Set the timezone on the browser context that renders the page, then capture the page in the state your test is meant to check. In Playwright Test, configure timezoneId; set locale separately if localized formatting matters. Browser emulation does not change the timezone of your test runner, server, database, or remote API.
Configure timezone emulation in Playwright
Playwright’s timezoneId option controls the browser timezone. Set it in the shared configuration to use it across a project or suite. This example also pins the locale and viewport so those inputs are explicit:

});Playwright documents timezone and locale emulation at playwright.dev/docs/emulation. Use a named zone such as Europe/Paris when testing a place-specific scenario rather than encoding a fixed offset; daylight-saving transitions can make a fixed offset differ from a city’s local time.

Scope the setting to a single test
For an isolated test, use test.use() in the relevant test file or describe scope:

});Choose a locale that matches the formatting requirement; timezone and locale are separate inputs. For example, the timezone influences local-time interpretation, while locale can influence language and date conventions.
Generate and review the visual baseline
toHaveScreenshot() saves a reference image on its first execution and compares later runs with it. Review that first image and deliberately check it into the project. To update snapshots after a real, reviewed UI change, use Playwright’s documented snapshot update workflow rather than accepting unexplained mismatches. Its comparison options include maxDiffPixels; a capture stylesheet can suppress intentionally volatile regions where appropriate. See Playwright’s screenshot comparison documentation.

Make the rendered state deterministic
A timezone override controls browser behavior, not every source of time or variation in a visual test. Before capturing, control the page state that the screenshot is meant to represent:

- Pin runner-side timezone when needed. Playwright says its locale and timezone settings affect the browser, not the test runner. If Node-side test code relies on local timezone behavior, configure the process environment separately with
TZ. - Control server-dependent data. Browser emulation does not set a server, database, or remote API timezone. Use deterministic test data or configure those systems independently when their responses affect the rendered page.
- Wait for the intended content. Navigate to the specific route and state, then wait for relevant content and assets, including fonts and lazy-loaded images. A developer report describes both dates differing across local and server runs and lazy-loaded image capture issues; those are examples, not guarantees about every site (Duncan Mackenzie’s report).
- Keep the rendering environment consistent. Host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can change rendering. Generate and compare baselines in the same environment where possible, as Playwright recommends.
- Inspect diffs before updating. Compare expected and actual images, then check browser, OS, timezone, locale, viewport, and page state. A mismatch may be a genuine design change or an environmental difference.
Choose a framework that fits your existing tests
Playwright is convenient if you want timezone configuration and a built-in screenshot assertion in the same test workflow. The alternatives below document timezone and capture controls, but the cited API references do not establish an equivalent built-in visual assertion workflow for Puppeteer or Selenium BiDi.

Framework APIs vary by language and version. Check the API binding you have installed before copying an example; Selenium’s cited method is specifically its Python BiDi API.
Troubleshoot timezone screenshot mismatches
- The browser shows the expected time, but test logic does not: browser emulation and runner timezone are separate. Configure the runner’s
TZenvironment when Node-side date logic needs it. - The time is right but its formatting is wrong: set
localeseparately fromtimezoneId, then regenerate and review the baseline if the expected presentation changed. - The date changes between local and CI runs: check runner and backend behavior as well as the browser context. Make test data and the rendering environment consistent.
- Images or fonts are missing: ensure the page has reached the intended loaded state before capturing, and account for lazy-loaded content rather than taking the screenshot immediately after navigation.
- Many unrelated pixels differ: compare OS, browser version, headless mode, viewport, locale, timezone, and page state with the baseline environment before changing tolerances or approving a new snapshot.
- A timezone identifier is rejected: verify the identifier and support in the installed framework/browser version. Use a location-style identifier appropriate to the scenario, and consult the framework’s API documentation.

No. Configure server-side behavior or test data separately when backend time affects the page.

Can I use a fixed UTC offset instead of a named timezone?
Some framework APIs accept offsets, but a named location is generally the better fit for a place-based scenario that may cross daylight-saving changes. Check the API documentation for your framework.
