Clean a smart contact lens only according to the instructions for that exact device and the advice of the eye care professional who fitted or prescribed it. There is no established cleaning routine that is safe for every electronic or sensor-enabled lens. Ordinary contact lens hygiene is essential, but a familiar solution, case, rubbing method, or replacement schedule is not automatically compatible with a smart lens.
Until you have device-specific instructions, don’t guess, substitute a standard solution, or wear the lens in a way its instructions do not expressly allow. The guidance below explains the general safety rules, what differs between ordinary lens-care systems, and what to do when you cannot confirm a smart lens’s requirements.

Why smart contact lenses need device-specific care
A smart contact lens is still a medical device worn on the eye. Its materials and any embedded electronics or sensors may impose care requirements that differ from those for ordinary soft or rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses. The sources cited here do not establish a universal smart-lens cleaning recipe or a currently marketed smart-lens model with a matching patient care label. That is not proof that no smart lens exists anywhere; it means you should verify the exact product instructions rather than infer compatibility from a product category.

Project announcements also need careful interpretation. On January 6, 2023, Mojo Vision CEO Drew Perkins wrote, “This change means that Mojo Vision has also made the difficult decision to decelerate work on Mojo Lens.” That statement describes the company’s project at that time; it does not establish the current status of the entire smart-lens field.
What to verify before cleaning or wearing one
Find the exact lens name and model, then use its instructions for use and the guidance from the eye care professional who prescribed or fitted it. If the care label is missing, unclear, or doesn’t address a situation you’re facing, contact the manufacturer or your eye care professional before improvising. Don’t assume that instructions for another smart lens—or for ordinary contacts—apply.

- Care solution: Confirm the named product or care system is approved for this lens. Different systems are made for different lens types, and some require separate cleaning, rinsing, and disinfection steps.
- Case and handling: Check whether the lens requires a particular case, cleaning method, storage conditions, or handling precautions.
- Wear and replacement schedule: Follow the lens’s specific limits for wearing, removal, and replacement. Don’t sleep in it unless your eye care professional has directed you to do so.
- Water exposure: Follow the device’s instructions for accidental contact with water. If they do not address it, ask the eye care professional rather than assuming the lens can be cleaned and worn as usual.
Do not buy a solution or accessory on the assumption that it fits an unspecified smart lens. No product with verified smart-lens compatibility is established here.

General contact lens hygiene that still matters
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says 45 million people in the United States wear contact lenses, a figure presented on its contact lens overview page in 2025. Whether a lens is ordinary or smart, careful handling helps reduce preventable contamination and eye-infection risks. These general practices do not override the specific lens instructions.

- Wash and dry your hands. Wash thoroughly with soap and water, then dry completely before handling a lens. Avoid touching lenses with wet or dirty hands.
- Use only the specified care system. Follow both the lens instructions and the care-product label. Never top off used solution with fresh solution or reuse solution that has already been used.
- Keep water away. Don’t rinse or store lenses in tap, bottled, distilled, lake, or ocean water. Remove contacts before showering, swimming, or using a hot tub. The CDC’s guidance, updated May 27, 2025, states: “Contact lenses and water are a bad combination—even when showering, swimming, or using a hot tub.”
- Follow the wear schedule. Don’t sleep in lenses unless your eye care professional has directed you to. Observe the lens-specific wear and replacement schedule.
- Maintain the case as directed. Don’t clean a case with water. CDC guidance for ordinary contact lens care recommends cleaning the case with solution, storing it upside down with caps off after use, and replacing it at least every three months. For a smart lens, follow any more specific device instructions.
How ordinary lens-care systems differ
These are distinctions in standard contact lens care, not recommendations for an unspecified smart lens. The right system depends on lens type and the instructions for the particular lens and solution. The CDC’s cleaning guidance was updated May 27, 2025; the FDA’s solution information was accessed October 9, 2026.
| Care system or product | What it does or requires | Key caution |
|---|---|---|
| Multipurpose solution for soft lenses | For a soft lens when its instructions call for this system, CDC advises rubbing and rinsing the lens and storing it in fresh solution each time it is removed. | Do not top off or mix old solution with fresh solution. Do not assume a soft-lens product is suitable for an RGP or smart lens. |
| Separate cleaner and disinfectant steps | Some routines require different products or steps to clean and disinfect. Follow the sequence and labels for the specific system. | A cleaner may clean without disinfecting; additional steps may be required. |
| Saline | May be used to rinse when directed by the care system or lens instructions. | Saline does not disinfect lenses and is not a substitute for disinfecting solution. |
| Hydrogen peroxide system | Requires the special case supplied with the product and the full neutralization time stated on its label. | Never put unneutralized peroxide in the eye or use it to rinse a lens immediately before insertion. Misuse can cause burning, irritation, or eye damage. |
| Rigid gas permeable (RGP) system | Uses care systems that differ from soft-lens systems. | Do not assume a product made for one lens type is appropriate for another. |
These distinctions are why “contact lens solution” is not a single interchangeable product category. A system that is appropriate for one conventional lens may still be unsuitable for a smart lens. The lens instructions, care-product label, and eye care professional’s advice must agree.

What to do if a lens touches water
Water can deform soft contact lenses and expose the eyes to germs, including Acanthamoeba. Don’t rinse or store a lens in any kind of water, and remove lenses before water activities. If water touches a lens, the CDC advises removing it promptly and either discarding it or cleaning and disinfecting it overnight before wearing it again. For a smart lens, follow more specific device instructions if provided; if the required response is unclear, ask your eye care professional before wearing it again.
When to stop wearing a lens and get help
Remove the lens and consult an eye care professional if you develop redness, irritation, pain, or a change in vision. FDA guidance identifies these as reasons to remove contact lenses and seek professional advice. Don’t try to solve a new symptom by changing solutions or cleaning the lens more aggressively.
Best Value
If you cannot identify the lens’s exact care system, stop handling or wearing it until you can confirm the instructions. This is especially important if you are unsure whether a product is compatible, whether water exposure requires discarding the lens, or whether a peroxide system has fully neutralized.
