed rate rose but catches did not improve. | A historical capture-rate processing bug affected Lifmunk Effigy upgrades. | Confirm that your build includes the relevant fix and treat the display as provisional when sources disagree. |
A resource-efficient capture plan
- Use the lowest sphere tier that matches or exceeds the target’s level, rather than wasting a top-tier sphere on a weak Pal.
- Reserve stronger spheres for targets whose level or health makes lower tiers inefficient.
- Collect Lifmunk Effigies during exploration and feed them to the Statue of Power when available.
- Unlock and craft capture modules once your technology progression supports them.
- For rare or dangerous targets, save before the encounter if your platform and game mode allow it, then practice the health and positioning sequence.
- After a failed attempt, change one variable at a time—health, sphere tier, approach or upgrade—so you can identify what improved the result.
Quick checklist before every difficult throw
- The Pal is alive and at low, stable health.
- No damage-over-time effect is still ticking.
- Your active companion will not deliver another uncontrolled hit.
- The sphere tier is appropriate for the Pal’s level.
- The target has not noticed you; no question mark is showing.
- You have a clear rear angle and enough space to retreat.
- You have considered whether a permanent Statue of Power or module bonus is worth applying before spending more spheres.
What to remember
Successful Pal capture is a repeatable setup: weaken without fainting, prevent continuing damage, use a sphere tier that is not underpowered for the target, and throw from behind before detection. Lifmunk Effigies and capture modules improve the whole process over time, but their exact values and even some high-level rules have changed or been disputed across versions. For any number that matters—sphere power, unlock level, recipe, boss eligibility or displayed probability—trust the Technology menu and patch notes for the build you are actually playing.
