Choose a capture method for the batch
Playwright is a good fit when you need a repeatable script, custom interactions, or programmatic handling of failures and metadata. Its Page API can navigate to a URL and save a screenshot to a file or buffer, including full-page captures. The Playwright screenshot guide describes its screenshot options.

Decide what each screenshot must show
- Viewport: Capture the visible screen when the report compares initial presentation or above-the-fold content.
- Full page: Capture the scrollable page when below-the-fold material matters. Long pages create tall images, so check that text and details remain legible in the report.
- Element: Capture a particular chart, panel, or component when the surrounding page is not relevant.
Choose output format and resolution to match the evidence you need. Playwright’s CLI documentation describes PNG, JPEG, and WebP, and distinguishes CSS-pixel output from device-pixel capture. Higher-resolution output can improve legibility but also increases image dimensions. Review sample files at their intended report size before processing the complete URL list.
Build an auditable batch workflow
- Prepare the URL list. Keep one requested URL per record, and decide how to handle duplicates or URLs that redirect.
- Fix the capture procedure. Select viewport, full-page, or element capture; output format; viewport dimensions; and device scale before running the batch.
- Keep the environment consistent. Use the same browser, browser version, operating environment, viewport, device scale, and capture procedure for every page. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; its visual comparison guide recommends the same environment as the baseline.
- Use unique, attributable filenames. Include a stable identifier from the URL list, such as a sequence number or sanitized hostname, and avoid names that overwrite earlier captures.
- Save a companion manifest. Record at least the requested URL, final page URL if known, capture time, filename, and outcome. This is practical workflow advice rather than a manifest format prescribed by Playwright.
- Run a representative sample first. Inspect images and manifest entries for redirects, blank output, unexpected page states, or unreadable content before scaling up. This is a prudent operational check, not a guarantee that every failure can be detected automatically.
- Review exceptions after the batch. Investigate failed or unexpected results rather than assuming that every requested URL yielded valid evidence.
Keep a record of capture date and settings with the image set. Screenshots document a page’s appearance at capture time; by themselves they do not establish authorship, publication date, accuracy, or whether the page remains available. In the report, cite the original page as well as identifying the screenshot and its capture date.

Run the batch with Playwright
The following Python example reads a plain-text file named urls.txt, with one URL per line, and saves viewport screenshots plus a CSV manifest. Install Playwright and its Chromium browser first with python -m pip install playwright and python -m playwright install chromium. Save the script as capture_batch.py and run python capture_batch.py.

The script uses one page and browser for the list, gives each URL a distinct filename, records exceptions rather than stopping at the first failed navigation, and flushes the manifest after each result. It waits for the page’s load event; that does not guarantee that every site’s late-loading content, animation, or lazy image is ready. If the report depends on such content, use a site-appropriate readiness condition and verify it in sample captures.
Common batch problems and fixes
- Navigation times out: The page may be slow, unreachable, or waiting on resources. Check the URL and network access, raise the timeout only when justified, and record the failure rather than treating it as a successful capture.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: Confirm the page actually loaded and that the chosen wait condition matches the target. For dynamic pages, wait for a meaningful selector or other site-specific readiness condition; inspect a sample before rerunning the batch.
- Images or content below the fold are missing: Viewport capture does not include the whole page. Use full-page capture if the report requires it, and check whether lazy-loaded content appears in the resulting image.
- Images differ unexpectedly between runs: Compare browser version, operating system, headless mode, device scale, viewport, and other settings. Rendering can vary across environments, so keep them fixed for comparisons.
- One file replaces another: Make filenames unique, for example by combining a sequence number and URL-derived identifier, and check the output directory before rerunning.
- The batch stops or the manifest is incomplete: Handle errors per URL, write an outcome for every attempted capture, and flush or safely close the manifest so earlier results remain recorded.
- Text is too small in the report: Reconsider viewport dimensions or device-pixel scale, then inspect the saved image at its final display size. Higher resolution increases image dimensions and may increase storage needs.
