For a sharp presentation screenshot, choose the page area you need, set the browser to the desktop or mobile layout you want to show, and capture at device-pixel scale when you need extra raster dimensions. Then check the saved image at its actual size in the slide deck. More pixels can make an image larger, but they cannot restore detail missing from a website’s source images or make tiny text legible.
Choose the right screenshot for the slide
Start with the point the slide needs to make. Browser tools can capture the visible viewport, a whole scrollable page, or a selected element. Those are different views, not merely different quality settings. Playwright describes these capture scopes in its screenshot documentation.

Do not squeeze a long page onto a slide simply to show that it is complete. Capture useful sections separately, or focus on the page component that supports your point.
Set the layout and viewport before capture
Choose whether the slide should show a desktop or mobile layout, then set the browser width before taking the screenshot. Responsive pages can rearrange or hide content at different widths, so capturing at the intended width is more faithful than taking a desktop screenshot and cropping it later to imitate a phone.

Chrome DevTools device mode provides viewport controls and device simulation; its documentation also describes viewport and full-size screenshot actions: Simulate mobile devices with device mode. For repeatable comparisons, record the viewport dimensions and use them again on each capture.
Understand resolution: CSS pixels versus device pixels
“High resolution” does not correspond to one universal setting. In Playwright, scale: "css" produces one image pixel per CSS pixel, while scale: "device" produces one image pixel per device pixel. - Use CSS scale when an output pixel for each CSS pixel is sufficient and a smaller file is useful.
- Consider device scale when you need more raster pixels for a slide image and the capture environment supports a higher device-pixel ratio.
- Inspect the result in the deck. A larger pixel count does not make small interface text readable at a small displayed size, nor can it add detail absent from the site’s original assets.
The cited documentation does not set a universal minimum pixel count or slide dimension. Choose based on the deck’s actual layout and inspect the image at the size viewers will see.
Capture manually with browser developer tools
Chrome
- Open the page and set the window or device-mode viewport to the layout you want to present.
- Open Chrome DevTools and use its screenshot command for the visible viewport or the full-size page, as appropriate. Chrome documents both actions in its device mode guide.
- Save the resulting image, place it in the presentation, and inspect it at its intended slide size. If the full-page image is too tall, capture a shorter section instead.
Firefox
- Open the page at the desired desktop or mobile width.
- Use Firefox’s screenshot controls to capture the page or a selected element. The exact controls and capture options are described in Mozilla’s Firefox screenshot documentation.
- Check the saved image in the deck; crop or recapture if important details become too small.
Manual capture is convenient for a one-off slide. For repeated captures, use the same browser and setup each time or automate the capture so the scope and scale are explicit.

Automate repeatable captures with Playwright
Playwright lets you choose a viewport, capture the viewport or full page, clip a region, target an element, and select an output format and scale. The example below captures a full-page PNG at device-pixel scale. It uses Chromium; a focused viewport or element may be a better choice for a presentation slide.
Install and run
- Install Node.js, then create a project and add Playwright:

With device scale, the resulting raster dimensions depend on the capture environment; full-page height also depends on the page.

Change the capture scope
- Viewport: remove
fullPage: trueto capture only the visible viewport. - Element: select a locator and call its screenshot method, for example

Full-page capture can create a very tall image. For a deck, capture a viewport, element, or a few relevant clips if the full image would have to be reduced until its text is illegible.

Make repeated screenshots comparable
For a before-and-after slide or a sequence of captures, hold the viewport, browser, operating system, browser version, settings, and headed or headless mode constant where possible. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode: Visual comparisons.

Common problems and fixes
- The text looks too small on the slide: the page may have been scaled down to fit. Capture a viewport or element, split a long page into sections, or enlarge the image on the slide. More capture pixels alone do not fix a layout that is too small to read.
- The screenshot is not larger at device scale: device scale maps output pixels to the device’s pixel ratio. Check the capture environment and output dimensions; the setting does not guarantee a particular multiplier on every setup.
- The page is cut off: confirm whether you captured the viewport or the full page. Use full-page capture for content below the fold, or use an element or clip when only part of the page is needed.
- The screenshot differs between runs: keep the browser and rendering environment consistent, as well as the viewport and settings. Rendering can vary across environments.
- Playwright times out waiting for network idle: some pages keep network activity open. If that happens, use a different documented navigation wait condition and, when needed, wait for a relevant selector before taking the screenshot. Do not assume the page is visually ready merely because a fixed delay elapsed.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use PNG or JPEG for presentation screenshots?
PNG is a suitable default for interface screenshots with text and sharp edges. JPEG is another documented screenshot output format; choose it when that format better fits your presentation workflow.
Can a screenshot make a low-resolution website image sharper?
No. A larger screenshot can preserve more pixels from the browser rendering, but it cannot recover detail that the page’s source image or rendered content does not contain.
Is full-page capture always best for showing an entire website?
No. It preserves below-the-fold content, but a very tall image can become unreadable when placed on a slide. Use separate sections or a focused capture when the audience needs to read details.
