Remove pills carefully with a sweater comb rather than pulling them off. Care varies by fiber, construction, and brand, so there is no single washing recipe for every sweater.
Check the care label before washing
The American Cleaning Institute’s instruction is simple: “Read and follow the care label instructions:” Woolmark likewise advises checking the sewn-in label because wool garments can have different permitted washing and drying methods. Pay attention to guidance for blends, trims, and embellishments as well as the main fabric.

Brand advice can differ even for cashmere. FTC Cashmere permits a cold wool machine cycle for its garments, while Porsche Design says its cashmere should only be hand washed and only when visibly stained. Those are garment-specific directions, not universal rules; follow the label on your sweater.
Wash only as the label allows
Airing a sweater can be enough between wears. When it needs cleaning, address visible soil or stains using a method the label permits. Avoid unnecessary washing, which adds handling and friction.

- If machine washing is allowed: Use the label’s settings. The American Cleaning Institute recommends cold water when the label does not specify a temperature, and a detergent formulated for delicates. A mesh laundry bag is an option for a label-permitted gentle machine wash; it does not make a hand-wash-only sweater machine washable.
- If hand washing is required: Gently swish the sweater in water rather than rubbing or wringing it. Rinse, roll it in a towel, and press gently to remove excess water.
- For detergent: Choose a wool or delicates detergent only when home washing is allowed by the garment’s care instructions.
Why sweaters pill—and how to remove pills
Pills are small fuzzy balls that form on a knit’s surface. FTC Cashmere describes pilling as a natural characteristic of knitwear caused by friction among fine fibers. Color, spinning, knit tightness, washing, and wear can all affect how much pilling occurs. Pilling does not automatically mean a sweater is defective, and the available guidance does not establish a reliable numeric threshold or a way to guarantee a sweater will never pill.
Remove existing pills gently
Lay the sweater flat and use a cashmere or sweater comb carefully in the direction of the knitting. Do not pluck pills from delicate knits; pulling can disturb the surrounding fibers. A comb is for removing pills that have formed, not for preventing all future pilling.

Reduce avoidable friction
Follow the garment’s washing instructions and handle the knit gently. FTC Cashmere advises turning its knits inside out before washing. This may reduce friction on the outer surface, but it does not eliminate pilling.
Dry wet sweaters flat to protect their shape
Water adds weight to a knit, so hanging a wet sweater can stretch or distort it. For wool sweaters, Woolmark recommends laying the garment on a pale, lint-free towel, gently shaping it, and drying it flat away from direct sunlight. A flat mesh drying screen can support the garment and improve convenience. Avoid drying on a line, near direct heat, or on a radiator; follow the label if it specifically permits another method.

Some machine-washable sweaters may be tumble dried on low, but only if the care label allows it. Hand-wash-only sweaters should be dried flat.
Reshape with care
If a wool garment has a limited out-of-shape area, such as a shoulder hump from hanger use, Woolmark suggests dipping that area in warm water at 30°C to 40°C, gently massaging it, and then allowing it to dry. This is a limited reshaping option, not a guarantee of recovery. Woolmark notes that severe felting after machine washing contrary to a dry-clean-only or hand-wash instruction may not be reversible.

For a soft hand-wash-only sweater, the American Cleaning Institute suggests tracing its outline before washing as a blocking pattern. This optional step can help guide reshaping if you are comfortable doing it.
Fold sweaters for everyday and seasonal storage
Fold sweaters rather than hanging them: hanging can stretch knitwear. Before putting a garment away for a season, clean it, since soils may attract insects and stains can darken over time. Store it folded in a cool, dark, dry, well-ventilated place. Avoid plastic bags or bins that can trap moisture.

FTC Cashmere recommends storing knits flat and suggests natural moth repellents such as lavender or cedarwood; it also recommends a cloth bag for longer storage. These are optional approaches, not substitutes for keeping garments clean and dry.
