Check the jacket’s care label and the manufacturer’s instructions for its exact model before cleaning it. “Stone-coated” and “mineral-coated” do not identify one standard fabric finish, so a method that is safe for one waterproof shell—or a stone-washed garment—may damage another. If instructions are unclear, avoid soaking, heat, solvents and coating treatments until the maker or a qualified repair specialist advises you.
Start with the exact jacket’s care instructions
Look inside the jacket for its care label, then check the manufacturer’s product page or aftercare guidance for the same model. Stone Island says to follow the garment’s internal-label instructions strictly, and GORE-TEX likewise directs customers to the garment maker’s washing instructions. Those instructions take priority over general advice for waterproof shells.

If the label or maker’s guidance does not clearly permit a cleaning method, do not assume it is safe. The available guidance does not establish a universal wash temperature, detergent, or cleaning method for an unidentified mineral-coated jacket.

If the label permits washing
Follow its specified method, temperature, detergent and drying instructions exactly. A mild detergent intended for technical outerwear is one possible category only when washing is allowed: Patagonia recommends mild technical-gear detergent for waterproof jackets, but that does not confirm compatibility with every mineral coating. Do not add a soak, stain solvent, tumble drying, ironing or waterproofing treatment unless the jacket’s maker permits it.

- TX.Direct Wash-In: High performance waterproofer designed to enhance performance and revitalize the breathability of waterproof clothing, keeping you warmer and drier
- Easy to use wash-in solutions clean effectively, restore water repellency and revive breathability by removing water attracting residues from the surface
- Nikwax products are PFAS-free, water based, non-persistent, and contain no optical brighteners or added scent; machine wash safe
If the label permits spot cleaning or professional cleaning
Use only the method and products the manufacturer specifies. Do not substitute a solvent or stain treatment based on advice for another fabric. If the instructions are missing or ambiguous, ask the maker or a qualified garment-care specialist before proceeding.
Remove accessories only when instructed
Detach accessories before cleaning only if the garment’s instructions say to. Stone Island warns that its removable logo badge may transfer color, but that brand-specific note does not establish how accessories on another jacket should be handled.

Avoid common sources of coating or fabric damage
- Do not soak it unless the maker explicitly allows soaking. Stone Island’s outerwear guidance advises against it.
- Keep oils and alcohol-based products away from the fabric. Stone Island warns that perfumes, cosmetics, hand sanitizers, oils and alcohol-based products may affect fabric or leave unremovable stains. This is its guidance for its own garments, but avoiding unnecessary contact is a sensible precaution when the coating is unknown.
- Do not assume heat is safe. Columbia warns that heat or dryer friction can harm the inner coating on its coated waterproof jackets. That warning is specific to Columbia’s garments; use the unknown jacket’s label to determine whether any heat or tumble drying is permitted.
- Do not apply a reproofing product without approval. Guidance for waterproof jackets does not establish that a treatment is suitable for a separate mineral-coated surface.
Do not confuse mineral coating with stone washing
Stone-washed describes a garment treatment associated with a worn appearance; it is not evidence of a mineral coating. A clothing-care guide advises washing stone-washed garments separately the first time because they may lose a little color. That advice does not establish care for a jacket with a mineral or stone surface layer, so do not transfer it automatically.

Patagonia’s detergent guidance concerns waterproof jackets, while Columbia’s heat-and-friction warning concerns Columbia coated waterproof jackets. When to ask for help
Contact the garment maker or a qualified repair specialist if the care instructions are unclear, the coating is damaged, or cleaning could affect the finish. Stone Island offers aftercare for its own garments and notes that not all repairs are possible; its service should not be assumed to apply to other brands.
