Sapphire crystal is highly scratch-resistant, but it is not scratch-proof or impact-proof. Keep it away from abrasive grit and hard knocks, clean it gently, and follow the care and water-resistance instructions for your specific watch. A mark that does not wipe away may involve the crystal, an anti-reflective coating, or other damage, so have persistent marks assessed rather than trying an abrasive polish.
What sapphire crystal can—and cannot—resist
Sapphire is much more resistant to scratches than mineral or acrylic watch glass, but hard materials can still mark it. Rado gives its sapphire crystal a hardness rating of 2,500 Vickers and warns that it is not indestructible; the page does not state a year for that figure. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) rates sapphire at 9 on the Mohs scale; its page likewise does not state a year for the figure. These scales describe hardness, not immunity to damage.

Rado identifies nail files, granite, and sand as possible scratch risks because they can contain particles as hard as or harder than sapphire. Keep the watch away from loose grit and abrasive surfaces, especially when setting it down or cleaning it. Rado’s material guidance and GIA’s sapphire care guide provide the hardness context.
Hardness also does not make the crystal impact-proof. A severe blow can chip or break sapphire, and a shock can affect the watch’s movement or seals even if the crystal looks intact.

How to clean the crystal safely
- Start dry. Wipe the crystal and case gently with a clean, soft cloth. A lint-free cloth is a good choice; Swarovski specifically recommends one for its watches, while CENTURY and Maurice Lacroix advise using a soft cloth for drying.
- Check the manual before adding water. Confirm the exact model’s water-resistance rating and cleaning instructions. If the watch has a leather or delicate strap, do not wet it unless its care instructions permit it.
- Use soapy water only when the model allows it. Some manufacturers permit soapy-water cleaning for water-resistant cases and metal or rubber bracelets. Follow the watch’s specific instructions, then dry it with a soft cloth. This is not a universal method for every watch or strap.
Seiko cautions against holding even a water-resistant watch directly under a faucet: water pressure may force water inside. See Seiko’s care guidance, and use a soft or lint-free cleaning cloth rather than an abrasive product.
Prevent scratches, chemical damage, and impacts
- Keep the crystal clear of sand, grit, granite, nail files, and other abrasive materials.
- Avoid hard knocks, thermal shocks, and sudden extreme temperature changes.
- Keep solvents, detergents, perfume, cosmetics, and similar chemicals away from the watch; they may harm the case, strap, bracelet, or seals.
- Keep the crown and pushers in the positions specified by the manufacturer. Do not operate controls underwater unless the maker explicitly permits it.
These precautions protect more than the crystal. Water resistance depends on the watch’s seals and condition, not on whether its crystal is sapphire. A watch can lose water resistance as seals age or after a shock or deformation, with no obvious outward sign. Patek Philippe’s care recommendations and Swatch’s product-care advice describe model-dependent care precautions.

After salt-water or chlorinated-pool exposure, rinse with fresh water only if the watch is designed for that exposure and its manual allows rinsing. Do not assume sapphire crystal makes the watch safe to submerge.

A visible mark does not, by itself, establish that the sapphire is scratched. It might be residue, damage to an anti-reflective treatment, or a chip or other impact damage. Maurice Lacroix notes that anti-reflective treatment on sapphire can show marks in everyday wear, while Swarovski warns that impacts can damage crystals. The inspected manufacturer guidance does not offer a universal way to diagnose a mark from appearance alone.

Try a gentle wipe with a clean, soft cloth. If the mark remains, or you see a chip, crack, edge damage, or possible coating damage, ask the watch brand or an authorized watchmaker to assess it. Do not use polishing paste or a household abrasive treatment as a default fix: the manufacturer guidance here does not establish a universal DIY sapphire-polishing method. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if the crystal is chipped, cracked, or loose; if condensation appears; after a significant impact; or whenever water resistance is uncertain. A damaged crystal or compromised seal can put the movement at risk. Have the watch assessed after a hard knock even if the exterior looks fine.
Water-resistance checks are especially model- and brand-dependent. Seiko recommends regular checks, while CENTURY recommends annual checks by an authorized service center. Those are their respective recommendations, not a universal interval for every watch. Follow the guidance for your model and arrange a check after a significant impact or repair. See CENTURY’s care guide and Seiko’s care FAQ.
