In a normal Windows 10 or Windows 11 virtual desktop, press Windows+Shift+S, choose a snip mode, select the visible website, then edit and save the image in Snipping Tool. If the result is black, incomplete, or contains only the browser frame, the page may be rendered on your local endpoint by Citrix Browser Content Redirection (BCR), not inside the VDI. In that case, use the Citrix-supported capture path available in your company’s deployment or ask your administrator to enable it.
Choose the capture path that matches where the page is rendered
A VDI screenshot problem is usually a rendering-location problem, not a keyboard problem. The capture tool must run where the pixels are produced.

The BCR behavior described here is Citrix-specific. Other VDI products can use different redirection and capture mechanisms; consult your platform administrator rather than assuming the same limitation applies.
Capture a visible website with Windows Snipping Tool
- Open the website in the Windows session and wait until the content you need is visible.
- Press Windows+Shift+S. Windows displays the snipping overlay.
- Choose a mode: rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen snip.
- Drag around the page content. A rectangular selection is usually best because it excludes unrelated desktop areas.
- Select the notification or open Snipping Tool from the Start menu to review the result.
- Use the editing controls if needed, then save the image in the required location. The snip is also copied to the clipboard for pasting into an approved application.
Snipping Tool supports Windows 10 and Windows 11. A managed desktop can change shortcut behavior or prevent saving, so an administrator’s policy takes precedence.

When a full-screen clipboard image is enough
Press Print Screen to place a static image of the entire screen on the clipboard. Paste it into an approved editor or document and save it there. The exact Print Screen behavior depends on Windows configuration, so use Windows+Shift+S when you need a predictable selection or a saved Snipping Tool file.
Capture a window instead of a page rectangle
Window snip mode can include the browser window’s borders and controls. Use it when those controls are useful evidence; otherwise, select only the webpage to avoid exposing tabs, addresses, account names or other sensitive information.
Why a Citrix screenshot can be black or show only the browser frame
With Citrix Browser Content Redirection enabled, the browser window may be displayed in the remote session while the actual webpage is rendered on the endpoint. A screenshot utility running inside the VDI then has no webpage pixels to capture. It can produce a black region, an empty rectangle or only the browser frame.
This is expected BCR behavior, not proof that the site failed to load. Check the result while the page is visible locally and compare it with a capture made from the endpoint, subject to your organization’s rules.

Signs that redirected content is involved
- The browser chrome appears but the page body is missing.
- The same page is visible normally, yet every VDI-side capture omits it.
- A capture works for ordinary remote applications but fails for browser video or redirected sites.
- Your administrator confirms that Citrix Browser Content Redirection is enabled.
Citrix-supported capture options
Citrix documents a Citrix Snipping Tool that can capture overlay and redirected content in applicable Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops deployments. It is not universal or automatically enabled. Availability depends on the product version, Workspace app, policies and administrator configuration.
What to ask your administrator
- Is Browser Content Redirection enabled for this published desktop or application?
- Is the Citrix Snipping Tool deployed and allowed for my user group?
- Are the screenshot and redirected-content policies enabled?
- Which Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, VDA and Workspace app versions are installed?
- Is capture restricted by company security policy or by the website’s data classification?
Citrix documentation describes VDA-side screenshot capture for redirected content beginning with Citrix Workspace app for Windows 2603, while the Citrix Virtual Desktop Assistant documentation covers Virtual Apps and Desktops 7 2607 LTSR. Treat those as version-qualified documentation points, not a promise that your environment supports the feature. Have your administrator verify the exact deployed editions and policies.
Move the image between the VDI and your endpoint
Capturing an image and transferring it are separate operations. Windows App can redirect clipboard content, including images, text and files, when the organization enables that feature. If you can paste text but not an image, or if nothing crosses the session boundary, clipboard or file redirection may be disabled.
- Save the screenshot inside the VDI first when possible.
- Use only your organization-approved clipboard, drive, folder or file-transfer route.
- If transfer is blocked, contact the help desk rather than attempting to bypass the policy.
- Remove confidential data or obtain approval before moving the image to a personal device or external service.
Troubleshooting checklist
The shortcut does nothing
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and use its New button.
- Try the shortcut while the VDI window has focus.
- Ask whether keyboard shortcuts are intercepted by the local remote-desktop client or blocked by policy.
The screenshot is black or blank
- Confirm that the page is visible before capturing.
- Test a simple locally rendered page. If it works, the failing site may be redirected or protected.
- Ask whether Citrix BCR is active and whether the Citrix Snipping Tool policy is enabled.
- Do not disable security controls or attempt to circumvent a company restriction.
Only the browser frame appears
This strongly suggests that the webpage is rendered on the endpoint under BCR. A normal VDI-side capture cannot necessarily see those pixels. Request the Citrix-supported redirected-content capture route or follow your administrator’s approved endpoint procedure.

The image captures the wrong monitor or window
Use rectangular or window snip mode instead of full screen, and verify which display contains the VDI session. Multi-monitor layouts can make a full-screen capture include the local desktop or another display.
The screenshot looks outdated
Wait for the page to finish loading before pressing Windows+Shift+S. For dynamic pages, scroll to the required state and capture each region separately if a single visible viewport cannot contain the whole page.
The capture is correct but cannot be pasted or saved
Check available storage, application permissions and clipboard/file-redirection policy. Save inside the VDI first, then use the approved transfer mechanism. A successful capture does not imply that cross-boundary transfer is permitted.

- Rendering: A local Snipping Tool reflects exactly what the user sees, including transient overlays. An API capture is repeatable but may require explicit waits, authentication headers or cookies.
- Privacy: Keep regulated or confidential pages inside approved systems. Do not upload private VDI URLs or credentials to an external API unless your organization authorizes it.
- Transfer: Clipboard policy is independent of screenshot success. Plan an approved storage and handoff path.

Does enabling clipboard redirection fix a missing webpage in the screenshot?
No. Clipboard redirection controls transfer after capture; it does not make endpoint-rendered pixels visible to a VDI-side screenshot tool.
Is this workflow the same for VMware or other VDI platforms?
No universal behavior is established here. Rendering and capture policies differ by vendor, so check the documentation and configuration for your platform.
