To capture a website screenshot through an MCP server in GitHub Actions, the workflow must run a browser, start the Playwright MCP server, connect an MCP client that calls its browser tools, and upload the resulting image as an artifact. Starting the server alone does not take a screenshot: a client must invoke its tools. If MCP interoperability is not needed, direct Playwright code is a simpler CI option.
How the MCP screenshot workflow fits together
GitHub Actions runs the job. The Playwright MCP server exposes browser automation tools, and an MCP client connects to that server and calls them. Playwright MCP supports interaction using structured accessibility snapshots and provides a separate tool for taking a visual screenshot (Playwright MCP documentation).

The pieces to arrange are therefore:
- A Node.js environment and browser installation or first-use download.
- A Playwright MCP server started in headless mode for CI.
- An MCP client process or script that can connect to the server and invoke its tools.
- A predictable screenshot path, followed by an artifact upload step.
The Playwright setup documentation describes configuring a compatible MCP client to launch the server with npx and @playwright/mcp@latest. It does not provide a ready-made GitHub Actions action that handles the complete client-and-server orchestration. The workflow below is consequently a scaffold: you must supply a client invocation compatible with your chosen MCP client.
Configure the runtime and MCP server
Requirements and headless mode
The documented client setup requires Node.js 20 or newer and a compatible MCP client. The browser downloads on first use. The Playwright MCP server is headed by default; pass --headless for a CI runner without a visible browser window (Playwright MCP setup and installation).

}This is client configuration, not a GitHub Actions workflow. Your client must read or implement an equivalent configuration, launch the server, and invoke its tools. The client’s invocation command and configuration-file format depend on the client you choose; the Playwright server setup does not prescribe one universal CI client command.
Pin versions for repeatable runs
The quick-start configuration uses @latest, which tracks the latest published package rather than a fixed version. For reproducibility, pin and review the Playwright MCP package version and GitHub Action versions you use. The sample upload step below follows GitHub’s documented artifact pattern and uses actions/upload-artifact@v4; confirm and update action versions as part of your workflow maintenance.

Navigate to the page and take a screenshot
Once connected, use the browser navigation tool to open the target URL, then call Playwright MCP’s browser_take_screenshot tool. Its documented options include a filename, image type, full-page capture, and scale. If you omit a filename, it saves an automatically named file in the output directory. Set a predictable filename and location in the client tool call so the workflow can upload the expected file (Playwright MCP tool documentation).

GitHub Actions workflow scaffold
This workflow shows the runner setup, a placeholder for your MCP client’s actual invocation, and the artifact upload. Replace the placeholder with the command and configuration for the client you use. The example assumes your client writes the screenshot into screenshots/.

In a working workflow, remove the explanatory comments and replace YOUR_MCP_CLIENT_COMMAND with that client’s documented command and configuration.

Upload and retrieve the screenshot artifact
actions/upload-artifact can upload a file or directory so it remains available after the runner ends. The example uploads the entire screenshots/ directory under the artifact name website-screenshots. GitHub documents downloading artifacts and configuring retention; the effective maximum retention is subject to repository, organization, or enterprise settings (GitHub Actions artifacts documentation).

Protect workflow permissions
A screenshot-only job generally needs no broad repository write access. The sample explicitly grants contents: read; adjust permissions only if another step genuinely requires them. When a workflow or job explicitly lists token permissions, scopes that are not listed are set to none. GitHub also documents that workflows triggered by pull requests from forks ordinarily have write permissions reduced to read-only, so do not rely on write access for contributed-code runs (GitHub token permissions documentation).
Choose MCP or direct Playwright

Playwright’s CI guide shows the direct approach: install dependencies with npm ci, install browsers with npx playwright install --with-deps, run the test command, and archive the report. That test command does not invoke the MCP server (Playwright CI guide).
Troubleshoot common failures
- The server starts, but no screenshot appears: Starting an MCP server only exposes tools. Check that an MCP client is running, connects to the server, navigates to the page, and calls
browser_take_screenshot. - The client cannot connect: Confirm the client launches the server with the configured command and arguments, and that its server lifecycle is managed for the duration of the tool call. In CI, use
--headless. - The browser is missing: The Playwright MCP setup says the browser downloads on first use. Allow that initial download to complete; for direct Playwright CI, use the browser installation step shown in Playwright’s CI guide.
- The upload step finds no files: Match the screenshot tool’s output directory to the artifact path, set an explicit filename, and check that the capture completed before upload.
- The screenshot has a different name than expected: The tool automatically names the file when no filename is supplied. Set a filename explicitly and have the client target the intended output directory.
- A workflow triggered by a fork cannot write: Fork pull-request workflows ordinarily receive read-only rather than write permissions. Avoid depending on write access for the screenshot job, or design any required write operation around GitHub’s documented permission model.
